Summary. Palaeomagnetic investigations were carried out on nine lava flows around the Dhar region, which constitute the northern part of the Deccan traps. The stability of remanent magnetism of these specimens was analysed by an alternating magnetic field, thermal demagnetization and memory tests. Six flows exhibited characteristic components of magnetization, with a mean direction of D =143°, I =+46° ( K = 107.1, α95 =5.5°). This gives a VGP located at 29° N, 67° W (δp =4.5°, δm = 7.0°). The lower site with normal magnetization and the upper five sites with reverse magnetization indicate a geomagnetic field reversal during the initial phases of Deccan volcanism in the Early Tertiary period. A rapid northward migration of about 18° in latitude and a simultaneous anticlockwise rotation of 37° is calculated for the subcontinent. 相似文献

Assessing changes in food-web structure provides a useful monitoring tool for gauging the resilience of ecosystems in the face of climatic impacts. We consider the ecological resilience of a large estuarine lake (St Lucia Estuary, South Africa) in the wake of an extreme climatic event (prolonged drought). Using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, food-web structure was assessed at five sites across the estuary during the winter and spring of 2013. Sampling occurred approximately three years after heavy rains flooded the system and returned it to a relatively diluted state following an almost decade-long drought that decimated food webs in the upper parts of the estuary due to hypersalinity effects. Comparisons of niche width and variance of consumer food webs among sites revealed a general homogenisation of food webs across the entire system, contrasting with the spatial differentiation of food webs documented during the drought phase. Our results indicate that the estuary is able to maintain ecological resilience at the whole-system level in the face of an extreme drought. This is likely facilitated by source pools of species residing in the relatively stable lower estuary, which are able to rapidly recolonise areas denuded by drought in the upper estuary. 相似文献

The use of scrap-tire-shreds as leachate collection layer in landfills would reduce the magnitude of the current tire disposal
problem by converting a waste into a beneficial material. Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate scrap-tire-shreds
as an attractive potential alternative to conventional gravel in the drainage layer of leachate collection system by comparative
analysis of various physico-chemical parameters. Gravel and scrap-tire-shreds in combination were used as leachate collection
layer. Laboratory Test Cells consisting of different combinations of scrap-tire-shreds (size range length = 25.4 mm to 76.1 mm
and width = 5 mm) and gravel (size range 10 mm to 20 mm) beds as leachate collection layer with total bed thickness of 500 mm
were constructed. Performance study of Test Cells- 1 to 7, having different combinations of scrap-tire-shreds and gravel bed
thickness, were studied to work out the best combination. Combined beds of scrap-tire-shreds and gravel gave better results
as compared to conventional gravel or scrap- tire- shreds bed when used singly. Test Cell -3 having scrap-tire-shreds layer
(200 mm) and gravel layer (300 mm) gave the best results in terms of percentage reduction in various physico-chemical parameters
of leachate. The reduction was as high as 68.8 and 79.6% in case of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand
(COD) values respectively. Further, three more laboratory Test Cells-8, 9 and 10 were constructed having scrap-tire-shreds
and gravel layer ratio same as that of Test Cell- 3 (best combination) but having scrap-tire-shreds of different widths 10 mm,
15 mm and 20 mm to find out the most suitable size. Bed of smaller size scrap-tire-shreds (5 mm) gave better results in comparison
to bigger sizes. Leachate sample after passing through combined beds of scrap-tire-shreds and gravel gave better results in
percentage reduction in various physico-chemical parameters of leachate as compared to conventional gravel or scrap-tire-shreds

199年至1998年伽师地区共出现9次震级为6.1-6.8级的强震. 在一个非常短的时间间隔内和非常小的地区范围内接连出现这么多次震级非常接近的地震,确实非常罕见. 为研究伽师强震区的深部构造背景和孕震机制,本文对伽师地震区的余震观测资料进行了分析处理. 利用联合反演技术同时得到了地震震源位置和地震区地壳三维速度结构. 余震震中沿一北北东向条带分布,与强震分布的两个条带中的北东向条带位置基本重合. 三维反演得到的速度结构结果表明,在地下12 km以下存在一条北北东向和一条北北西向的低速条带. 上述两低速条带与强震分布的两个条带位置很接近. 初步推测,低速条带对应了地壳深部的两条断裂. 在我们观测期间,北北东向断裂有微震活动,北北西向断裂相对平静. 相似文献

A background indoor air study has been completed which includes the collection of indoor air samples from office buildings and schools. The anonymous study was designed with input from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The sampling was implemented in 2013, 2014, and 2015 and included the collection of 25 school building samples and 61 office building samples. The study generated 14,668 new indoor air background data points, with samples collected from buildings located in 26 cities in 18 states, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Washington. Indoor air background concentrations of target compound volatile organic compounds (VOCs) ranged from less than the laboratory method reporting limit of 0.044 μg/m3 to concentrations up to 1190 μg/m3, with hydrocarbon ranges from less than the reporting method limit of 10 μg/m3 to concentrations up to 3000 μg/m3. Some VOCs were identified ubiquitously in indoor air background, and some were identified at concentrations which exceeded risk-based regulatory screening levels. These study results provide useful and updated information on indoor air background and air quality in offices and schools and can be used in future regulatory guidance update considerations, for further examination of relationships between these data and residential study data, in human health risk assessments and risk communication, and in planning future studies. 相似文献

Saturation remanent hysteresis studies were carried out on numerous dolerite dyke samples from the peninsular India. These studies result in four types of remanent hysteresis curves which indicate that the magnetic material is magnetite or titanomagnetite with variable grain-size having remanent coercive forces (H

) of 8 to 30 mT, requiring saturating fields (H

) up to 250 mT. Two extreme types of samples with (1) low coercive forces requiring high saturating fields and (2) high coercive forces requiring low saturating fields are noticed along with the generally observed ones. The Granulometric and Lowrie-Fuller Tests on these samples indicated that the magnetic material i.e., magnetite or titanomagnetite in these rocks is in the form of Multi-Domain (MD), Cation Deficient (CD) and a mixture of these two forms (MD+CD) within. 相似文献

Summary. Fifty-six orientated samples were collected from 13 sites on five dolerite dykes (between lat.14°23°N, long.77°43'E and lat.14°08'N, long. 77°49'E), which adjoin the south-western margin of the Cuddapah basin in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. After af demagnetization, two dykes (five sites) striking ENE possess similar magnetic directions, (1) D = 57°, 1=-69° (K = 52, α95 = 7°) and (2) D = 71°, I = -72° ( K = 260, α95 = 5°). Again dykes (3) (three sites), and (4) (two sites) have similar strike (NE) and magnetic directions, D = 64°. I=-7 α( K = 142, α95 = 8°) and D = 53°, I =-8° (K = 142, α95 = 6°) and dyke (5) (two sites) striking NW shows D = 320°, I = -34° ( K = 68, α95 = 13°). Remanent directions estimated from total field magnetic anomaly data agree well with these results. Synthesis of these data with 10 other published palaeomagnetic studies of Precambrian dolerite dykes on the Indian peninsula, suggest that these three systems of dykes adjoining the Cuddapah basin had been emplaced prior to the basin formation perhaps representing the initial thermal event responsible for the basin development and also that there have been at least three separate periods of dyke emplacement on this shield. The radiometric data, however, are very sparse and these periods cannot be dated with confidence. 相似文献
