ABSTRACT

The October 2011 sinking of the container ship MV Rena on Astrolabe Reef, New Zealand, provided a rare opportunity to examine the fate of shipwreck-derived contaminants on an offshore rocky reef and food chain. Analyses of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organotins indicated significant but localised contamination of Astrolabe Reef but not of nearby Mōtītī Island. Three years after the grounding, PAH concentrations were greater in sediments at Astrolabe (up to 131?mg kg?1) than at control locations, while organotins from the ship's antifouling hull paint were found exclusively in Astrolabe Reef sediments and biota. Over 80% of Astrolabe sediment samples contained tributyltin at concentrations above guideline sediment levels (>0.07?mg kg?1). Tributyltin and its decomposition products were also recorded in sea urchins, gastropods, lobster and fishes at concentrations up to 0.2?mg kg?1. Wreck and cargo-derived metals, particularly copper, tin and zinc, were present in some Astrolabe sediment samples above Australia and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council guideline concentrations. However, there appeared to be only limited transmission of metals through the food chain. Copper, tin and zinc were recorded at greater concentrations in Astrolabe sea urchins and gastropods compared to control specimens, while metal concentrations in other biota were comparable across impact and control sites. Despite over 3 years having passed since the Rena grounding, the data series does not show any upward or downward trends in contaminant concentrations on Astrolabe Reef. Consequently, there is uncertainty about the long-term implications of the Rena grounding for the ecology of Astrolabe Reef.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To investigate the uptake and depuration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons associated with the Rena oil spill we sampled the surf clam Paphies subtriangulata at two open coast locations (6?km apart) just prior to oil coming ashore (7 October 2011), then at 1–3 week intervals for the next 4 months. Total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (tPAH) increased at both sites from 1 to 96–124?µg?kg?1 (wet weight) by 18 October before declining to low levels (<4?µg?kg?1) by February 2012. Ongoing sampling throughout 2012–2014 included three additional sites to the north east (up to 30?km away) and a site 5?km to the south east revealing tPAH levels generally <10?µg?kg?1 except in October 2013 where levels ranged between 39–45?µg?kg?1 at all sites. A comparison of PAH component profiles with oil-contaminated beach sediment indicated that the high levels observed in surf clams between October–December 2011 were clearly associated with the Rena spill. However, the October 2013 peak had a PAH profile inconsistent with weathered Rena oil, suggesting an alternative source of contamination. Our results highlight the potential for P. subtriangulata as a PAH monitoring tool but recognise more study is needed to better quantify baseline levels and uptake and depuration dynamics.  相似文献

In the central Skagerrak between Norway and Denmark, the seasonal thermocline tends to be relatively shallow (10 to 15 m) probably due to geostrophic effects. An investigation of phytoplankton distribution in this region in late August 1981 showed the presence of an intense subsurface chlorophyll maximum (up to 30 γ 1 Chl a) at a temperature of <6°C, dominated by coccolithophores and the dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum minimum. Data are presented on the vertical distribution of zooplankton in relation to these phytoplankton populations.  相似文献

Measurements were made of photosynthesis and calcification in a bloom of coccolithophores in the Gulf of Maine as well as in laboratory batch cultures of the Emiliania huxleyi strain 88E. The14C technique for measuring calcification was evaluated with calcifying and noncalcifying coccolithophore strains. Shipboard bloom observations showed physiological evidence of stratification between surface and deep populations within the surface mixed layer. Photosynthesis and calcification rates were enhanced within hours of addition of KNO3 or nitrate-rich deep water (to the same final concentration). Such rates were strongly temperature dependent in laboratory cultures, decreasing over a factor of two from 15 to 20°C. Calcification was considerably less light-dependent than photosynthesis and consistently had a measurable dark rate. In culture, maximum calcification rates and degree of cell plating were limited to logarithmic growth phase. This was followed by rapid increase in the coccolith shedding rate 1 day prior to the onset of stationary phase which continued several days after cell division stopped. The regional significance of these features to total organic and inorganic carbon production as well as calcite burial is discussed.  相似文献

Vertical sections of temperature and chlorophyll a across the slopes and shelf of the Celtic Sea in the summer show the characteristic regimes; oceanic, slope, shelf, frontal, and mixed. Increases of surface chlorophyll a are commonly observed along the shelf tidal fronts where the thermocline outcrops at the surface, and also at the shelf-break. The variations in phytoplankton biomass are most readily interpreted in terms of the effects of physical mixing processes due to wind and tide on the availability of inorganic nutrients and light energy. On the shelf, mixing processes, both due to internal waves, inertial currents, and to boundary induced turbulence caused by tidal shear associated with the sea floor, play an important role in determining the observed vertical structures. A numerical model is used to define regions where tidal mixing processes are likely to be relatively important and provides the physical framework for interpreting the temperature and chlorophyll a profiles.  相似文献

The Atlantic Meridional Transect programme uses the twice-annual passage of the RRS James Clark Ross between the UK and the Falkland Islands, before and after the Antarctic research programme in the Austral Summer (see Aiken, J., & Bale, A. J. (2000). An introduction to the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) Programme. Progress in Oceanography, this issue). This paper examines the scientific rationale for a spatially-extensive time and space series programme and reviews the relevant physical and biological oceanography of the Atlantic Ocean. The main scientific observations from the research programme are reported. These are set in the context of historical and contemporary observations pertinent to the principal objectives of the cruise, notably the satellite remotely sensed observations of ocean properties. The extent to which the programme goals have been realised by the research to date is assessed and discussed. New bio-optical signatures, which can be related to productivity parameters, have been derived. These can be used to interpret remotely sensed observations of ocean colour in terms of productivity and production processes such as the air/sea exchange of biogenic gases, which relate to the issues of climate change and the sustainability of marine ecosystems.  相似文献

