Organic geochemical studies have been carried out to assess the qualities of source rocks penetrated by four wells (Kemar-1, Murshe-1, Tuma-1 and Ziye-1) in the Nigerian sector of the Chad basin. The Chad basin is a large intracratonic basin in Central West Africa. Commercial hydrocarbon accumulations have been discovered in some sectors of the basin outside the Nigerian border in a structurally related contiguous basin. Fair to poor quality source rocks are inherent in the sequences penetrated by the studied wells. About 80% of all samples have their total organic carbon (TOC) contents more than 0.5 wt.%, the minimum limit for hydrocarbon generation. Juxtaposition of the hydrogen indices against the TOC and Tmax indicates that the source rocks are entirely gas-prone. However, biomarker chromatograms and extract vs. TOC plots indicate the presence of oil shows in Ziye-1 well at a depth of 1210 m. Although generated hydrocarbons (wherever they have accumulated) would be overwhelmingly gaseous, gas is the energy of the future. The gas resources of this part of Nigeria's inland basins can be economically exploited through policies that will increase the tempo of gas-utilization projects and the construction of a national grid of gas pipelines with nodal points of input and output. 相似文献

The weight-specific respiration rate (μl O2 mg−1 AFDW h−1) of three species of leech from Lake Esrom, Denmark, Glossiphonia concolor, G. complanata and Helobdella stagnalis was measured in a closed stirred chamber with a micro electrode. At declining oxygen concentration (mg O2 l−1) all three species expressed moderate ability to regulate respiration, in G. concolor and G. complanata down to 2 mg O2 l−1, in H. stagnalis down to 0.75 mg O2 l−1. Survival in anoxia was measured in closed bottles. The time to 50% survival (LD50) was 30 days in G. concolor at 20 °C and 30 and 4 days in H. stagnalis at 10 and 20 °C, respectively. We present a general stratigraphic synthesis for the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) and the Swiss Molasse Basin (SMB) from Eocene to Pliocene times. The stratigraphic data were compiled both from literature and from research carried out by the authors during the past 6 years ; an index of the stratigraphically most important localitites is provided. We distinguish 14 geographical areas from the Helvetic domain in the South to the Hanau Basin in the North. For each geographical area, we give a synthesis of the biostratigraphy, lithofacies, and chronostratigraphic ranges. The relationships between this stratigraphic record and the global sea-level changes are generally disturbed by the geodynamic (e.g., subsidence) evolution of the basins. However, global sea-level changes probably affected the dynamic of transgression–regression in the URG (e.g., Middle Pechelbronn Beds and Serie Grise corresponding with sea-level rise between Ru1/Ru2 and Ru2/Ru3 sequences, respectively) as well as in the Molasse basin (regression of the UMM corresponding with the sea-level drop at the Ch1 sequence). The URGENT-project (Upper Rhine Graben evolution and neotectonics) provided an unique opportunity to carry out and present this synthesis. Discussions with scientists addressing sedimentology, tectonics, geophysics and geochemistry permitted the comparison of the sedimentary history and stratigraphy of the basin with processes controlling its geodynamic evolution. The south‐west region of the Goulburn–Broken catchment in the south‐eastern Murray–Darling Basin in Australia faces a range of natural resource challenges. A balanced strategy is required to achieve the contrasting objectives of remediation of land salinization and reducing salt export, while maintaining water supply security to satisfy human consumption and support ecosystems. This study linked the Catchment Analysis Tool (CAT), comprising a suite of farming system models, to the catchment‐scale CATNode hydrological model to investigate the effects of land use change and climate variation on catchment streamflow and salt export. The modelling explored and contrasted the impacts of a series of different revegetation and climate scenarios. The results indicated that targeted revegetation to only satisfy biodiversity outcomes within a catchment is unlikely to have much greater impact on streamflow and salt load in comparison with simple random plantings. Additionally, the results also indicated that revegetation to achieve salt export reduction can effectively reduce salt export while having a disproportionately smaller affect on streamflows. Furthermore, streamflow declines can be minimized by targeting revegetation activities without significantly altering salt export. The study also found that climate change scenarios will have an equal if not more significant impact on these issues over the next 70 years. Siliceous drift pumice was collected from a total of 40 beaches around the main island of New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific, in order to determine its provenance. New Caledonia is enclosed by a barrier reef lagoon whose 2008 designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site brought attention to the environmental degradation caused by a century of open cast nickel mining. The frequent, voluminous pumice eruptions in the Southwest Pacific provide ample source material that is somewhat durable, highly transportable in water, and easy to collect and analyze. Geochemical and mineralogical analyses were used to identify the source of the pumice in order to map the transport vector across the open ocean and into the lagoon. Drift pumice was sampled during 2008 and 2010. The mineral assemblage of the pumice was consistently calcic plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, and opaque minerals. All of the pumice was of fairly uniform geochemistry: low in mafic elements, low in alkalis, with LILE enriched compared to HFSE, and negative Eu, Ti, and Zr anomalies. The pumice is predominately dacitic and tholeiitic. This geochemical signature was consistent with published data from the Tonga arc, which is further supported by the mineralogy. With the exception of two samples (which probably came from either the Kermadec arc or Vanuatu) all of the pumice comes from the Tonga arc. The samples from 2008 are consistent with pumice erupted from Metis Shoal in 2006, and the majority of 2010 samples are consistent with pumice erupted from an unnamed volcano (0403-091) that erupted in 2001. 相似文献

