We present two spectra of the supernova SN1988A in M58 (NGC4579) over the wavelength range 4000–9700 Å, as recorded by the Faint Object Spectrograph on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos. We conclude that SN1988A was a type II supernova.  相似文献

We present the spectrum of the supernova SN1988e over the wavelength range 4750–9000 Å as recorded on 11 February, 1988. The spectrum was taken in one 2000 s exposure using the Faint Object Spectrograph on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos.We conclude that SN1988e was a type I supernova, and that at the time of observation it had faded 7.5 mag from its predicted magnitude at maximum light. Spectra taken at such late stages in the light curve are comparatively rare, and are made possible only with the application of modern instrumentation.  相似文献

Among long-lived radioactive parent-daughter element pairs, the ratio Lu/Hf is strongly fractionated relative to constant Sm/Nd in the Earth's sedimentary system. This is caused by high resistance to chemical weathering of the mineral zircon (Zr,Hf)SiO4. Zircon-bearing sandy sediments on and near continents have very low Lu/Hf, while deep-sea clays have up to three times the chondritic Lu/Hf ratio. Turbidity currents mechanically carry the low-Lu/Hf sandy material onto the ocean floor. The results are important for the crust-to-mantle recycling discussion, where most recycled materials would be subducted oceanic sediments. Such sediment should be capable of explaining the HfNd mantle isotopic variation by mixing with peridotite, but in fact any average pelagic sediment has Nd/Hf and Lu/Hf too high to allow mixing curves to pass through the Hf/Nd isotopic array. The array could only be reproduced by subduction of turbidite sandstone with pelagic sediment in the approximate ratio 1.2 to 1, and by maintaining a good mixture between the two components. At least today, turbidites are available for subduction only at locations quite different and distant from those where pelagic sediments may be recycled; furthermore, mantle isotopic variation shows that the mantle often cannot mix itself well enough to homogenize these widely-separated sedimentary components to the degree required. The Lu/Hf fractionations place a severe restriction on the ability of recycled sediments to explain mantle isotopic patterns.  相似文献

The 176Lu-176Hf isotope method and its applications in earth sciences are discussed. Greater fractionation of Lu/Hf than Sm/Nd in planetary magmatic processes makes 176Hf177Hf a powerful geochemical tracer. In general, proportional variations of 176Hf177Hf exceed those of 143Ndl44Nd by factors of 1.5–3 in terrestrial and lunar materials. Lu-Hf studies therefore have a major contribution to make in understanding of terrestrial and other planetary evolution through time, and this is the principal importance of Lu-Hf. New data on basalts from oceanic islands show unequivocally that whereas considerable divergences occur in 176Hf177Hf-87Sr86Sr and 143Ndl44Nd-87Sr86Sr diagrams, 176Hf177Hf and 143Nd144Nd display a single, linear isotopic variation in the suboceanic mantle. These discordant 87Sr86Sr relationships may allow, with the acquisition of further Hf-Nd-Sr isotopic data, a distinction between processes such as mantle metasomatism, influence of seawater-altered material in the magma source, or recycling of sediments into the mantle. In order to evaluate the Hf-Nd isotopic correlation in terms of mantle fractionation history, there is a need for measurements of Hf distribution coefficients between silicate minerals and liquids, and specifically for a knowledge of Hf behavior in relation to rareearth elements. For studying ancient terrestrial Hf isotopic variations, the best quality Hf isotope data are obtained from granitoid rocks or zircons. New data show that very U-Pb discordant zircons may have upwardly-biased 176Hf177Hf, but that at least concordant to slightly discordant zircons appear to be reliable carriers of initial 176Hf177Hf. Until the controls on addition of radiogenic Hf to zircon are understood, combined zircon-whole rock studies are recommended. Lu-Hf has been demonstrated as a viable tool for dating of ancient terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples, but because it offers little advantage over existing methods, is unlikely to find wide application in pure chronological studies.  相似文献

Late-crystallised interstitial alkali feldspars and a single epidote from selected Proterozoic dolerites in Sweden have higher initital 87Sr/86Sr ratios, (e.g., 0.709) than the early-crystallised minerals of the same rocks ( 0.704); anomalies in Rb and Sr concentrations are also noted. This radiogenically-enriched Sr must originate in the older host rocks of the intrusions. As the contaminated phases often occupy <1 % of the dolerite, only an aqueous fluid would have been capable of transporting the contamination through the 99% solid intrusions. Textural association of late feldspars with hydrous alteration products supports this interpretation. Feldspar structural data suggest that most dolerites have been affected by subsolidus aqueous fluids, causing extensive structural re-equilibration in interstitial K-feldspars, as well as occasional metasomatic effects. Anomalies in 87Sr developed only where the fluids interacted with host rocks.  相似文献

Rb-Sr mineral data are presented for the Sudbury and Mackenzie dolerites of Canada and for dolerites and lamprophyres from southwest Greenland. Five mineral isochrons or errorchrons, based chiefly upon feldspar separates, agree with twelve biotites from dolerites in defining best-fit ages between 1260 and 1190 m.y. Much older K-Ar and Rb-Sr mineral ages from country rocks demonstrate that the dolerite results are not due to regional heating, and basaltic magmatism in both regions between 1260 and 1190 m.y. is indicated (λ(87Rb) = 1.42 × 10−11 yr−1).

