The teeth, or elements, ofconodonts are among the most important Palaeozoic microfossils. Despite this, the biological relationships of conodonts have long remained enigmatic. Recent evidence of their soft anatomy, and of the ultrastructure of the elements, has finally revealed that they are vertebrates. These discoveries push vertebrate origins firmly back into the Cambrian and add a large cohort of specialists to the ranks of the vertebrate palaeontologists.  相似文献

The record of Quaternary glaciations of coastal areas is frequently preserved as a raised deglacial-emergence sequence. Detailed radiocarbon dating of foraminifera and marine macrofossils from a representative deglacial sequence on west Spitsbergen document two periods of sedimentation at c . 11,400 BP and at 9500 BP that together span < 500 years. The incompleteness of this record (< 25%), the highly episodic nature of sedimentation, the dominance of local glacial and environmental effects and the presence of allochthonous foraminifera inhibits ascertaining the relation between deglaciation of Svalbard/Barents Sea and changes in thermohaline circulation in the Norwegian Sea. The Late Weichselian and older deglacial sequences on west Spitsbergen have a similar sedimentologic succession. Thus, one possibility is that older raised-marine deglacial sequences on Svalbard and other Arctic areas may represent similar brief intervals, potentially confounding correlations across the Arctic and with well established events (i.e. the Eemian Interglacial) at lower latitudes.  相似文献

Lagerstatte是指保存丰富或精美化石、因而具有特殊研究价值的化石层.这类地层所含的化石常具有经矿化的生物软体甚至未变实体,从而为古生物的分类学、组织学、形态学、解剖学、生态学、埋藏学等研究提供了极其难得的材料.近年来发现于美国艾奥瓦州的文尼希克化石层,以其特异保存的多门类不常见化石分子为特征,成为目前仅知的中奥陶世Lagerstatte.这一生物群的发现不仅填补了化石记录中的一些空白,也为中奥陶世的生物辐射事件研究领域打开了一个在赤道附近非正常海洋环境中生存的生物群面貌窗口.而且,其中所含的不同类别矿化生物残留,在有机物的分解、置换以及生物成岩作用等研究中具有重要意义.初步研究表明,文尼希克生物群的生活环境与化石保存,可能与陨石撞击事件有关,从而为奥陶纪生物辐射事件的起因町能与太空星体爆裂有关的理论研究,提供了新的验证材料.  相似文献

Kyanite replaces andalusite in a belt of Ordovician and Silurian pelitic rocks that form a narrow synform pinched between high-grade antiforms in NW Variscan Iberia. Kyanite occurs across the belt in Al-rich, black pelites in assemblages I: kyanite–chloritoid–chlorite–muscovite and II: kyanite–staurolite– chlorite–muscovite. In I, kyanite occurs in the matrix and in kyanite–muscovite aggregates that pseudomorph earlier andalusite porphyroblasts. The aggregates are found across the belt and can still be recognized in assemblage II and even in III: andalusite–staurolite–biotite–muscovite, this latter being a hornfelsic Silurian schist where kyanite is relic and staurolite occurs in the matrix, and is resorbed inside new massive pleochroic andalusite. KFMASH and MnKFMASH pseudosections have been constructed using Thermocalc for Al-rich and Al-poorer compositions from the belt. Chloritoid zoning in Al-rich rocks containing assemblage I, plus chloritoid–chlorite thermometry complemented with garnet–chlorite thermometry in Al-poorer lithologies, mean that the path is one of increasing pressure and temperature. Conditions prior to assemblage I, with earlier andalusite stable, are those of the andalusite–chloritoid– chlorite field as testified by chloritoid enclosed in andalusite porphyroblast rims. The passage from assemblage I to II implies a prograde path within the kyanite field. Assemblage III represents peak conditions, indicating a prograde staurolite-consuming reaction across a KFMASH field, leading eventually to a locally found andalusite–biotite–muscovite hornfels. The lowest pressure stages are recorded by cordierite–biotite in Al-poor pelites. Garnet-bearing MnKFMASH assemblages in Al-poorer pelites record conditions similar to assemblages II and III. The replacement of andalusite by kyanite in assemblage I is attributed to downdragging of andalusite-bearing rocks into a synform as testified by the strained andalusite porphyroblasts affected by a subvertical crenulation cleavage. Prograde metamorphism in the eastern contact of the belt is due to heat transferred to the belt from the ascending high grade antiform across the Vivero fault.  相似文献

