Sediment archives from a mountain lake are used as indicators of seismotectonic activity in the Grenoble area (French western Alps, 45°N). Sedimentological analysis (texture and grain-size characteristics) exhibits several layers resulting from instantaneous deposits in Lake Laffrey: six debris flow events up to 8 cm thick can be attributed to slope failure along the western flank of the basin. Dating with 210Pb and 137Cs gamma counting techniques and the reconnaissance of historical events, provide a constrained age-depth model. Over the last 250 years, five of such debris flow deposits could be related to historical earthquakes of MSK intensities greater than VI over an area of <60 km. One debris flow deposit triggered at the beginning of the last century can be related to an historical landslide possibly triggered by the artificial regulation of the lake level.  相似文献

Fluxes contributing to the particulate carbonate system in deep-sea sediments were investigated at the BENGAL site in the Porcupine Abyssal Plain (Northeast Atlantic). Deposition fluxes were estimated using sediment traps at a nominal depth of 3000 m and amounted to 0.37±0.1 mmol C m−2 d−1. Dissolution of carbonate was determined using flux of total alkalinity from in situ benthic chambers, is 0.4±0.1 mmol C m−2 d−1. Burial of carbonate was calculated from data on the carbonate content of the sediment and sedimentation rates from a model age based on 14C dating on foraminifera (0.66±0.1 mmol C m−2 d−1). Burial plus dissolution was three times larger than particle deposition flux which indicates that steady-state is not achieved in these sediments. Mass balances for other components (BSi, 210Pb), and calculations of the focusing factor using 230Th, show that lateral inputs play only a minor role in this imbalance. Decadal variations of annual particle fluxes are also within the uncertainty of our average. Long-term change in dissolution may contribute to the imbalance, but can not be the main reason because burial alone is greater than the input flux. The observed imbalance is thus the consequence of a large change of carbonate input flux which has occured in the recent past. A box model is used to check the response time of the solid carbonate system in these sediments and the time to reach a new steady-state is in the order of 3 kyr. Thus it is likely that the system has been perturbed recently and that large dissolution and burial rates reflect the previously larger particulate carbonate deposition rates. We estimate that particulate carbonate fluxes have certainly decreased by a factor of at least 3 and that this change has occurred during the last few centuries.  相似文献

Four sediment cores from the Polar frontal zone and the Antarctic zone in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean present an increase of authigenic uranium during glacial periods. We show that this increase in uranium is due to a combination of (i) an increase in the lateral transport of organic matter, (ii) a decrease in the oxygen in deep waters, and (iii) a process of diagenesis. It appears that uranium concentration cannot be used as a proxy of palaeoproductivity in the Southern Ocean, as previously suggested by Kumar et al. in 1995. To cite this article: L. We measured 228Raex/226Raex and 226Raex/Baex ratios in suspended and sinking particles collected at the Oceanic Flux Program (OFP) time-series site in the western Sargasso Sea and compared them to seawater ratios to provide information on the origin and transport of barite (BaSO4) in the water column. The 228Raex/226Raex ratios of the suspended particles down to 2000 m are nearly identical to those of seawater at the same water depth. These ratios are much lower than expected if suspended barite was produced in surface waters and indicate that barite is produced throughout the mesopelagic layer. The 228Raex/226Raex activity ratios of sinking particles collected at 1500 and 3200 m varied mostly between 0.1 and 0.2, which is intermediate between the seawater ratio at these depths (<0.03) and the seawater ratios found in the upper 250 m (0.31-0.42). This suggests that excess Ba (i.e., Baex = Batotal − Balithogenic), considered to be mainly barite, present in the sinking flux is a mixture of crystals formed recently in the upper water column, formed several years earlier in the upper water column, or formed recently in deeper waters. We observe a sizeable temporal variability in the 228Raex/226Raex ratios of sinking particles, which indicates temporal variability in the relative proportion of barite crystals originating from surface (with a high 228Raex/226Raex ratio) and mesopelagic (with a low 228Raex/226Raex ratio) sources. However, we could not discern a clear pattern that would elucidate the factors that control this variability. The 226Ra/Ba ratios measured in seawater are consistent with the value reported from the GEOSECS expeditions (2.3 dpm μmol−1) below 500 m depth, but are significantly lower in the upper 500 m. High 226Raex/Baex ratios and elevated Sr concentrations in suspended particles from the upper water column suggest preferential uptake of 226Ra over Ba during formation of SrSO4 skeletons by acantharians, which must contribute to barite formation in shallow waters. Deeper in the water column the 226Raex/Baex ratios of suspended particles are lower than those of seawater. Since 228Raex/226Raex ratios demonstrate that suspended barite at these depths has been produced recently and in situ, their low 226Raex/Baex ratios indicate preferential uptake of Ba over Ra in barite formed in mesopelagic water.  相似文献

