The effects of multiple stressors on the benthic macroinvertebrate community were monitored in Tecuitlapa Norte, a shallow,
perennially-astatic, warm, mesosaline, sodaalkaline lake in Mexico. Physico-chemical and biological variables were determined
monthly for one year. Tecuitlapa Norte displayed a clear seasonal environmental pattern (dry and rainy seasons). The benthic
macroinvertebrate community consisted of five species:Culicoides occidentalis sonorensis Jorgensen,Ephydra hians Say,Stratiomys sp.,Eristalis sp., andLimnophora sp. of which the first two were dominant and the rest scarce.C. occidentalis was the most important species numerically (76 percent of the total), whileE. hians dominated the biomass (73 percent of the total). Primarily salinity and secondarily pH appear to be the most important environmental
factors controlling dominance of benthic organisms in Tecuitlapa Norte. Seasonal abundance dynamics of the dominant organisms
was associated with phases in their reproductive cycles: environmentally-triggered (i.e., temperature rise, water-level descent)
pupation and emergence periods. We concluded that whereas physical and chemical factors (i.e., salinity, pH) exerted the primary
control on benthic macroinvertebrate community composition in Tecuitlapa Norte, another assembly of variables (e.g., water-level,
temperature) influenced species distribution and abundance. 相似文献

The Little Ice Age (LIA), AD 1350–1850, represents one of the most recent, persistent global climate oscillations. In Mexico, it has been associated with temperature decreases of 1.5–2 °C and mountain glacier advances, which are not accurately dated. We present new information about the nature of the LIA in central Mexico based on a decadal-resolution sediment sequence from high-altitude, tropical Lake La Luna, in the Nevado de Toluca volcano. We inferred past climatic and environmental changes using magnetic susceptibility, charcoal particles, palynomorphs, diatoms, cladoceran remains and multivariate statistics. The onset of the LIA corresponds with the beginning of a long-term trend to colder and drier climate ca. AD 1360–1910. The coolest and driest episode, ~AD 1660–1760, which corresponds with the Maunder Minimum in solar activity, was characterized by a cladoceran assemblage that showed the greatest dissimilarity to the modern one (no modern analogue), with the presence of cold-water species and Daphnia ephippia. The beginning of a warming trend ca. AD 1760, was identified by a diatom assemblage dominated by species with affinities for higher pH values (>6) and the greatest dissimilarity to the modern assemblage. This less cold, but still dry period, corresponds with historical reports of cattle and crop losses that predated the Mexican wars of Independence (AD 1810–1821) and Revolution (1910–1924). Modern conditions, established around AD 1910, resemble those during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (ca. AD 1200). No clear evidence of modern, human-induced environmental change was recorded, indicating that Lake La Luna is an ideal site in Mexico to monitor future impacts of global change. 相似文献

