1 INTRODUCTION Considerable amount of sediment discharge enters in a canal at the head works. This sediment discharge is carried safely as the slopes of the canal in the head reaches are large. Subsequently, for economy, the slopes of canal are reduced in the downstream reaches. This makes the sediment concentration far excess of its carrying capacity. This excess sediment has to be removed by suitable design of a sedimentation basin. Also, one of the requirements for successful function… 相似文献

Design equations for minimum area or maximum velocity canal-sections for transport of bulk sediment carried by water have been obtained. Such canals are economically feasible in the terrain where large slopes are available. The design procedure is illustrated by a practical example. 相似文献

l 1NTRODUCTIONAs the sediment cAned by the river gets dePositOd in the reservoir, there is a pro gressive reduction in itscaPacity to hold water. For examPle the Zuni reservoir on river Zuni, a tributary of the little ColoradO atBlack rock, New Mexico, U.S.A., lost aboat 75% caPacity in just 20 years. Sindlary, just in l0 years theIchari reservoir on river Tons, a tribUtary of river Yamuna (Inda), reduced to about l5% of its originalcaPacity. Thus, at the planning stage, one must … 相似文献

1 INTRODUCTIONA stable channel is a stream in equilibrium that is neither silting nor scouring over a period of time.Obviously, such a stream has developed a cross sectional area of flow through natural processes ofdeposition and scour. Gilbert (Chang 1988) in 1880 was perhaps the first to recognize the role ofndnilnization processes in arriving at an equilibrium cross-section of such a stream. Langbein (1964)gave an arbitrarily formed function of various knit powers obtained by dividing … 相似文献

Approximate but accurate, simple invertible equations for the consolidation curves under triangular excess pore-water pressures
are developed. These approximations can be used to calculate the degree of consolidation corresponding to a specified time
factor (explicit) or the time factor corresponding to a specified degree of consolidation (implicit). Explicit equations are
also developed for estimating the consolidation coefficient and final settlement, from two settlement readings, using the
proposed approximations. 相似文献

The grain size distribution of particulate material is of particular interest in the field of sediment transport. The size distribution is described by various equations, however no equation is flexible enough to satisfy the grain size distribution data faithfully. Presented herein are the equations for unimodal and multimodal grain size distribution curves. A graphical method has been given to evaluate the parameters involved in these equations. The size distribution equation can be used to estimate many properties of sediment sample like number of sediment particles, surface area of the particles and hydraulic conductivity. It is hoped that the equations will find many applications in studying sedimentation processes. 相似文献