We present an overview of the spatial distributions of phytoplankton pigments along transects between the UK and the Falkland Islands. These studies, undertaken as a component of the UK Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme, provided the first post-launch validation data for the NASA SeaWiFS satellite. Pigment data are used to characterise basin-scale variations in phytoplankton biomass and community composition over 100° of latitude, and to compliment the definition of hydrographic oceanic provinces. A summary of the key pigment characteristics of each province is presented.Concentrations of total chlorophyll a (totCHLa = chlorophyll a, CHLa + divinyl CHLa, dvCHLa) were greatest in high latitude temperate waters (>37°N and >35°S), and in the Canary Current Upwelling system. In these regions, the total carotenoid (totCAR) budget was dominated by photosynthetic carotenoids (PSCs). High accessory pigment diversity was observed of which fucoxanthin (FUC), 19'–hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (HEX), and diadinoxanthin (DIAD) were most abundant, indicating proliferation of large eukaryotes and nanoflagellates. In contrast, tropical and sub-tropical waters exhibited concentrations of totCHLa below 500 ng l−1, with the North Atlantic Sub-tropical East gyre (NASE, 26.7–35°N), South Equatorial Current (SeqC, 7–14.6°S) and South Atlantic tropical Gyre (SATG, 14.6–26°S) characterised by totCHLa of <100 ng−1. These waters exhibited relatively limited pigment diversity, and the totCAR budget was dominated by photoprotecting pigments (PPCs) of which zeaxanthin (ZEA), a marker of prokaryotes (cyanobacteria and prochlorophytes), was most abundant. DvCHLa, a marker of prochlorophytes was detected in waters at temperatures >15°C, and between the extremes of 48°N and 42°S. DvCHLa accounted for up to two-thirds of totCHLa in oligotrophic provinces demonstrating the importance of prochlorophytes to oceanic biomass.Overall, HEX was the dominant PSC, contributing up to 75% of totCAR. HEX always represented >2% of totCAR and was the only truly ubiquitous carotenoid. Since HEX is a chemotaxonomic marker of prymnesiophytes, this observation reflects the truly cosmopolitan distribution of this algal class. ZEA was found to be the most abundant PPC contributing more than one third of the total carotenoid budget in each transect.Greatest seasonality was observed in highly productive waters at high latitudes and in shallow continental shelf waters and attributed to proliferation of large eukaryotes during spring. Concentrations of the prokaryote pigments (ZEA + dvCHLa) also exhibited some seasonality, with elevated concentrations throughout most of the transect during Northern Hemisphere spring.  相似文献

In the weeks following the 2011 Rena oil spill, a series of surveys was initiated on eight rocky intertidal reefs to describe the distribution of oil and to assess the impacts of oil on ecological communities. Consistent but relatively low cover of oil occurred at two sites (Mt Maunganui and Moturiki). The area covered by oil had decreased by c. 90% after 5 months due to natural weathering processes. There were immediate effects of oil fouling on the mussel Limnoperna pulex and its associated fauna, with reductions in the number of mussels and infaunal taxonomic richness. However, no ecological effects on any of the communities were detectable after 1 month. Overall, the ecological effects of the Rena oil spill on rocky shore intertidal communities were small and not long-lasting, but we stress that this does not consider potential sublethal effects and their consequences on organisms.  相似文献

The results are presented from three hydrogrpahic surveys in April 1979 of a 40 × 50 km region of the Celtic Sea, centred at 7°W and 51°N, using a towed undulating sensor system. In the 512 days between Surveys 1 and 2, the seasonal thermocline was established, with surface to bottom temperature differences reaching 1.5°C, the average surface chlorophyll a level increased from ~ 1 to ~ 5.5 mg m?3 due mainly to the growth of diatoms, and the surface nitrate concentration decreased from 6 to 1 μM. The third survey was carried out after a further two days and, although surface properties changed little, there was a general deepening of the mixed layer due to stronger winds, and a further increase in the standing stock of phytoplankton.By applying appropriate techniques of horizontal spatial averaging, which took into account possible advective effects, a quantitative comparison was made of the changes at two positions in the survey area which showed significant differences in the rate of development of the phytoplankton population. A simple model of phytoplankton growth was then developed, based on calculations of eddy diffusivity, on measurements of rates of photosynthetic carbon assimilation, and on observations of carbon to chlorophyll ratios, subsurface light attenuation and inorganic nutrient levels. In the absence of any data on zooplankton populations, the loss of phytoplankton by grazing was left as a free parameter. The model was only partly successful in reproducing the observed changes in chlorophyll concentrations during the first 512 days and showed serious limitations for the subsequent 2 days. However, it emphasised several features of the dynamics of spring phytoplankton populations which require further experimental or observational investigation. These include more precise measurements of carbon to chlorophyll ratios and grazing pressure to which the model is sensitive over a rather narrow range (this has important implications in terms both of control by grazing and nutrient limitation), the potential significance of physiological photoadaptation by the plant cells in determining their vertical distribution, and the role of eddy diffusion across the developing thermocline in relation to the sinking of phytoplankton cells and the upward mixing of inorganic nutrients.  相似文献
