Abstract During the migration of the back arc extension from central to western Greece the Corinth and Patras grabens are being formed. Orthogonal opening of these graben zones is accomplished by WNW listric normal faults and NNE transfer faults which produce an along-axis fragmentation. The listric faults show an increase in the dip of the fault plane westwards as well as a decrease in the maximum extension rate from 50% to the east in the Corinth graben, to 10% to the west in the Patras graben. Similarly, towards the west, Plio-Quaternary deposits become thinner whereas Pliocene sediments thin-out indicating a westward rift propagation.
As the back arc extension migrates westwards it is interacting or is being superimposed above another orthogonal fault system consisting of NNW and ENE normal faults. These faults have been formed during general uplift behind the orogenic front which has been migrating from western Greece to the Ionian islands. The ENE-trending Rio graben which belongs to his orthogonal system connects the Patras graben to the Corinth graben and has subsequently been active as a transfer fault between them.
Plio-Quaternary geodynamic processes in central continental Greece are quite similar to those earlier processes observed in the central Aegean region which reflect the initial stage of continental break-up behind a migrating orogenic front.  相似文献

A new subtype of Gilbert-type fan deltas, ‘the trapezoidal fan delta’, characterized by the absence of bottomset deposits, is recognized in the south-western active margins of the Corinth rift in central Greece. They are formed adjacent to master extensional listric faults and developed by progradation either onto a subaqueous basin escarpment or across a subaerial platform where alluvial fans have accumulated. Simultaneously with master fault activity, displacements on counter faults along intrabasinal basement highs produced fan delta foreset deposits. Furthermore, footwall imbrication and uplift along the listric faults, as well as transfer fault displacement, have strongly influenced the pattern of fan delta sedimentation.  相似文献

The Mesohellenic Trough is a 130 km long and about 30 km wide subsiding area which contains a thick sequence of well exposed Late Cenozoic post-orogenic sediments. This intermontane basin, located at the contact between the Apulian and Pelagonian collided margins, provides a good example of the characteristics needed to study the chronology of late orogenic intracontinental structures. The Mesohellenic Trough was developed from the Middle Eocene to Middle Miocene as a piggy-back basin along the eastern flanks of a giant pop-up structure. This structure consists of west-verging, foreland-propagating thrusts within the Apulian plate and of east-verging backthrusts within the Pelagonian plate. As a result the eastern parts of the Apulian margin were thickened and uplifted, followed by post-orogenic collapse.Internal deformation of the sedimentary infill varies widely along the trough axis. At the northern and southern terminations of the trough, two small indentors induced a tectonic escape towards the central part of the basin until the Middle Miocene. During this process of convergent wrenching, reverse strike-slip faults and pure strike-slip faults formed. Towards the central part of the trough, convergent wrenching decreased gradually until it was replaced by a post-orogenic collapse with normal and oblique normal faults trending parallel and/or perpendicular to the trough axis.  相似文献

The Upper Pleistocene geoarchives in the south-eastern Carpathian Basin are represented predominantly by loess–palaeosol records. In 2015, a 10 m sediment core composed of clay-rich lacustrine sediments was recovered by vibracoring a dry lake basin located between the Vršac Mountains (Serbia) and the Banat Sands in the south-eastern Carpathian Basin; a location relevant for placing regional archaeological results in a palaeoenvironmental context. Here, we present results from geoelectrical prospection and a lithostratigraphic interpretation of this sequence supported by a detailed granulometric study supplemented by ostracod analysis. An age model based on luminescence dating is discussed against sedimentological proxy data and its implication for palaeoenvironmental change. The cores show a stratigraphy of lighter ochre-coloured and darker greyish sediment, related to the deposition of clay and silt trapped in an aquatic environment. Geophysical measurements show ~20 m thick lacustrine sediments. The grain-size distributions including the variability in fine clay are indicative of a lacustrine environment. Fine particles were brought into the depositional environments by aquatic input and settled from suspension; also, direct dust input is constrained by grain-size results. Riverine input and aeolian dust input interplayed at the locality.  相似文献

An exhumation model of the south Peloponnesus, Greece   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An exhumation model comprising forward and backward thrusting and late orogenic collapse is proposed in order to explain the kinematics of the tectonic windows in the south Peloponnesus. The model is based on mapping, mesoscopic structural data and strain analysis. Syn-compressional thickening took place throughout the Oligocene and Early Miocene which includes the subduction of the Pindos Ocean at the western margin of the Pelagonian microcontinent and the intracontinental subduction of the Phyllite–Quartzite and the Plattenkalk series. The latter subduction was associated with blueschist metamorphism, westward-directed ductile thrusting, and folding. The exhumation history of the deeper parts of the orogen began at the Oligocene–Miocene boundary with the progressive entrance of the low-density crust and the Plattenkalk carbonates in the subduction zone. Increased buoyancy caused: (a) the initiation of the Phyllite–Quartzite series extrusion; (b) vertical coaxial stretching; and (c) the evolution of two pop-up structures, i.e. the Parnon and Taygetos anticlines. This syn-compressional exhumation was taking place in the lower Miocene with decreasing rates from 7 to 1.5 mm/year. The change in the local stress field from compression to extension began in the middle Miocene with the formation of hinterland-dipping normal faults. The exhumation/denudation rate caused by the footwall uplift along these faults does not exceed 0.2 mm/year. Received: 16 April 1999 / Accepted: 19 January 2000  相似文献

