Long-term home-range and movement dynamics of spotted grunter Pomadasys commersonnii and the distribution of their dominant prey, the sandprawn Callichirus kraussi, were investigated in the intermittently open East Kleinemonde Estuary, South Africa. In addition, the effects of fish length, diel cycle, season and other abiotic factors on home range and area use were examined. Nine adult spotted grunter (326–489?mm total length) were tagged with acoustic transmitters, and their movements were studied by manual tracking on six consecutive days and nights during each of five tracking sessions from March to November 2004. In addition, movement patterns were recorded by stationary data-logging receivers. Kernel home ranges (95% utilised distribution) varied in size (mean: 76 797?m2?, range: 26 296–165 321?m2), but were all located in the lower one-third of the 3.6 km-long estuary. There was no effect of season, the diel cycle or fish length on the home-range estimates. However, the distribution of prey corresponded with the home-range distribution of tagged fish. Although sandprawn distribution was highly variable within and among transects and depth classes, sandprawns were most abundant in the lower region of the estuary, which corresponded to the home-range distribution of spotted grunter. Spatial distribution of prey appears to be a dominant factor influencing home-range parameters of this species within an intermittently open estuary.  相似文献

Understanding the level of connectivity between estuarine and coastal waters is essential for appropriate management of estuarine-associated taxa. Most studies have focused on the role of a single estuary, while limited research exists on the importance of multiple estuaries to individuals of estuarine-associated species. This study used acoustic telemetry to assess the usage of multiple estuaries and coastal waters by the estuarine-dependent spotted grunter Pomadasys commersonnii. Twenty-six adult fish were tagged with acoustic transmitters in the Kariega and Bushmans estuaries, South Africa, and their movements along a 300-km stretch of Indian Ocean coastline were monitored for up to 17 months. Tagged individuals spent most of their time in the estuary where they were tagged (55% and 85% for fish tagged in the two estuaries, respectively), followed by time in the sea (30% and 15%) and in other estuaries (15% and <1%). The mean durations of sea trips for fish tagged in the Kariega Estuary or Bushmans Estuary, respectively, were 25 days (range 3–55) and 12 days (range 2–22). Of the fish that went to sea, 93% from the Kariega Estuary and 60% from the Bushmans Estuary visited other estuaries. Most visits were undertaken to the Swartkops, Bushmans and Kowie estuaries, although the longest durations were spent in the Sundays Estuary. Individuals moved to estuaries up to 130 km away. The total distance travelled between estuaries by an individual during the study was ~529 km, with means of 201 and 184 km, respectively, for fish tagged in the Kariega and Bushmans estuaries. Despite covering large distances between estuaries, individuals often returned to their tagging estuary. Residency in their tagging estuary, combined with frequent visits to a neighbouring estuary, highlights the importance of estuarine habitats for this popular fish species, even after reaching maturity.  相似文献

We report on the patterns in zooplankton community structure on the Newfoundland and Labrador Shelf from seasonal collections along oceanographic sections during 2000–2007. We use a combination of constrained and unconstrained multivariate methods to assess latitudinal and cross shelf patterns in community structure. Both physical and biological features of the region are dominated by the cross-shelf gradient in water mass characteristics although there is evidence of a latitudinal gradient that may be a reflection of the influence of freshwater outflow from the Arctic. All analyses reveal a strong and consistent pattern in species composition among water masses that extends across spring, summer and autumn, although there are some variations that occur among seasons that reflect differences in development state of certain taxa. The strong association between community structure and water mass characteristics in the region may be the result of the Newfoundland and Labrador Shelf being at the intersection of several major oceanographic domains, bounded by strong Labrador and Gulf Stream currents, that allows the formation and persistence of well defined zooplankton communities. Our findings have implications for the region’s potential as a monitoring location for long term changes in ocean state.  相似文献

