We have developed model predictions for the morphological distribution of cluster galaxies as a function of the cluster-centric distance and the local galaxy density, using a semi-analytical code. This code allows us to obtain magnitudes and colours for cluster galaxies at different redshifts, and thus to study in detail the evolution of the colour–magnitude relation of specific distant clusters. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Kimberlite pipes from Chidliak, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada host surface-derived Paleozoic carbonate xenoliths containing conodonts. Conodonts are phosphatic marine microfossils that experience progressive, cumulative and irreversible colour changes upon heating that are experimentally calibrated as a conodont colour alteration index (CAI). CAI values permit us to estimate the temperatures to which conodont-bearing rocks have been heated. Conodonts have been recovered from 118 samples from 89 carbonate xenoliths collected from 12 of the pipes and CAI values within individual carbonate xenoliths show four types of CAI distributions: (1) CAI values that are uniform throughout the xenolith; (2) lower CAIs in core of a xenolith than the rim; (3) CAIs that increase from one side of the xenolith to the other; and, (4) in one xenolith, higher CAIs in the xenolith core than at the rim. We have used thermal models for post-emplacement conductive cooling of kimberlite pipes and synchronous heating of conodont-bearing xenoliths to establish the temperature–time history of individual xenoliths within the kimberlite bodies. Model results suggest that the time-spans for xenoliths to reach the peak temperatures recorded by CAIs varies from hours for the smallest xenoliths to 2 or 3 years for the largest xenoliths. The thermal modelling shows the first three CAI patterns to be consistent with in situ conductive heating of the xenoliths coupled to the cooling host kimberlite. The fourth pattern remains an anomaly.

Fisheries managers are increasingly promoting catch-and-release (C&R) to manage recreationally angled fish stocks. Despite this, there is a scarcity of information on the effects of C&R on estuarine-dependent species. Cape stumpnose Rhabdosargus holubi dominates the recreational fisheries catch and provides an important source of food for subsistence fishers in some temperate South African estuaries. The health and survival of R. holubi exposed to a C&R event was investigated by examining their physiological stress response (blood glucose and lactate), reflex impairment (reflex action mortality predictors [RAMP]) and short-term (12-hour) survival. Fish were captured and exposed to one of three air-exposure treatments: 0 s, 30 s or 90 s. Stress and health were measured either immediately (immediate) or one hour after (delayed) the C&R event. There was no significant difference in blood glucose between air-exposure treatments, but there was a significant difference between the mean immediate and delayed glucose levels within each treatment (F(2,143) = 81.8, p < 0.01). In contrast, blood lactate level was significantly higher in the 90-s treatment (p < 0.05). Immediate blood lactate levels were significantly lower than the delayed samples for each treatment (F = 4.29, p = 0.02; n = 169). Although all fish exhibited at least one reflex impairment, the RAMP score was significantly higher in the 90-s air-exposure treatment (H(2,86) = 9.73, p = 0.007). Also, RAMP scores were significantly lower in the delayed samples (p < 0.01). Although short-term mortality was relatively low (2.3%) for this species, it was highest in the 90-s treatment (7%). These results suggest that physiological stress is higher when R. holubi are exposed to longer periods of air exposure and that the physiological stress of fish subject to a C&R event is best measured after a delay.  相似文献

A broad diversity of microorganisms and larval aquatic animals swim along a helical trajectory. Helical movement toward or away from stimuli involves the detection of gradients, alteration of the helical trajectory, and gradient tracking. Using sensory and neural circuitry models from swimming simulations of tadpole-like ascidian larvae (Phylum Chordata, Subphylum Urochordata), we built and tested a single-sensor, surface-swimming, tail-flapping robot that swims up a light gradient and holds station at an orbital around an area of high intensity. We implemented the same neural circuitry in a terrestrial, wheeled robot with a single photoresistor; it exhibited similar navigational behavior. We also mathematically modeled single-sensor robots navigating in plane. The simulated robots showed the importance of sensor placement and excitation field on navigational behavior. When the sensor placement and excitation field of the simulated robot matched that of the embodied robots, navigational behavior was similar. These results 1) tested and supported a proposed neural circuitry model, 2) showed the simplicity and effectiveness of using a single light sensor for navigation, and 3) demonstrated the use of helical motion in two dimensions.  相似文献