Shaking tables are suitable facilities to assess and validate the behavior of structures and nonstructural components under actual seismic actions. Because of the size and weight limitations of the tables, some approaches, like testing reduced‐scale models or testing only the main structural components, are deemed necessary. In these cases, to comply with modeling requirements, large amount of extra‐mass should be added to the specimen. Therefore, to avoid the risk of lateral instability of models, to maintain the weight of test specimens within table payload, while maintaining the amount of mass needed, an external device for transmitting the inertia forces to the models using an improved sliding system is proposed. Although friction devices for similar purposes have been developed using sliding bearings (Teflon pads or rollers), the measured coefficient of dynamic friction and the energy dissipated by friction have been very high. In order to drastically diminish the damping added to the specimen response when a friction device is used, the improved device employs a linear motion guide system (LMGS) with very low friction. Shaking table tests to collapse of reinforced concrete walls were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed device. Measured dynamic friction coefficients, spectral accelerations and hysteresis loops show that friction developed in the LMGS did not add any significant amount of damping into the specimen response. Thus, the proposed device is a reliable and suitable mass‐carrying sliding system (MCSS) for dynamic testing using medium‐size shaking tables. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Acceptance limits of the structural response of walls for low‐rise concrete housing were developed. Proposed values are applicable within a performance‐based seismic design framework. Acceptance limits are based on performance indicators of structural response–allowable story drift ratios, width of residual cracks and residual damage index, and expected damage of walls. Cracking limits were defined from parameters obtained at the unloading stage of walls (i.e., residual cracking stage). The residual cracking stage may be used for structural damage evaluation and cost estimation of structural rehabilitation after an earthquake has occurred. The performance indicators proposed herein were derived from test observations and measured response of 39 RC walls' specimens during shaking table and quasistatic testing, as well as from limiting values and results of previous studies. The dustfall (DF) and mass sedimentation rate (MSR) in Lake Alchichica, Central Mexico, were studied from June 2006 to June 2008. DF ranged between 0·11–0·93 g m?2 d?1 in the warm and rainy season and 0·54–1·21 g m?2 d?1 in the cold and dry season. MSR varied from 0·52–2·40 g m?2 d?1 in the stratification season to 1·14–5·07 g m?2 d?1 in the circulation season. The timing of the highest fluxes of DF and MSR is most likely a product of several factors coinciding during the cold and dry season: (a) availability of dust sources and the presence of strong winds (>7·5 m s?1) in the DF case, and (b) the circulation period of the lake and the availability of nutrients in the MSR case. As expected, the DF in Alchichica was high and similar to that found in other arid and semi‐arid areas. However, the MSR was higher than that reported for other oligotrophic lakes. Particles captured in the aerial traps consisted mainly of detrital minerals; in contrast, particles found in the water traps were mostly biogenic and, to a lesser extent, detrital minerals. The MSR was one to seven times higher than the DF. In spite of the oligotrophic status of Lake Alchichica, the large size of the settled phytoplankton (autochthonous, waterborne) is what leads to the high MSR, which surpasses the DF (allochthonous, airborne) derived from whirlwinds originating in easily eroded terrains that are characteristic of arid/semi‐arid areas. Our results indicate that caution must be taken in considering that the DF amount measured through DF collectors located at the lake shore does actually represent the DF entering into the lake. Experimental evidence supporting the fact that results from quasi‐static (QS) test of low‐rise reinforced concrete walls may be safely assumed as a lower limit of strength and displacement, and energy dissipation capacities are still scarce. The aim of this paper is to compare the seismic performance of 12 reinforced concrete walls for low‐rise housing: six prototype walls tested under QS‐cyclic loading and six models tested under shaking table excitations. Variables studied were wall geometry, type of concrete, web steel ratio, type of web reinforcement and testing method. Comparison of results from dynamic and QS‐cyclic tests indicated that stiffness and strength properties were dependent on the loading rate, the strength mechanisms associated with the failure mode, the low‐cycle fatigue, and the cumulative parameters, such as displacement demand and energy dissipated. Historical and recent changes in the nature of Lake Texcoco, a saline lake in Mexico, are described. These changes are particularly important since they significantly affect water supply, drainage and other urban issues in Mexico City, Mexico's largest city and capital located within the general boundaries of the lake basin and gradually sinking (mean annual sinking rate is 30 cm). After brief reviews of the present status of the lake and background geological, palaeolimnological and climatic features, human activities during historical and recent times are considered. Of particular note have been drainage basin activities, diversion of inflows, pollution and over-exploitation of groundwater and biological resources (especially fish and waterfowl). The major effects of these activities are water shortages, soil erosion, salinization, dust storms, sinking ground, poor water quality and decreased biological resources. Conservation measures are discussed. 相似文献

Two saline crater lakes in the basin of Oriental, Puebla-Tlaxcala-Veracruz, were investigated for littoral benthic macroinvertebrates.
Fifty taxa were identified with the oligochaetes, amphipods, chironomids and leeches the dominant organisms. These four taxa
made up to 99 per cent in both number and biomass.Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Hyalella azteca, Tanypus (Apelopia) sp. andStictochironomus sp. were the most abundant organisms. Unlike other saline lakes which have a littoral benthos dominated by chironomids, Alchichica
and Atexcac were dominated by oligochaetes (70–73 per cent). The gastropod,Physa sp., was found up to a salinity of 8 g L−1; in other studies, it has been found in lower salinities.L. hoffmeisteri is also a typical inhabitant of freshwater lakes, particularly of deep waters. It was dominant in the shallow, saline waters
of the two lakes studied. Salinity did not affect species richness. Alchichica, the most saline of the six crater lakes of
Puebla (salinity, 7.4 g L−1), had 30 per cent more species than the freshwater lakes, and double the species number of Atexcac. It seems the main factor
controlling species richness and the density and biomass of organisms in Alchichica and Atexcac is the presence of aquatic
vegetation. It does this by increasing habitat heterogeneity and providing food and protection against predators. 相似文献

Waters from five cenotes that are currently being used for aquatic recreational activities and that lie along the Cancun–Tulum
touristic corridor, Mexico, were evaluated hydrochemically to determine whether the cenotes may be considered as potential
drinking-water sources. Several parameters exceed the Mexican Drinking Water Standards (MDWS), but since they do not pose
a significant health threat, four of the five cenotes may be used as drinking-water sources. The common contaminants in the
Yucatan Peninsula, fecal coliforms and nitrate, are in most cases below the MDWS (0–460 MPN/100 ml and 0.31–1.18 mg/L, respectively).
Although these four cenotes meet the MDWS, a careful groundwater management policy needs to be developed to avoid contamination
(fecal and nitrates) and salt-water intrusion.