The lowest stratigraphic unit of Theopetra cave (Greece) contains a Middle Palaeolithic sequence radiocarbon dated to between 46 and 35 ka BP; at the limit of this dating method. The upper part of this sequence has yielded late Middle Palaeolithic lithic assemblages containing several early Upper Palaeolithic artifacts. To get more precise dates for the human occupation of the cave, burnt flint specimens from these Middle Palaeolithic layers were dated by thermoluminescence. The dates obtained are coherent and indicate that the first human occupation of the cave took place at the end of isotopic stage 6 or more probably at the beginning of stage 5, much earlier than previously proposed. In the light of this new evidence, it is reasonable to assume that: (a) Theopetra contains the oldest dated Middle Palaeolithic deposits of Greece and (b) that the assemblages first interpreted as “Transitional Middle/Upper Palaeolithic” industries may be the result of post-depositional mixing of cultural material.  相似文献

Production rates of22Na (T1/2 = 2.6years) from aluminium by the action of cosmic rays are measured at the Mont Blanc (altitude 4600 m), the Aiguille du Midi (3840 m), and the Col du Lautaret (2070 m). They are2.3 ± 0.5,1.8 ± 0.3,and0.77 ± 0.18 atoms min?1 kg?1, respectively, in good agreement with the calculated production rates, 2.4, 1.7 and 0.6 atoms min?1 kg?1, respectively, at the three stations.Production rates of24Na (T1/2 = 15hours) from aluminium and magnesium are also measured at the Aiguille du Midi; the observed rates of3.4 ± 0.4and6.0 ± 1.7 atoms min?1 kg?1, respectively, agree well with the theoretically expected rates of 3.7 and 5.6 atoms min?1 kg?1.The production rates of3H,7Be,10Be,14C,22Na,26Al,36Cl,37Ar,39Ar,53Mn,54Mn, and55Fe in terrestrial rocks by the action of cosmic rays are calculated in order to show the possibility of applying the measurements of these cosmogenic radionuclides to the earth science.  相似文献

Lake Shkodra (northern Albania, southern Montenegro) is a large (45 km length, 15 km width) and shallow (5 m mean depth) lake, developed on a mainly karstic carbonate substratum. Its recent sedimentary fill (mixed calcareous/siliciclastic clayey silts) was analysed through short gravity cores representing five centuries of environmental archive. A combination of high resolution texture analysis (particle size), magnetic susceptibility, carbon content, and radionuclide activity profiles (210Pb, 137Cs, 241Am) permitted us to detect and date environmental changes, such as the Little Ice Age and the 1962–1963 catastrophic floods. Anthropogenic influences on the watershed, such as damming of the Drin River in the late 1970s, also appear to be recorded. Impacts of known strong earthquakes (1905, 1979), however, could not be clearly detected in the sediment record. The potential of the Shkodra lacustrine archive for paleoseismic investigations on long time intervals (such as Holocene) is discussed. This paper is a preliminary contribution to Shkodra Lake’s Holocene paleolimnology.  相似文献

As part of a chronological study of the famous Upper Pleistocene Nussloch (Germany) loess sequence, three samples were collected to check the applicability of palaeodosimetric dating methods (OSL and ESR) to quartz grains. The ESR-multicentre method showed a partial bleaching of the ESR centers in aeolian sands. This partial bleaching was also observed by OSL. Laminated loess seemed to be sufficiently bleached but showed a large scatter of the doses, which we ascribed to heterogeneous responses of the luminescent grains to the SAR protocol. Ages could nevertheless be calculated for the three samples and were found to be somewhat older than the IRSL and 14C ages obtained for the same layers of the laminated loess.  相似文献