Great Victoria Desert: Development and sand provenance   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sands of the Great Victoria Desert, south‐central Australia, can be divided into three main groups on the basis of their physical and chemical characteristics (colour, grainsize parameters, mineralogy of heavy‐mineral suites, quartz oxygen isotopic composition, zircon U–Pb ages). The groups occupy the western, central and eastern Great Victoria Desert respectively, boundaries between them corresponding approximately to changes in the underlying rocks associated with the Yilgarn Craton to Officer Basin to Arckaringa Basin. Several lines of evidence suggest derivation of the sands mainly from local bedrock with very little subsequent aeolian transport. Ultimate protosources for the sands, each in order of importance, are: western Great Victoria Desert—Yilgarn Craton, Albany‐Fraser Orogen, Musgrave Complex; central Great Victoria Desert—Musgrave Complex; eastern Great Victoria Desert—Gawler and Curnamona Blocks, Adelaide Geosyncline, Musgrave Complex. Sediment from the Adelaide Geosyncline includes in addition an ‘exotic’ component from Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks probably derived mainly from Antarctica. Sediment transport of several hundred kilometres from these protosources to the sedimentary basins was dominantly by fluvial, not aeolian, means. Post‐Tertiary aeolian transport or reworking has been minimal, serving only to shape sand eroded from underlying sedimentary rocks or residual products of local basement weathering into the current dunes.  相似文献

The hottentot seabream Pachymetopon blochii is a small-sized (maximum 2.67 kg) sparid endemic to southern Africa. It is an important target in South Africa's Western Cape traditional linefishery, particularly in the absence of more valuable pelagic species (such as Thyrsites atun and Seriola lalandi). In 2000, South Africa's linefishery was declared to be in a state of emergency, and commercial fishing effort was consequently reduced by 70%. A subsequent increase in stock biomass and intraspecific competition, coupled with environmental changes, were hypothesised to have thereafter altered the growth rate of hottentot, from 2000 to 2010. This study aimed to revise outdated age–growth models for the hottentot by using modern techniques (sectioned otoliths), and to compare age–growth relationships before and after the declared linefish state of emergency. The maximum age observed was 19 years, with no difference in the growth rate between sexes (p = 0.39–0.43) or time-periods (p = 0.96). Although the growth rate did not change, there is evidence that the age structure of the stock changed between time-periods as a result of changes in fishing pressure between 2000 and 2010. The enhanced recent growth model for hottentot, described as Lt = 418.063 (1 – e?0.104(t – [?4.709])) (pooled sexes; n = 206), indicates a considerably slower growth rate for this species than was proposed previously using whole otoliths and has major implications for effective stock management.  相似文献

Exploration for diamond-bearing kimberlites in the Chidliak project area by Peregrine Diamonds has generated a grid-like till sampling pattern across four discrete areas of interest totalling 402 km2 that is densely populated with research-grade compositional data for 10,743 mantle-derived Cr-pyrope garnets. The available dataset is well suited to statistical analysis, in part due to the relatively unbiased spatial coverage. Previous workers showed empirically that the TiO2 and Mn thermometry (Ti-TMn) attributes of Cr-pyrope populations at the Chidliak project may serve as source-specific “fingerprints”. In this work, we employ a simplified version of the multivariate Mahalanobis distance technique to formally examine the variability of, and differences between, Ti-TMn attributes of Cr-pyrope subpopulations recovered from a Laurentide-age glaciated terrain that also contains 30 known kimberlites within the four areas of interest. We show the simplified Mahalanobis distance approach enables accurate discrimination of Cr-pyrope subpopulations with subtly to distinctly different Ti-TMn attributes, and permits proper demarcation of their respective kimberlite source(s), specifically in areas with straightforward glacial histories. Redistribution and blending of Cr-pyrope subpopulations from known kimberlite sources is also observed, and typifies areas at Chidliak with complex late-glacial histories. Our results support <1 km horizontal scale subtle to obvious variability in the proportions of TiO2-rich and high-temperature (> 1100 °C) Cr-pyropes between closely spaced kimberlite source(s) and also between physically adjacent magma batches within single kimberlite pipes. The local scale variability is attributed to protokimberlite fluid or melt interacting with, and metasomatizing discrete conduits within, the ambient diamond-facies peridotitic mantle at times closely preceding eruption of kimberlite magma batches at Chidliak.

Sinelobus stanfordi is a tanaidacean of worldwide distribution of considerable significance within coastal ecosystems. The aim of this research was to provide essential information on the poorly-known population biology of this species. Benthic samples were taken seasonally from winter 2005 through summer 2007 along 155?km of shoreline within the Río de la Plata Estuary, Argentina. The density of this tanaidacean was higher in vegetated than in bare sediments. The smaller individuals flourished in spring and summer, whereas the larger mature members prevailed in the cooler seasons. Females were always twice as abundant as males. Copulatory females, with 18?±?8 eggs each, were collected during all the seasons. Five cohorts were distinguished by the von Bertalanffy growth function. This research represents a baseline investigation for future studies on the population dynamics of S. stanfordi both in this estuary and in other places where this species is found.  相似文献

This paper briefly presents a numerical code which simulates the evolution of galaxies belonging to rich clusters. The evolutionary model considers both, cluster dynamics and galaxy photometry, taking into account the galaxy-cluster interactions (collisional stripping, merging and ram-pressure stripping by the ICM) and the intrinsic galaxy evolution. We use different initial mass distributions for galaxies and we briefly discuss the influence of the initial segregation in mass on the evolution of the photometrical properties.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献
