The inner coronal continuum has been observed and measured below 2220 on the slitless spectra obtained by Speer et al. (1970) at the 7 March 1970 eclipse. These observations set some constraints on the brightness of the inner F corona and hence on the scattering efficiency of the inner interplanetary dust cloud particles in the far ultraviolet. They neither confirm nor reject the possibility that the inner dust cloud has the same sharp upturn in scattering efficiency below 2000 observed in the zodiacal light and in the interstellar medium.On leave from Imperial College, London.This work was supported in part by NASA grant NGL 12-001-011. Summary A three-dimensional non-hydrostatic numerical model and lagrangian particle model (random walk model) were used to investigate the effects of the atmospheric circulation and boundary layer structure on the dispersion of suspended particulates in the Seoul metropolitan area. Initially, emitted particulate matter rises from the surface of the city towards the top of the convective boundary layer (CBL), owing to daytime thermal heating of the surface and the combined effect of an onshore wind with a westerly synoptic-scale wind. A reinforcing sea-valley breeze directed from the coast toward the city of Seoul, which is enclosed in a basin and bordered by mountains to its east, disperses the suspended particulate matter toward the eastern mountains. Total suspended particulate concentration (TSP) at ground level in the city is very low and relatively high in the mountains. Radiative cooling of the surface produces a shallow nocturnal surface inversion layer (NSIL) and the suspended particulate matter still present near the top of the CBL from the previous day, sinks to the surface. An easterly downslope mountain wind is directed into the metropolitan area, transporting particulate matter towards the city, thereby recycling the pollutants. The particulates descending from the top of the NSIL and mountains, combine with particulates emitted near the surface over the city at night, and under the shallow NSIL spread out, resulting in a maximum ground level concentration of TSP in the metropolitan area at 2300 LST. As those particles move toward the Yellow Sea through the topographically shaped outlet west of Seoul city under the influence of the easterly land breeze, the maximum TSP concentration occurs at the coastal site. During the following morning, onshore winds resulting from a combined synoptic-scale westerly wind and westerly sea breeze, force particulates dispersed the previous night to move over the adjacent sea and back over the inland metropolitan area. The recycled particulates combine with the particulates emitted from the surface in the central part of the metropolitan area, producing a high TSP and again rise towards the top of the CBL ready to repeat the cycle.  相似文献

In 2013, Fresno, California was home to more than 5,000 homeless people, many of whom took refuge in sprawling downtown encampments. Citing unsanitary conditions, Fresno officials implemented a policy of bulldozing the encampments while providing housing vouchers to a small number of residents. Yet homeless Fresnans by and large demanded the provision of sanitation in the encampments as an alternative to eviction. In doing so, they invoked their right to urban infrastructure. Drawing from literature on informal housing in the Global South, this paper argues that individual housing rights present a limited framework through which to understand homeless people’s right to the city, and that a truly radical right to the city should reflect the demand for sanitation infrastructure emerging from the streets.  相似文献

This paper examines the recent economic turmoil in East Asia which has been linked to the convulsive nature of global capital movements. East Asia, once the site of rapid capital accumulation, lost its economic momentum beginning in July 1997 with a series of currency devaluations, culminating in a net outflow of private capital within a year. International capital's ability to disembed the region, however, has been highly uneven over space. That China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan are far more territorially resilient while others like Indonesia, Thailand, and South Korea initiated major political changes suggests that the geography of crisis is far more complex than is currently presented.  相似文献

Obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States. Walkable neighborhoods, characterized as having the three Ds of walkability (population Density, land use Diversity, and pedestrian-friendly Design), have been identified as a potentially promising factor to prevent obesity for residents. Past studies examining the relationship between obesity and walkability vary in geographic scales of neighborhood definitions and methods of measuring the three Ds. To better understand potential influences of these sometimes arbitrary choices, we test how four types of alternative measures of land use diversity measured at three geographic scales relate to body mass index for 4,960 Salt Lake County adults. Generalized estimation equation models demonstrate that optimal diversity measures differed by gender and geographic scale and that integrating walkability measures at different scales improved the overall performance of models.  相似文献

Rainfall on the subtropical east coast of Australia has declined at up to 50?mm per decade since 1970. Wavelet analysis is used to investigate eight station and four station-averaged rainfall distributions along Australia??s subtropical east coast with respect to the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the inter-decadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) and the southern annular mode (SAM). The relationships are examined further using composite atmospheric circulation anomalies. Here we show that the greatest rainfall variability occurs in the 15?C30?year periodicity of the 1948?C1975 or ??cool?? phase of the IPO when the subtropical ridge is located sufficiently poleward for anomalous moist onshore airflow to occur together with high ENSO rainfall variability and high, negative phase, SAM variability. Thus, the mid-latitude westerlies are located at their most equatorward position in the Australian region. This maximizes tropospheric interaction of warm, moist tropical air with enhanced local baroclinicity over the east coast, and hence rainfall.  相似文献