The South Auckland Volcanic Field is a Pleistocene (1·59–0·51Ma) basaltic intraplate, monogenetic field situated south ofAuckland City, North Island, New Zealand. Two groups of basaltsare distinguished based on mineralogy and geochemical compositions,but no temporal or spatial patterns exist in the distributionof various lava types forming each group within the field: GroupA basalts are silica-undersaturated transitional to quartz-tholeiiticbasalts with relatively low total alkalis (3·0–4·6wt %), Nb (7–29 ppm), and (La/Yb)N (3·4–7·6);Group B basalts are strongly silica-undersaturated basanitesto nepheline-hawaiites with high total alkalis (3·3–7·9wt %), Nb (32–102 ppm), and (La/Yb)N (12–47). GroupA has slightly higher 87Sr/86Sr, similar Nd, and lower 206Pb/204Pbvalues compared with Group B. Contrasting geochemical trendsand incompatible element ratios (e.g. K/Nb, Zr/Nb, Ce/Pb) areconsistent with separate evolution of Groups A and B from dissimilarparental magmas derived from distinct sub-continental lithosphericmantle sources. Differentiation within each group was controlledby olivine and clinopyroxene fractionation. Group B magmas weregenerated by <8% melting of an ocean island basalt (OIB)-likegarnet peridotite source with high 238U/204Pb mantle (HIMU)and enriched mantle (EMII) characteristics possibly inheritedfrom recycled oceanic crust. Group A magmas were generated by<12% melting of a spinel peridotite source also with HIMUand EMII signatures. This source type may have resulted fromsubduction-related metasomatism of the sub-continental lithospheremodified by a HIMU plume. These events were associated withMesozoic or earlier subduction- and plume-related magmatismwhen New Zealand was at the eastern margin of the Gondwana supercontinent. Seabirds of high latitudes in the North and South Atlantic (chiefly penguins, Procellariformes, alcids, shags, Gannet and Kittiwake) are compared (on absolute and energy-, mass- and time-specific scaled bases) in terms of the rate at which they supply energy to their offspring, the rate of offspring growth, and the duration of the dependence (fledging) period. For a smaller suite of species, time and energy budgets during complete foraging cycles (including time ashore) and while at sea are compared. The broad-scale comparisons show storm petrels to have consistently low provisioning and growth rates, and Kittiwakes, Gannets, shags and some penguins to have consistently high rates. Penguins (except the Gentoo Penguin) and albatrosses spend most of a foraging cycle at sea; murres, shags, gannet and kittiwake spend at least half the time ashore, guarding their offspring. Energy budgets are much more similar, because of the disproportionate cost of at-sea activities, although the time spent flying, swimming, resting, and diving varies widely between species and is often difficult to interpret in terms of active foraging. Other apparent anomalies include the large amount of time Common Murres spend resting at sea and the high resting and low flight metabolic rates of kittiwakes and gannets. Assessments of foraging performance need to be more broadly based than hitherto and to take account of both physical constraints and ecological contexts. Further development of these approaches, especially critical interspecies comparisons, requires better discrimination of activities at sea, measurement of activity-specific energy costs and more accurate data on provisioning rates to offspring, particularly of North Atlantic species, notably Gannets and shags.  相似文献

Beecher's Trilobite Bed in the Upper Ordovician of New York State has yielded some of the most completely preserved trilobites. Abundant specimens of Triarthrus, and fewer of Cryptolithus, were buried in a single catastrophic influx of sediment, and the limbs and other features are preserved in pyrite. A recent re-excavation of the bed provided an opportunity to investigate the controls on the pyritization of soft tissues, an extremely rare phenomenon. Larval and juvenile specimens are common in the Trilobite Bed, allowing the life histories of the trilobites to be pieced together. The nature of the transition from larva to adult was significant in determining the trilobites' chances of surviving the mass extinction at the end of the Ordovician.  相似文献

A convergent margin magma series with characteristic low Nband Ta abundances and enrichments in alkalis and alkaline earthsis intercalated with typical intraplate alkalic basalts in aback-arc setting, 200–250 km above the Wadati-Benioffzone on the North Island, New Zealand. These two contrastingmagma types, together with late-stage K-rich maflc lavas, wereerupted over a short time period (1{dot}60–2{dot}74 Ma)and constitute the Alexandra Volcanics. Field relationshipsindicate that these diverse magma types were contemporaneous,and thus their mantle source regions coexisted, in a singletectonic environment. The convergent margin magma series forms a linear chain of stratovolcanoesaligned at right angles to the present subduction zone. Closed-systempolybaric fractional crystallization models can explain theevolution from ankaramites to transitional olivine basalts toolivine tholeiites to high-Al basalts to medium- and high-Kandesites. The most primitive lavas have geochemical (high LIL/LREEand LIL/HFS element ratios) and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic compositionstypical of convergent margin magmas. Calculated source compositionssuggest that three components are involved: a MORB component,a component derived from subducted oceanic crust, and a contributionfrom subducted sediments. The alkalic basalts occur as dispersed monogenetic volcanoesand are intercalated with the larger convergent margin stratovolcanocs.These basalts are enriched in LILE, LREE, Nb, and Ta, and havelow Ba/Nb and Ba/La ratios, all of which are characteristicof ocean island (intraplate) basalts (OIBs). Their relativelyhigh Nd (+5{dot}5 and low 87Sr/86Sr(0{dot}703l–0{dot}7036)are also typical of OIBs. These alkalic magmas were derivedfrom the underlying continental lithospheric mantle that hasbeen enriched by upward-migrating silica-undersaturated melts,probably including volatiles, from the low- velocity zone. Asubducted slab component is not required to account for theirincompatible element enriched character. The K-rich mafic lavas, basanites, and absarokites are volumetricallyminor and cap the largest of the stratovolcanoes, Pirongia.The basanites have geochemical and isotopic compositions whichsuggest they are mixtures of multiple source components, includingthe alkalic and convergent margin region.  相似文献

The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has recently released three soil standard reference materials that are uncontaminated (SRM 2709), moderately contaminated (SRM 2711), and highly contaminated (SRM 2710) with metals. The SRMs were analyzed at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for thirty two major, minor and trace elements using a combination of wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (WDXRF) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Good agreement is observed between NIST certified values and USGS results. The wide concentration ranges for most transition metals should make these SRMs useful in assessing the accuracy of methods used in geochemical exploration and environmental studies.  相似文献
