The Ross of Mull pluton consists of granites and granodioritesand intrudes sediments previously metamorphosed at amphibolitefacies. The high grade and coarse grain size of the protolithis responsible for a high degree of disequilibrium in many partsof the aureole and for some unusual textures. A band of metapelitecontained coarse garnet, biotite and kyanite prior to intrusion, and developed a sequence of textures towards the pluton. InZone I, garnet is rimmed by cordierite and new biotite. In ZoneII, coarse kyanite grains are partly replaced by andalusite, indicating incomplete reaction. Coronas of cordierite + muscovitearound kyanite are due to reaction with biotite. In the higher-gradeparts of this zone there is complete replacement of kyaniteand/or andalusite by muscovite and cordierite. Cordierite chemistryindicates that in Zone II the stable AFM assemblage (not attained)would have been cordierite + biotite + muscovite, without andalusite. The observed andalusite is therefore metastable. Garnet is unstablein Zone II, with regional garnets breaking down to cordierite, new biotite and plagioclase. In Zone III this breakdown is welladvanced, and this zone marks the appearance of fibrolite andK-feldspar in the groundmass as a result of muscovite breakdown.Zone IV shows garnet with cordierite, biotite, sillimanite,K-feldspar and quartz. Some garnets are armoured by cordieriteand are inferred to be relics. Others are euhedral with Mn-richcores. For these, the reaction biotite + sillimanite + quartz garnet + cordierite + K-feldspar + melt is inferred. Usinga petrogenetic grid based on the work of Pattison and Harte, pressure is estimated at 3·2 kbar, and temperature atthe Zone II–III boundary at 650°C and in Zone IV asat least 750°C. Chemical zoning, recorded by grain growth during metamorphism, is a key source of information about P–T–t paths. Interpretation of these data must be carried out using appropriate models and recognizing their inherent assumptions. To assist with defining how zoned minerals form, a set of geometric criteria for three types of chemical zoning developed in minerals (diffusion, growth and grain recycling) is outlined. Re‐equilibration of minerals by lattice diffusion causes zoning if the re‐equilibration is incomplete. Growth of porphyroblasts is commonly considered in pelites, but in metagranitoids, large monophase domains undergo coarsening by recycling of material from one grain to another as grain boundaries migrate driven by surface energy. This type of grain size increase is termed here ‘grain recycling’. Zoning developed during grain recycling due to equilibration of the recycled material with grain‐boundary chemistry is termed ‘grain‐recycling zoning’. Furthermore, short lattice diffusion lengths relative to grain sizes cause metamorphic fractionation because material in the grain cores is not in communication thermodynamically with the rest of the rock. A new model is derived for this sort of grain size increase coupled with metamorphic reactions using Theriak–Domino. An example is given of plagioclase undergoing an increase in anorthite content as epidote breaks down during amphibolite facies metamorphism of a metagranitoid. Agreement between naturally occurring zoning profiles and those derived from modelled P–T–t paths shows that this model can be used to extract metamorphic conditions from rocks which are not accessible using conventional thermobarometry.  相似文献

Two samples from the Eclogite Micaschist Complex (EMC) and the Seconda Zona Diorito–Kinzigitica (IIDK) of the Sesia Zone have been studied using a high-spatial resolution laser probe 40Ar/39Ar technique with the aim of investigating the complexities of argon behaviour in metamorphic rocks and comparing their thermal histories. Data from a single large phengite grain from the EMC show a range of ages from mid-Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous. These ‘apparent age’ variations are spatially related to both location within the grain and to intragrain microstructure. Modelling of the data shows that the profile formed by the diffusion of an excess argon component into the grain, parallel to the mica cleavage. Profile asymmetry is explained by temporal variations in microstructural development enabling excess argon to enter the grain at different times in different places. The temperatures of the initiation of deformation and the possible time-scales for the deformation can be calculated as a function of cooling rate. All estimates suggest deformation at greenschist facies, in accord with the observed retrograde mineral assemblage. Absolute temperature estimates for deformation vary by less than 22 °C for different cooling rates of 10 and 30 °C Ma?1 but vary by 80 °C with different estimates of diffusion parameters. The duration of deformation was for at least 2 Ma at 10 °C Ma?1 or 0.7 Ma at 30 °C Ma?1. Biotites from the IIDK sample record a Permian to Upper Cretaceous age range that correlates with grain size, the smallest grain sizes yielding the youngest ages. This relationship is best explained by a partial resetting of biotites during an Alpine thermal event initiated not more than 70 Ma ago. Modelling of these data suggest that the sample never exceeded 300 °C during the Alpine. The profoundly different thermal histories of the two units—the EMC recrystallized at 550 °C whilst the IIDK remained below 300 °C—suggests that they may not have been juxtaposed until much later than the eclogite facies metamorphism.  相似文献