Troitsky, Leonid, Punning, Jaan-Mati, HÜtt, Galina & Rajamäe, Raivo 1979 12 01: Pleistocene glaciation chronology of Spitsbergen. Boreas , Vol. 8, pp. 401–407. Oslo. ISSN 0300–9483.
Geomorphological and geochronological studies of Pleistocene deposits were carried out in sections along Billefjorden and Bellsund as well as on Bröggerhalvöya and Prins Karls Forland. For purposes of correlation and development of a time scale, radiocarbon (14C) and thermoluminescent (TL) dating methods were used. The dates obtained indicate the presence of older Pleistocene deposits on Spitsbergen and also provide information on the distribution of Middle Pleistocene glacial deposits. A correlation scheme of Pleistocene deposits of Spitsbergen with stratigraphic units of the Alps and northwestern Europe is presented.  相似文献

A cost effective method to discern brooding from non-brooding specimens of the Chilean flat oyster (Ostrea chilensis Phillipi, 1844) is needed to optimise current hatchery practices for this species. Accordingly, we investigated the efficacy of two treatments, AQUI-S® and MgCl2, in anaesthetising individuals of this species and then mapped any subsequent mortality of anaesthetised oysters. Oysters immersed for 3 h in solutions of 20, 40, 80 and 100 µL L?1 of AQUI-S® exhibited no signs of anaesthesia and also recorded low levels of mortality (i.e. 8% or less). Conversely, oysters immersed in 30, 40 and 50 g L?1 MgCl2 showed between 96%–100% anaesthesia after 3 h whereas only 70% of oysters immersed in 60 g L?1 MgCl2 were anaesthetised over this time period. Time taken for 50% of oyster shells to open (SO50) was compared among MgCl2 treatments with oysters immersed in 60 g L?1 taking significantly longer than (103 min) those immersed in 30–50 g L?1 (SO50 values of 43, 54 and 37 min respectively). Furthermore, treating oysters with MgCl2 resulted in low levels of mortality (i.e. 13% or less) and was not related to MgCl2 concentration. Thus, our results show that immersing O. chilensis in MgCl2 to be an efficient and cost effective method to access the brood chamber of this species. We recommend the use of 30 g L?1 for routine anaesthesia and recommend that future work investigates the efficacy of cheaper MgCl2 sources and what effects MgCl2 anaesthetisation has on developing larvae.  相似文献

Thermoluminescence (TL) dating of shallow marine sediments from the well studied interglacial-carly glacial sequence at Fjtfsangcr, western Norway has yielded ages that with few exceptions become progressively older with depth. For Ecmian samples the TL method yielded a mean of 111,000 ± 23,000 years, close to the often postulated age of 125,000 years. For the Early Weichselian the TL dates were younger than suggested by the amino-acid method.  相似文献

Normal faults within the Ptolemais coal field and large seismogenic faults in the northwestern Aegean remain fractal for displacement values larger than about 1m. The kinematic parameters on reverse drag profiles such as length of rollover, footwall uplift and wavelength of footwall uplift show that all three parameters have a power law relationship, expressed by a c exponent of about 1, with the maximum displacement which take place across the fault. Footwall uplift/hanging wall subsidence ratio is about 1/2.The displacement analysis help us to propose a growth model for larger seismogenic faults in the NW Aegean, as is the ‘Hepiros fault set’ and the ‘Aliakmon fault zone’. Faults within the ‘Aliakmon fault zone’ were independently developed, at the first stages of deformation, by tip line deformation and out-of plane bifurcation, whereas later, deformation continued by segment linkage. One of these faults the ‘Sarakina fault’ was reactivated during the 1995 earthquake to produce a 25 km long surface rupture. A long term slip rate of about 0.3 mm a−1 has been estimated by taking into consideration that over the past 6 Ma a maximum displacement of 1700 m across this fault has taken place.  相似文献

Air gun seismic and 3.5 kHz profiling data from the Gulf of Patras, western Greece, show that it is occupied by a small asymmetric graben with several geometric similarities to the larger-scale graben in the Gulf of Corinth to the east. Major listric faulting characterizes the southern flank of the graben whilst the northern flank represents an associated rollover structure affected by antithetic and synthetic faulting. The present phase of subsidence is of Holocene age, but buried growth faults suggest earlier subsidence in the Gulf. The average rate of subsidence through the Holocene is estimated to be 10 mm/year.The Gulf of Patras graben, together with the Gulf of Corinth graben and the Megara basin, represent a continuous system of WNW-ESE trending grabens in a broad zone of intense seismicity within the Aegean domain. Individual grabens are offset and are interconnected by NE-SW trending fault systems.  相似文献