This activity can be correlated with extensive dolerite sills in Sweden and Finland, the subject of parallel studies, which yield six mineral isochrons or errorchrons, ten Rb-Sr biotite ages from dolerites, and determinations by other methods falling between 1290 and 1155 m.y., although the Rb-Sr biotite ages are all grouped in the 1250-1210 m.y. range.

Palaeomagnetic poles from the dolerites define tight clusters for each of Canada/Greenland and Fennoscandia. Superimposition of the two groups of poles leads to a non-unique reconstruction in which Fennoscandia may have adjoined Canada/Greenland at 1260-1190 m.y., but in an orientation quite different from that established for 1000-850 m.y. The necessary net rotation of Fennoscandia through 90° may have been achieved by splitting, separation and final reunion of the continents into a different relative disposition between 1190 and 1000 m.y. This favours the involvement of plate tectonic processes in the Grenville-Sveconorwegian orogeny. The 1260-1190 m.y. dolerites may represent the beginning of a continental separation which preceded the Grenville orogeny, although other causes for the magmatism cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Rb-Sr mineral ages and palaeomagnetic data are presented for nine dolerite dykes and sills in central and southern Sweden. The intrusions are representative of widespread dolerites, mainly dykes, which cut pre-Sveconorwegian (Svecofennian) crust and trend parallel to the Sveconorwegian Front Zone (or Schistosity Zone) over a band up to 150 km wide along most of its 700-km length. The Rb-Sr ages suggest emplacement through the approximate interval 1000?900 m.y. Cooling ages on country rocks show little evidence of significant Sveconorwegian (e.g. 1000 m.y.) heating effects, and the new isotopic and palaeomagnetic results are taken to represent the time of dolerite intrusion.The dolerites were emplaced in response to net tensional stresses in the Svecofennian crust: it is proposed that these were caused by marginal upwarping related to post-orogenic uplift of the adjacent Sveconorwegian region.The palaeomagnetic poles for the dolerites are similar to poles from the Sveconorwegian Province and the Front Zone, indicating that these also have a ca. 1000?900-m.y. age. The similar cooling histories of the Sveconorwegian Province and the Grenville Province of Canada allow this age to be assigned also to the Grenville poles. If so, it is not necessary to postulate plate motions during Grenville-Sveconorwegian magnetisation, and the agreement between dolerite poles and Sveconorwegian poles suggests that the orogenic belt cooled essentially in place against its bounding cratons. A possible continental fit shows Scandinavia and North America contiguous in late Grenville time, though relative motions before 1000 m.y. are not ruled out.  相似文献

The effect of kelp Ecklonia maxima inclusion in formulated feeds on abalone growth and gut bacterial communities has not been previously investigated in South Africa. An eight-month on-farm growth trial was conducted with sub-adult Haliotis midae (~43 mm shell length) fed graded levels of kelp in formulated feeds. Kelp inclusion (0.44–3.54% of pellet dry mass) promoted faster growth (65.7–74.5% total mass gain), with better feed and protein conversions (apparent feed conversion ratio [FCR] 1.4–1.8, apparent protein efficiency ratio [PER] 2.3–2.7), as compared with the non-supplemented feed (52.3% total mass gain, FCR 2.1, PER 1.9; p < 0.001). Abalone-gut bacterial DNA was sequenced using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing and the sequences were clustered into operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at a 97% similarity level. A supplementary 16S rRNA gene denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis was employed. The dominant OTUs differed in terms of their relative abundances, with an autochthonous Mycoplasma strain being significantly more abundant (p = 0.03) in the gut of abalone fed a kelp-supplemented feed. The DGGE band patterns displayed higher within-group variability for abalone fed the control diet, suggesting that dietary kelp inclusion promotes gut-bacteria homeostasis. This may contribute to better feed utilisation and growth in abalone fed kelp-supplemented feeds.  相似文献

Age verification of rubyfish (Plagiogeneion rubiginosum) was sought using the bomb radiocarbon chronometer procedure. Stable isotopes were investigated for life history characteristics. Radiocarbon (14C) and stable isotope (δ18O and δ13C) levels were measured in micro-samples from five otoliths that had been aged using a zone count method. All the core 14C measurements were ‘pre-bomb’ indicating ages of at least 45 years, and the 14C measurements across the otolith sections suggested that the zone-count ageing method described herein is not biased. Maximum estimated age was 100 years. There was no significant between-sex difference in the von Bertalanffy growth curves. The δ18O values indicated that rubyfish are near-surface as juveniles, and move deeper with age. Adults appear to reside in 600–1000 m; this is deeper than most trawl-capture data suggest, but not implausible, and has stock assessment implications. The δ13C values reflect fish metabolic rates, trophic feeding levels and oceanographic conditions. The stable isotopes record the environmental life history of each fish, and have value in distinguishing stocks and/or indicating vertical and latitudinal migratory patterns.  相似文献
