Palynological evidence for Lower Ordovician rocks (Tremadoc and Àrenig) in the Northern Greywacke Zone (Eastern Alps)

Until recently, only fossils of Caradoc to Carboniferous age have been reported from the Northern Greywacke Zone/Eastern Alps. New medium-preserved and diversified acritarch assemblages from the Lower Wildschönau Formation indicate a Lower Ordovician (Tremadoc and Arenig) age. These fossil spectra define a well-constrained time interval for a lower section of the Northern Greywacke Zone for the first time.     

Spectral investigation of the chromosphere

Several hundred H spectrograms from areas close to the solar limb were taken with the 35 cm Coudé refractor at Anacapri. The 41 spectra with the greatest spatial resolution were selected and analysed. At the supergranular boundaries a considerable fraction of the line profiles were found to correspond to Beckers Cloud Model (BCM). Moreover, the BCM parameters of the dark mottles at the limb appear to be approximately equal to those from the center of the disk. On the other hand, we also obtained evidence in disagreement with the general applicability of the BCM to all features of the chromospheric fine structure.We attempted to present the large set of observational data in a fashion that permits their interpretation by alternative theoretical models.Mitteilungen aus dem Fraunhofer Institut Nr. 151.     

Influences of wastewater discharges on the water quality of Mamasın dam watershed in Aksaray, Central Anatolian part of Turkey

Sustaining the human ecological benefits of surface water requires carefully planned strategies for reducing the cumulative risks posed by diverse human activities. Municipal governments in Aksaray City play a key role in developing solutions to surface water management and protection problems. The responsibility to provide drinking water and sewage works, regulate the use of private land, and protect public health provides the mandate and authority to take action. A large part of Aksaray City uses Mamasın dam water as its primary source for drinking water. Several point sources of contamination may result from direct wastewater discharges from Melendiz and Karasu rivers, which recharge the Mamasın dam watershed. Relevant studies were carried out for monitoring the eutrophication process, which usually occurs in the static water mass of the Mamasın dam lake. This process may be caused by the continual increase in nutrients and decrease of O₂ levels, causing anaerobic conditions. Stimulated algae growth in these water bodies consequently reduces water quality. Hydrochemical parameters were evaluated to estimate the types of pollution sources, the level of pollution, and its environmental impacts on the Mamasın dam drinking water reservoir.
