The study covered by this paper was focused on the historical case of the Calitri landslide, which was repeatedly reactivated by earthquakes, as reported since 1694. The town of Calitri (Southern Italy) is located on a ridge whose southern slope, from its top to the Ofanto river valley floor, has been historically affected by major landsliding. The last record of recurrence of the Calitri landslide leads back to the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, which caused significant damage to the town and had pervasive and visible ground effects. Based on a detailed historical reconstruction of landsliding and seismicity at Calitri, the study analysed the current static and dynamic stability of the landsliding slope by means of a finite-difference numerical analysis, taking into account the various factors of landslide initiation and kinematics. The results of the numerical analysis: (i) were consistent with the roto-translational mechanism observed upon the latest reactivation of the landslide; (ii) demonstrated that excess pore pressure redistribution caused a lag between the seismic trigger and the initiation of landsliding; and (iii) showed the impact of seismic input frequency on propagation and depth of slope instability.  相似文献

This paper presents a probabilistic methodology for the analysis of the vulnerability of a ship to the risk of inception of pure loss of stability events. A pure loss of stability failure is modelled as the persistence of the metacentric height below a critical level for a too long time. The metacentric height is modelled as a stationary Gaussian process with a spectrum obtained from the sea elevation spectrum. The time dependent failure index is obtained under the assumption of filtered Poisson process for the occurrence of critical events. The analysis separates cases where the fluctuation of the metacentric height is narrow-band from those where the bandwidth of the spectrum is wide, with an intermediate blending. In case of narrow-band processes appropriate approximate solutions to the problem are provided, while in the wide-band cases an exponential distribution for the persistence time below the critical level is employed. A rational development for the critical persistence time is also provided considering an approximation of the roll dynamics during periods of time where the metacentric height is negative. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to check the developed approximate distributions for the persistence time, and examples of application are provided for a sample ship.  相似文献

Analytical methods used for determining dissolved Fe(II) often yield inaccurate results in the presence of high Fe(III) concentrations. Accurate analysis of Fe(II) in solution when it is less than 1% of the total dissolved Fe concentration (FeT) is sometimes required in both geochemical and environmental studies. For example, such analysis is imperative for obtaining the ratio Fe(II)/Fe(III) in rocks, soils and sediments, for determining the kinetic constants of Fe(II) oxidation in chemical or biochemical systems operating at low pH, and is also important in environmental engineering projects, e.g. for proper control of the regeneration step (oxidation of Fe(II) into Fe(III)) applied in ferric-based gas desulphurization processes. In this work a method capable of yielding accurate Fe(II) concentrations at Fe(II) to FeT ratios as low as 0.05% is presented. The method is based on a pretreatment procedure designed to separate Fe(II) species from Fe(III) species in solution without changing the original Fe(II) concentration. Once separated, a modified phenanthroline method is used to determine the Fe(II) concentration, in the virtual absence of Fe(III) species. The pretreatment procedure consists of pH elevation to pH 4.2–4.65 using NaHCO3 under N2(g) environment, followed by filtration of the solid ferric oxides formed, and subsequent acidification of the Fe(II)-containing filtrate. Accuracy of Fe(II) analyses obtained for samples (Fe(II)/FeT ratios between 2% and 0.05%) to which the described pretreatment was applied was >95%. Elevating pH to above 4.65 during pretreatment was shown to result in a higher error in Fe(II) determination, likely resulting from adsorption of Fe(II) species and their removal from solution with the ferric oxide precipitate.  相似文献

Computations of storm surges during the 20th century needs to incorporate globalwarming of about 0.6 °C ± 0.2 °C (IPCC, 2001). In order totake this global warming into consideration, the development of all storm surgesoccurred during the 20th century have been analysed. The study comprises determiningto what degree the storm surge curve and storm surge level depend on each other. Thisfact can be used to calculate a maximum storm surge curve and each single storm surgeevent can be summarised. The tendency of the surge and wind parameters do not showthat this maximum storm surge levels in the 20th century will occur earlier than predicted, however, the global warming of 0.6 °C will extend the duration of the mean storm surge curve.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic pollutants that can significantly affect ecosystems and exert an influence on marine planktonic and benthic communities as well as on higher organisms such as fish and mammals, including humans. In this paper the concentrations of six PAHs in water, seston and copepods were examined in a harbour zone of the Genova Gulf (Ligurian Sea) from November 1997 to June 1998. The importance of freshwater inputs coming from a polluted stream and the influence of seasonal and atmospheric factors were also considered. Highest PAH values were recorded during spring. Fluoranthene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene and Benzo[k]fluoranthene were the most abundant PAHs either in water, seston or copepods. The concentration of total PAHs in seawater was often lower than the detection limit: recorded values ranged between 0.001 and 0.06 ppb. In seston, total PAHs ranged between 0.033 and 6.26 ng·g?1 and in copepods between 0.01 and 2.34 ng·g?1. With this study, PAH contamination in the harbour zone of Genova Sestri‐Ponente and the importance of inputs of organic pollutants coming from land and freshwaters have been emphasized.  相似文献
