Samples were collected at stations located in the mesohaline, oligohaline, and tidal fresh regions of the Potomac River, Maryland,
between April 1998 and December 1999 to evaluate the seasonal distribution of bacterioplankton and microbially labile organic
carbon (MLOC) in relation to hydrodynamic parameters (dissolved oxygen, salinity, and temperature). Bacterioplankton abundance
(BA) averaged 13 × 106 cells ml−1 at all stations, a value that is higher than the average observed in many other temperate estuaries around the world, and
were almost exclusively free-living. During the summer of 1998, BA often exceeded 30 × 106 cells ml−1 in the mesohaline region during periods of anoxia in subpycnocline waters. Dissolved MLOC typically accounted for 40% of
total MLOC and on some occasions during summer and autumn accounted for 80%. A significant positive relationship between dissolved
MLOC and BA was evident in the mesohaline Potomac River, the region where anoxia occurs each summer, but the regressions of
particulate MLOC and chla on BA were not significant at this location. In the mesohaline Potomac River, BA regressed negatively and significantly on
dissolved oxygen (r2=0.50, p<0.001). BA may be an important indicator of ecosystem health in this and other eutrophied estuaries, because of the
relationships between BA, dissolved MLOC, and dissolved oxygen in the salinity stratified Potomac River and because free-living
BA was elevated along the length of the river. 相似文献

The rapid growth of Riyadh—capital of Saudi Arabia—is pushing the area to more pollution and incentive for reorganization. The aim of this research is to assess air pollutants in southeast of Riyadh and detect opinion of the population about their environment. The assessment was done by analyzing 405 questionnaires, evaluating thermal band of Landsat 8, and spatial analyzing of particular matter and chemicals in 19 air samples by geostatistical tool in the ArcMap. Most of the inhabitants stated that they are suffering from bad odor, sewage leakage, and dust mainly from a cement factory. The thermal band of Landsat clarified the location of the pollution sources mainly the 1st industrial city, Yammama Cement Factory, and power plant in Farouq area. The ordinary kriging maps showed that the highest concentration of PM10 (>403 μg/m3) lied to the northern and western side of the study area and caused a health issue to most inhabitants. 相似文献

Siliyin spring is one of the many natural fresh water springs in the Western Desert of Egypt. It is located at the central
part of El-Fayoum Delta, which is a potential place for urban developments and touristic activities. Integrated geoelectrical
survey was conducted to facilitate mapping the groundwater resources and the shallow subsurface structures in the area. Twenty-eight
transient electromagnetic (TEM) soundings, three vertical electrical soundings (VES) and three electrical resistivity tomography
(ERT) profiles were carried out around the Siliyin spring location. The dense cultivation, the rugged topography and the existence
of infra structure in the area hindered acquiring more data. The TEM data were inverted jointly with the VES and ERT, and
constrained by available geological information. Based on the inversion results, a set of geoelectrical cross-sections have
been constructed. The shallow sand to sandy clay layer that forms the shallow aquifer has been completely mapped underneath
and around the spring area. Flowing of water from the Siliyin spring is interconnected with the lateral lithological changes
from clay to sand soil. Exploration of the extension of Siliyin spring zone is recommended. The interpretation emphasizes
the importance of integrating the geoelectrical survey with the available geological information to obtain useful, cheap and
fast lithological and structural subsurface information. 相似文献

In this paper, the application of 2D and 3D electrical resistivity methods in geotechnical investigations is explored through a case study in Northern Greece. These two methods were employed at a lignite surface mining operation where fracture zones and discontinuities have been recently observed close to the pit boundaries. The main aim of the geophysical survey was to estimate the inclination of the contact between the Neogene and Schist/Carbonate formations near the southern limits of the pit, as well as to estimate the thickness of the carbonate rocks on top of the Schist formations to evaluate the stability of the southern slopes. Synthetic data were initially generated to help plan an efficient electrical tomography survey, in a region with complex geology and irregular terrain. Three configurations (Wenner–Schlumberger and dipole–dipole or pole–dipole) proved essential in such conditions and helped improving the resolution of the resistivity section. The sections were then calibrated by boreholes. Finally, the geophysical survey provided invaluable data regarding the geometry of the bedrock and possible faults, which was essential for the slope stability calculations. 相似文献