The Darwin Mounds are small (up to 70 m in diameter), discrete cold‐water coral banks found at c. 950 m water depth in the northern Rockall Trough, north‐east Atlantic. Formerly described in terms of their genesis, the Darwin Mounds are re‐evaluated here in terms of mound growth processes based on 100 and 410 kHz side‐scan sonar data. The side‐scan sonar coverage is divided into a series of acoustic facies representing increasing current speed and sediment transport/erosion from south to north: pockmark facies, ‘mounds within depressions’ facies, Darwin Mound facies, stippled seabed facies and sand wave facies. Mound morphometric changes are quantified and show a south‐to‐north divergence from an inherited morphology, reflecting the outline of coral‐colonized fluid escape structures, to developed, downstream elongated, elevated mound forms. It is postulated that increasing current speeds and bedload sand transport favour mound growth and development by a process of enhanced sand sedimentation within mounds due to current deceleration by frictional drag around coral colonies. Comparisons are made with similar growth processes attributed to comparably sized cold‐water coral mounds in the Porcupine Seabight, offshore Ireland.  相似文献

High resolution swath bathymetry data reveal a previously glaciated submarine terrain 20 km offshore Anglesey, north Wales, UK. The detailed documentation of remarkably well-preserved subglacial and ice-marginal bedforms provides evidence for a grounded part of the Irish Sea Ice Stream in a phase of deglaciation. The observed ribbed moraines, drumlins, flutes and eskers indicate a converging ice flow to the west, which then turns south into the deeper central Irish Sea Basin. Using the relative position of the bedforms, their spatial distribution and the morphological resemblance with bedforms described in the literature, this subglacial terrain is interpreted as representing a transition zone of frozen to thawed bed conditions during deglaciation, with an eastwards migrating thawing front that partly altered the edge of the surveyed ribbed moraine field by drumlinization. The abundant De Geer moraines and iceberg scour marks superimposed on drumlins and flutes reveal that the final retreat of the grounded ice margin in the surveyed area terminated into a water-mass with extensive iceberg calving. As the glacial terrain is well preserved, no significant burial has taken place, either by glacially or terrestrially derived sediment. The strong tidal currents at present keep the submarine terrain swept clean of contemporary sediment cover.  相似文献

Abstract– Pd and Ag partitioning between liquid Fe metallic sulfide and liquid silicate under plausible magma ocean conditions constrains potential core 107Ag content and the origin of observed Pd and Ag mantle abundances. DPdmetallic sulfide/silicate (element concentration in metallic liquid/concentration in silicate liquid) in our experiments is insensitive to S content and temperature, but increases with total Pd content. DPdmetallic sulfide/silicate at low Pd concentration ranges from approximately 150–650. Metallic sulfide Pd content and silicate Pd content anticorrelate in our study. A curved silicate saturation surface in the Fe sulfide–silicate Pd ternary can explain both the metallic sulfide–silicate Pd anticorrelation and interstudy differences in DPdmetallic sulfide/silicate behavior. The size and shape of the curved silicate phase volume may respond to physical and chemical conditions, reducing the general applicability of D calculations. Ag becomes decreasingly siderophile as S increases: DAgmetallic sulfide/silicate decreases from 144 at 0 wt% S to 2.5 at 28 wt% S added to the starting metal sulfide liquid. Model calculations indicate that 1% core material incorporated into the Hawai’ian plume would yield a 107Ag signature on the surface smaller than detectable by current analytical techniques. Observed Pd and Ag mantle depletions relative to bulk Earth are consistent with depletions calculated with the data from this study for a magma ocean scenario without additional accretionary input after core formation.  相似文献
