Sound velocity,density, and related properties along a transect across the Bay of Bengal 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Physical properties, sound velocity and density of 95 core samples from ten locations along a transect (parallel to 15°N latitude)
across the Bay of Bengal were measured. Results indicate that sound velocities range from 1,482 to 1,679 m/s (av: 1,583 m/s)
and densities from 1,338 to 1,757 kg/m3 (av: 1,527 kg/m3). It has been observed that dark colored clays and sandy clays show higher values of sound velocity and density than the
average values. A comparative study of the same with that of the sediment cores collected from the Norwegian basin, Mediterranean
Sea, and Hatteras, Nares Abyssal plains, western North Atlantic Ocean was done. 相似文献

The northern parts of the Prathap and Laccadive Ridge system, eastern Arabian Sea, consist of three parallel basement ridge peaks at varied depths. The topographic highs are associated with either well-developed or subdued magnetic signatures. Model studies, constrained by seismic results, determine the varied nature and depth to the top of the causative basement bodies. Similarities of the geophysical signatures of the ridges and their structural resemblance perhaps point to their common origin. Hence we propose that the Prathap Ridge complex may be a part of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge system and formed because of the Reunion hotspot activity. 相似文献

Satellite imagery and offshore magnetic data were analysed to correlate regional tectonic elements on the inner continental
shelf off Konkan and the adjacent Deccan plateau. Three statistically important lineament trends—N-S, WNW-ESE and ENE-WSW—that
prevail on land are correlatable well with the offshore trends. This positive correlation suggests simultaneous deformation.
The major magnetic lineament observed off Jaigad Bay, west coast of India, may be the extension of onshore lineaments. The
correlation of both the offshore and onshore trends indicates that the fracture pattern of the crystalline basement has also

An earthquake of Mw 5.1 occurred on March 14, 2005, in the seismically active Koyna–Warna region in western India, the site known for the largest reservoir triggered seismicity (RTS) in the world. For more than four decades, earthquakes with M 4.0 have occurred in this region at regular intervals. Impoundment of reservoirs and changes in lake levels can trigger earthquakes by two processes of stress modifications, namely direct loading effect of the reservoir and diffusion through various faults and fractures. In this paper we analysed the reservoir water level data at Koyna and Warna reservoirs prior to the occurrence of the March 14, 2005 earthquake, to explain the dominant mechanism behind its occurrence and its correlation with the observed coseismic changes. We conclude that the diffusion process, not the reservoir load effect, is the dominating mechanism triggering earthquakes in the region. The coseismic changes in deep well water levels sensitive to earth tides are found to be to the order of 1–12 cm. 相似文献

This paper presents the case histories of two catastrophic landslips in hard rock terrains with varied climatic and geological environments. The first slip is associated with a power project in very close proximity (200 m) of the Porthimund Dam (11°22N, 76°3430E), in a charnockitic terrain in the Nilgiri hills (Tamil Nadu), and the second is associated with a railroad structure (19°525N, 78°1720E), in Adilabad district (Andhra Pradesh), in a basaltic terrain.The landslip in the charnockites is attributable to: (1) a high degree of saprolitization in the charnockites, with maximum intensity in the crest portion; (2) the coincidence of a major joint pattern in a NE-SW direction, with the strike of the foliation; and (3) the poor-to-fair physical rock quality in the crest and scarp portions.The slips in the basaltic terrain are due to: (1) the partially altered, highly jointed nature of the regional trap rocks with boulder sizes varying from 20 cm to 250 cm in diameter and the debris accumulating in a precarious condition on the northeast side of the rail track, with unfavorable alignment direction; and (2) the instability created in the weak rock mass by the vibrational forces of heavily loaded running trains.The weathered state of the rock masses in both the cases, showing good agreement with their physical state, accounts for the landslips. Detection of ships and their tracks in the atmosphere from satellites was earlier demonstrated by Porch, Noone, and Kaufman, among others. In this letter, we have gone one step further to estimate the ship speed and direction by locating them and their tracks from multisatellite imagery. Exhausts from the ships create streaks of clouds in the atmosphere that help identify the same ship from two satellites. Ship velocities are estimated from displacements of ships. We have used optical sensors data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Ocean Color Monitor (OCM) to demonstrate this technique. Estimated velocities of ships are within the expected range. Application of this approach has general interest to the navy, coast guards, shipping corporations, commercial ship owners, and fishermen. More satellite observations can be used to continuously monitor the ship velocities. 相似文献

The application of variations in the earth's gravity in groundwater exploration on a regional scale, especially in sedimentary
basins, metamorphic terrains, valley fills, and for buried alluvial channels, is well established. However, its use in hard
crystalline rocks is little known. In granite, for example, the upper weathered layer is a potential primary aquifer, and
the underlying fractured rock can form a secondary aquifer. Fracturing and weathering increases the porosity of a rock, thereby
reducing the bulk density. Changes in gravity anomalies of 0.1–0.7 mGal for granites, due to weathering or variations in lithology,
can be detected.
To test the use of gravity as a groundwater exploration tool for crystalline rocks, a gravity survey of the peninsular shield
granites underlying Osmania University Campus, Hyderabad, India, was undertaken. At the site, gravity anomalies reflect variations
in the lithology and in the thickness of weathered zones. These anomalies also define the position of intrusives and lineaments.
Areas of more deeply weathered granite that contain wells of higher groundwater yield are represented by negative gravity
values. In the weathered zone, well yield has an inverse relation to the magnitudes of residual gravity. The study confirms
the feasibility of gravity as a tool for groundwater exploration in crystalline rocks.

Laser microprobe for the study of noble gases and nitrogen in single grains: A case study of individual chondrules from the Dhajala meteorite 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A laser microprobe capable of analysing nitrogen and noble gases in individual grains with masses less than a milligram is
described. It can be used in both continuous wave (CW) mode, useful for stepwise heating of an individual grain, as well as
in pulsed mode, useful for ablating material from a small selected area of a sample, for gas extraction. We could achieve
low blanks (in ccSTP units) for 4He(4.8 x 10{-12}),22Ne(1.0 x 10{-12}),36Ar(1.0 x10
-13),84Kr(2.9 x 10{-14}),132 Xe(2.6 x 10{-14}), and N (87 pg), using this system. Preliminary data for individual chondrules from the Dhajala meteorite show that noble
gases and nitrogen from grains as small as 170 microgram can be analysed using the present laser microprobe setup. The amount
of trapped neon in Dhajala chondrules is very small, and nitrogen in the chondrules is isotopically heavier as compared to

Tsunamis have occurred in Canada due to earthquakes, landslides, and a large chemical explosion. The Pacific coast is at greatest risk from tsunamis because of the high incidence of earthquakes and landslides in that region. The most destructive historical tsunamis, however, have been in Atlantic Canada – one in 1917 in Halifax Harbour, which was triggered by a catastrophic explosion on a munitions ship, and another in 1929 in Newfoundland, caused by an earthquake-triggered landslide at the edge of the Grand Banks. The tsunami risk along Canada's Arctic coast and along the shores of the Great Lakes is low in comparison to that of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Public awareness of tsunami hazard and risk in Canada is low because destructive tsunamis are rare events. 相似文献
