Grains ejected from stars at velocities of 107 cm s–1 and/or grains accelerated by the pressure of starlight in the intercloud medium to velocities in the range 2×106–107 cm s–1 are slowed to velocities of about 2×105 cm s–1 in a typical interstellar cloud. The interaction of fast grains with gas atoms as they are slowed in clouds could provide (a) the dominant heat source for interstellar clouds; (b) sites for molecule formation; and (c) a mechanism of providing a pressure balance between clouds and the intercloud medium.Paper presented at the Symposium on Solid State Astrophysics, held at the University College, Cardiff, Wales, between 9–12 July, 1974.  相似文献

A model is suggested to simulate the physical aspect of diagenesis in porous rocks. A bidisperse ballistic deposition model with relaxation of deposited grains is used to generate the porous structure. Sedimentation and erosion are allowed to restructure the pore space as a fluid flows through the rock. The effect of this restructuring of the pore space on permeability is studied. The Navier–Stokes equation is solved numerically by the finite difference method to determine the pressure and velocity distributions in the pore space. We find that though deposition is the dominant process in our model of diagenesis, reducing the porosity, the permeability may increase dramatically in some cases. These are when the erosion takes place at a single narrow constriction in the pore channel.  相似文献

It is sometimes suggested that the change from the horizontal to the normal branch in the X-ray intensity-hardness ratio diagram of low mass X-ray binaries, is due to a change from a thin to a thick disk. It is shown here that wind from the hot thick disk depletes the amount of matter reaching the neutron star, thus causing the observed reduction of X-ray intensity as hardness ratio decreases in the normal branch.  相似文献

We show here that the Hα flux from late type Be stars can be explained as emission from an HII region formed in the gas envelope around the Be star, by the UV flux emitted by a helium star binary companion. We also discuss the observability of the helium star companions.  相似文献

We have made an analysis of the observed equivalent widths of the lines of Lyman and Werner bands by Smith. The H2 column densities of 3×1019 to 1020 and the excitation temperature of 80 to 150 K satisfy the observations. This temperature refers to the kinetic temperature. We have also discussed the importance of getting the excitation temperature from lines of H2 and other heteronuclear diatomic molecules for the same star and from different regions of space.  相似文献

Water scarcity is becoming a major problem in High Mountain Basins of Indian Himalaya. Access to fresh water becomes a core concern for every dweller in the summer season all across the Indian Himalayan Region. This paper presents an assessment of two low yielding perennial springs in one of the urban center located in the very steep mountain slopes of Lesser Himalaya. Spring hydrographs were analyzed to investigate the variability and availability of spring flow in three seasons. Dynamic spring flow volume in storage and time at which the flow may cease were also assessed, as they play a crucial role for planning short-term measures. The linear model using the exponential decay equation is found to be sufficiently accurate to model the recession characteristics of spring outflow from the hardrock aquifers for winter season, as the main contribution comes from baseflow with delayed interflow, which is slow diffuse flow in nature. The present study examines the findings from 1 year of spring outflow and rainfall when deficient monsoonal rainfall (moderate drought) is recorded in major parts of the country. The data can play a significant role in estimating dependable minimum water availability from the spring outflow and planning for appropriate capacity of low to medium storage structure for conserving the excess water which goes unutilized even during the high scarcity period. The analysis of duration curve suggests, more focus should be given for conserving the surplus water available during the monsoon through appropriate storage structures, which can be used during the leanest month.  相似文献

Populations of the rotational levels of vibrational and electronic ground state of interstellar HD and CO have been calculated. Ultraviolet pumping and molecular formation have been found to be very important in the case of HD but not so in CO, the population distribution of which is mainly governed either by 3 K or by collisional excitation. The population inversion has been found to occur in HD but not in CO, the excitation temperatures of which pass through maximum for large ultraviolet flux. The population inversion at large density does not occur in HD, probably due to neglect of multipole collision. The observation of HD and CO in the excited states may be possible for suitable values of density and ultraviolet flux.On leave from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, India.  相似文献

The observed infrared excess in Be stars is usually interpreted as free-free and free-bound emission from a hot gas envelope around the Be star. This hot gas should also emit H-alpha line radiation. Earlier observations had suggested that the infrared excess and Hα radiation were not consistent with models in which they arise from the same ionized region; however the observations were made at different times. We have made simultaneous observation of infrared and H-alpha line radiation. Our observations imply that either both these radiations cannot arise from the same hot gas or additional processes have to be invoked to account for the observed excess infrared radiation.  相似文献

Be stars show both emission and absorption profiles in the optical part of the spectrum, and these are found to vary with the time. Some of the shifts in profiles were earlier interpreted as Doppler shifts. However, some of the shifts of features in both emission and absorption line profiles may be artifacts due to superposition of an emission profile arising from an Hii region around a binary compact object, and a profile due to the Be star. This interpretation of shifts in line profiles has the advantage over the conventional Doppler-shift interpretation in so far as it does not need the oscillation of a large mass of circumstellar gas, and leads to the observed correlation between radial velocity (RV) variations and V/R variations.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to present the correlation of seasonal variation of 5893 Å line intensity with relative sunspot numbers, solar flare numbers and the variable component of 10.7 cm solar flux. A study has been made and the following important results have been obtained.
  1. The intensity of 5893 Å line at Calcutta shows periodic variation with different solar parameters during descending part of secondary peak of 21st solar cycle (1984–1985).
  2. 5893 Å line intensity of Mt. Abu also shows periodic variation with solar parameters during the period 1965–1968 when there was a peak phase of 20th solar cycle.
  3. A possible explanation for such type of variation is also presented.