Concentrated flow is often the dominant source of water erosion following disturbance on rangelands. Because of the lack of studies that explain the hydraulics of concentrated flow on rangelands, cropland‐based equations have typically been used for rangeland hydrology and erosion modeling, leading to less accurate predictions due to different soil and vegetation cover characteristics. This study investigates the hydraulics of concentrated flow using unconfined field experimental data over diverse rangeland landscapes within the Great Basin Region, United States. The results imply that the overall hydraulics of concentrated flow on rangelands differ significantly from those of cropland rills. Concentrated flow hydraulics on rangelands are largely controlled by the amount of cover or bare soil and hillslope angle. New predictive equations for concentrated flow velocity (R2 = 0·47), hydraulic friction (R2 = 0·52), and width (R2 = 0·4) representing a diverse set of rangeland environments were developed. The resulting equations are applicable across a wide span of ecological sites, soils, slopes, and vegetation and ground cover conditions and can be used by physically‐based rangeland hydrology and erosion models to estimate rangeland concentrated flow hydraulic parameters. Published in 2011. This article is a US Government work and is in the public domain in the USA. 相似文献

The current study aimed to evaluate hydrogeologically the Nubian sandstone aquifer in El-Bahariya Oasis. It represents the main water-bearing horizon in the study area and consists of continental elastic sediments, mainly sandstone alternating with shale and clays. The general flow lines are directed from SW to NE direction, as detected from the constructed potentiometric head contour map. The piezometric surface reaches 149 m in El-Heiz area at the southern part, while it reaches 90 m at the northern, reflecting higher pressure head of the aquifer in the southern part. The map also illustrates that the southern part is considered as the most promising location for development. The structural elements play an important role in the deposition and distribution of the sedimentary succession of the Nubian sandstone sediments. Consequently, this sedimentary pattern affects the occurrences and movements of the groundwater within the aquifer system. Along the structurally high areas, in the study area, the piezometric head increases, while the reverse is recorded along the structurally low areas. The step-drawdown tests data were carried out by calculating the aquifer loss coefficient (B) and the well loss constant (C). The B values are smaller compared with C values, indicating that the aquifer under pressure has a behavior of leaky aquifer; therefore, it shows hydraulic connection with surrounding formation. The values of well efficiency range from 78.50% to 87.76%. Analysis of 12 pumping test data (constant discharge tests) was carried out in order to calculate the Nubian aquifer hydraulic parameters (transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and storage coefficient). The transmissivity values decrease from 3,045 m2/day in the southern part (El-Heiz area) to 236 m2/day in the northeastern part (El-Harra area). Accordingly, the aquifer classified as a high to moderate potentiality. Transmissivity contour map observes gradual increase of transmissivity values from the southern to northeastern direction. This may be due to the increase of shale or clay content in the concerned aquifer in that direction. The storage coefficient values range between 1.04 × 10?4 and 5.22 × 10?3, as obtained from the results of pumping test analysis, which ensure that the Nubian sandstone aquifer is classified as semi-confined to confined aquifer type. The S values show a decrease from southwest to northeast direction as detected from S-map. The hydraulic conductivity values vary from to 0.46 m/day in the northern part to 10.88 m/day in the southern part with an average of 5.67 m/day. According to the classification based on K values, the aquifer is mainly composed of coarse sand. 相似文献

We propose a general stochastic model for the UT1/LOD system and derive the corresponding Kalman filter model. This stochastic model consists of an arbitrary sum of continous time autoregressive moving average (ARMA) processes, each chosen to characterize a different frequency band. The transition matrix which corresponds to the overall system and the time-dependent process noise covariance matrix are derived.Based on the general formulation, several models for UT1 were derived from spectral analysis of the Space 92 UT1 series (Gross,1993). Using Space 92 as the reference series, the candidate models were compared based on their ability to predict UT1 and LOD up to 30 days in the absence of data. These candidate models were compared with the JPL operational Kalman Earth Orientation Filter (KEOF) which assumes a random walk model for LOD (Morabito et al.,1987). The results of the comparison revealed that autoregressive modeling the 40–50 day oscillation in the LOD reduces the LOD prediction error by 10prediction. 相似文献