The longline is modelled using lumped masses and tension-only springs including structural damping. The mussel culture is modelled as cylinders attached to the main line and the equations are formulated for the coupled dynamics of the main line, buoys and mussel socks using Kane's formalism. Surface waves are described by Stokes’ second-order wave theory. The hydrodynamic loads are applied via a Morison's equation approach using the instantaneous relative velocities and accelerations between the fluid field, the longline and the attached buoys and mussel masses. The algorithm is presented and the equations are solved using the Runge–Kutta routine “ode45” in MATLAB. Outputs include position, orientation and velocity of all components and tension in all line segments. The numerical model may be used to predict the dynamics of longline systems using drag coefficients determined from field measurements. We expect that the results will be useful for checking and optimizing shellfish aquaculture designs prior to installation and for modifying existing designs to safeguard against failure.  相似文献

Moving to open ocean locations will require the aquaculture industry to fundamentally change the way it develops installations due to increased environmental loads and longer distances from shore. With reference to the same technical issues faced by the oil producing offshore industry, technical and engineering challenges that are likely to face the aquaculture industry are identified with an emphasis on conditions off the east coast of Canada. Requirements are discussed with a view toward identifying areas where the aquaculture industry can borrow technology from the oil industry and areas where the Canadian aquaculture industry faces challenges unique to itself.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Present global climate models (GCMs) are unable to provide reliable projections of physical oceanographic properties on the continental shelf off Newfoundland and Labrador. Here we first establish linear statistical relationships between oceanographic properties and coastal air temperature based on historical observations. We then use these relationships to project future states of oceanographic conditions under different emission scenarios, based on projected coastal air temperatures from global (Canadian Earth System Model, version 2 (CanESM2), Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's Earth System Model, version 2M (GFDL-ESM2M)) and regional (Canadian Regional Climate Model (CRCM)) climate models. Estimates based on CanESM2 agree reasonably well with observed trends, but the trends based on two other models result in substantial underestimates. Projected trends are closer to observations under a high emission scenario than under median-level emission scenarios. Over the next 50 years, the increases in projected sea surface temperature off eastern Newfoundland (Station 27) range from 0.4° to 2.2°C. The increases in bottom ocean temperature over the Newfoundland and Labrador Shelves range from 0.4° to 2.1°C. The area of the cold intermediate layer (<0°C) on the Flemish Cap (47°N) section is projected to decrease by 9–35% of the 1981–2010 average. The decline in sea-ice extent off Newfoundland and Labrador ranges from 20 to 77% of the average (0.4–1.5?×?105?km2), and the reduction in the number of icebergs at 48°N off Newfoundland ranges from 30% to nearly 100% of the norm at this latitude. Despite differences among the models and scenarios, statistical projections indicate that conditions in this region will reach or exceed their maxima (sea surface temperature, bottom ocean temperature) and reach or fall below their minima (sea-ice extent, number of icebergs) that were observed during the course of monitoring activities over the past 30–60 years, possibly as early as 2040. We note, however, that the statistical relationships based on historical data may not hold in the future because of the changing influence of input from Arctic waters and because of large uncertainties in projected air temperatures from GCMs.  相似文献

Potential flow based vortex numerical methods have been widely used in aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. In these methods, vortices shed from lifting bodies are traced by using vortex filaments or dipole panels. When the wake elements encounter a downstream body, such as a rudder behind a propeller or a stator behind a rotor, a treatment is necessary to divert the wake elements to pass by the body. This treatment is vital to make wake simulations realistic and to satisfy the non-penetration condition during wake body interaction. It also helps to avoid pure numerical disturbances such as when a vortex filament or an edge of a dipole panel passes through the collection point of a body element; this is a singularity for induced velocity and it will introduce a large numerical disturbance. This necessary treatment for three-dimensional problems with geometrical complexity has not been found to date. In this study, a wake impingement model was developed to divert wake elements to slip over the body surface, model the vortex/body interaction, and predict forces on fluctuating components. The model was also tested on configurations of oscillating foils in tandem with an existing panel method code. Simulation results with the wake impingement model are shown to be in closer agreement with limited published experimental data than those without the model. With the established wake impingement model, force fluctuations on the after body due to the wake vortex impingement were investigated based on a series of simulations. The series varied several parameters including distance between two foils, oscillating frequency, span, rear foil pitch angle, swap angle and vertical position.  相似文献