This work presents results from a nearly two-year monitoring of the hydrologic dynamics of the largest submarine spring system in Florida, Spring Creek Springs. During the summer of 2007 this spring system was observed to have significantly reduced flow due to persistent drought conditions. Our examination of the springs revealed that the salinity of the springs' waters had increased significantly, from 4 in 2004 to 33 in July 2007 with anomalous high radon (222Rn, t1/2=3.8 days) in surface water concentrations indicating substantial saltwater intrusion into the local aquifer. During our investigation from August 2007 to May 2009 we deployed on an almost monthly basis a continuous radon-in-water measurement system and monitored the salinity fluctuations in the discharge area. To evaluate the springs' freshwater flux we developed three different models: two of them are based on water velocity measurements and either salinity or 222Rn in the associated surface waters as groundwater tracers. The third approach used only salinity changes within the spring area. The three models showed good agreement and the results confirmed that the hydrologic regime of the system is strongly correlated to local precipitation and water table fluctuations with higher discharges after major rain events and very low, even reverse flow during prolong droughts. High flow spring conditions were observed twice during our study, in the early spring and mid-late summer of 2008. However the freshwater spring flux during our observation period never reached that reported from a 1970s value of 4.9×106 m3/day. The maximum spring flow was estimated at about 3.0×106 m3/day after heavy precipitation in February-March 2008. As a result of this storm (total of 173 mm) the salinity in the spring area dropped from about 27 to 2 in only two days. The radon-in-water concentrations dramatically increased in parallel, from about 330 Bq/m3 to about 6600 Bq/m3. Such a rapid response suggests a direct connection between the deep and the surficial aquifers.  相似文献

The offshore tide becomes strongly distorted as it propagates into shallow estuarine systems. Observations of sea surface elevation and horizontal currents over periods ranging from three days to one year, at nine stations within Nauset inlet/estuary, document the non-linear interaction of the off-shore equilibrium tidal constituents. Despite strong frictional attenuation within the estuary, the overtides and compound tides of M2, S2 and N2, in particular, reach significant amplitude, resulting in strong tidal distortion. High frequency forced constituents in sea surface are phase-locked, consistently leading the forcing tides by 60–70°, resulting in a persistent distortion where falling tide is longer than rising tide. Forced constituents in currents are more nearly in phase with equilibrium constituents, producing flood currents which are shorter but more intense than ebb currents. A compound fortnightly tide, MSf, modulates the mean water level such that lowest tides occur during neap phase instead of spring phase. This fortnightly tide can be contaminated by storm surge, changing the phase characteristics of this constituent. Implications of the overtides, compound tides, and lower frequency tides on near-bed, suspended and dissolved material transport are profound.  相似文献

Area averaged mixing is inferred from the difference between cross-isopycnal advection and air-sea forcing, using a density budget in isopycnal layers. The results suggest that mixing is weak (indistinguishable from zero) in the thermocline in qualitative agreement with local and regional measurements. Mixing increases in warmer density classes, but becomes indeterminate at low densities, where climatological flux errors are largest. At high density, mixing reappears owing to the heat flux required to balance the formation of dense water and reflects mixing with intermediate and bottom water.  相似文献

Summary Several problems associated with capturing the effects of bushfires on hydrological processes in the Goulburn River catchment (6810km2), Hunter Valley, Australia are investigated using a paired-catchment analysis. It is suggested, first, that the within-year-missing data, as defined in this paper, need to be examined carefully when using the double-mass curve of annual total discharge in a paired-catchment analysis. Second, in order to provide an accurate precipitation background, which is one of the most important prerequisites for a paired-catchment analysis, the use of annual average precipitation is strongly recommended together with annual total precipitation when there are large amounts of within-year-missing data. Third, caution is needed in comparing multi-year average precipitation and streamflow data before and after the fire when the data series is not statistically long enough, since the average values for precipitation and streamflow over a different number of years may produce completely contrasting results. Fourth, the analysis of the flow duration curve, which is another useful technique in paired-catchment analysis, needs to be interpreted from the precipitation duration curve. This is because the change of flow duration curve can be caused either from the change of precipitation or the fire. Fifth, the change in streamflow, calculated by subtracting the average streamflow for the non-fire years from the observed streamflow for the years in which fires occurred, is not an efficient way of capturing the fire effects. The problem associated with this approach is not just that the streamflow is strongly dependent on rainfall, as reported elsewhere, but also, it can lead to misinterpretation using the hydrograph when the average streamflow in non-fire years is close to the average streamflow in fire years.By taking into account the above problems there was no effect of fires found on streamflow in the Goulburn River catchment. This result contrasts with the conclusions reported from other studies that have reported an immediate increase in streamflow by experimental analyses, paired-catchment analyses or modelling studies. Instead, it is shown that the spatial pattern of precipitation over the Goulburn River catchment is more important in shaping the hydrograph than the effects of bushfires. The ratio of fire extent to catchment area is approximately 4% in this study, which we suggest is a minimum area required to identify a hydrological response to the fires. The fact that other studies have focused more on capturing the generally expected effect of an immediate increase in streamflow after fire, than on why this effect occurs, makes it highly desirable to undertake micro-meteorological experiments to obtain observed evapotranspiration data before and after fire. Also, it is important to develop a coupled soil-vegetation-atmosphere-transfer dynamic mechanism and high resolution numerical weather prediction model with a distributed hydrological model in order to simulate more realistically the effect of fire on hydrological processes.  相似文献