The Permo-Carboniferous Schmidgaden, Weiden, Erbendorf and Stockheim basins from southern Germany host discontinuous seams of high ash coal and carbargillites which were mined for hard coal, explored for uranium and only recently have proved their source rock potential for gaseous and fluid hydrocarbons. Alteration and facies of these carbonaceous beds were geologically and chemically investigated. During silicification which is exclusively confined to the carbonaceous interbeds of pyroclastic depositions, element depletion prograded except for Zn, Pb, U. The anoxic environments under consideration may be subdivided into fluvial/swamp (Upper Westphalian beds from Schmidgaden, Weiden, Erbendorf and Stockheim) and lacustrine depositions (Upper Stephanian and Upper Autunian carbargillites from Erbendorf, Weiden-Bechtsrieth). SiO2, MgO, CaO, Mo and Zr have proved to be most suitable for recognition of these environments, whereas, U, K2O and notably Cu/Zn are less appropriate. In the ternary plots displaying the organic chemistry of extracts of these carbonaceous beds fluvial swamps have low and lacustrine beds high contents of saturated hydrocarbons. All samples show a pronounced OEP (=odd even predominance) of n-alkanes which partly are environment-controlled (terrestrial origin), partly maturity-controlled. The high iso- and cyclo-alkanes of Schmidgaden and bimodal n-alkyl distribution point to a contribution of algal material. Finally four basin types bearing carbonaceous rocks are discussed with respect to their economic potential and compared with basins elsewhere (Cerilly, Lodève, St. Hippolyte, Uinta): type I: intramontane fault-bounded basin (swamp), type II: volcanic-depression with steep relief (swamps), type III: halfgraben (lake), type IV: volcanic-depression with smooth relief (lake). Types I and II are of interest for hard coal, organic-hosted U-deposits and mainly gasprone; types III and IV, however, show good source-rock potential for crude oil. 相似文献

We report on the use of X-ray diffractometry under controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity (RH-XRD) for
the investigation of NaCl deliquescence in the pore space of glass filter frits, which were used as model substrates. The
study confirms that RH-XRD is an appropriate experimental technique for the in situ observation of phase transformation in
porous materials. It is used for an investigation of both the deliquescence kinetics and the deliquescence humidity within
pores of different median pore diameter. Several major influences affecting deliquescence rates in the pore space close to
the surface of a porous material are discussed. It appears that quite short-term variation of ambient relative humidity, e.g.,
typical daily fluctuations, might induce damaging deliquescence–crystallization cycles within the pore space of building materials.
In agreement with theoretical considerations it was found that confinement of NaCl crystals in pores with median diameters
in the range 1.4–70 μm does not affect the deliquescence humidity of the salt. 相似文献
