Ethnic results of the 1979 Soviet census

This article is based on summary results concerning ethnic composition in the USSR according to the 1979 census. "These results...have been rearranged... to reflect not only the ethnic composition of the USSR and of its republics over time (1959, 1970, 1979), but also shifts in the distribution of particular ethnic groups. Furthermore, ethnic groups are discussed in a regional sequence. In combination with the migration tables based on previous results of the 1979 census...some conclusions can be drawn concerning the ethnic makeup of migrants among republics."     

Population trends of Soviet cities, 1970-84

This article contains a time series for the population of cities of the Soviet Union for the period 1970-1984. The data are from the Soviet censuses of 1970 and 1979 and from official estimates for 1974 and 1984. The article is designed as a continuation of an earlier time series developed by Chauncy D. Harris for the period 1897-1967. "The updated material consists of a series of tables following the patterns of the earlier material, a methodological explanation, and a discussion of significant trends in the population size of Soviet cities."     

Gamma-quanta conversion into positronium atoms in a strong magnetic field

The curvature -quanta emitted in the pulsar magnetospheres tangentially to the curved lines of force of the magnetic field are shown to be later canalized along the magnetic field—if it is strong enough,B0.1B _cr =4×10¹²G—by gradually converting into a mutually bound electron-positron pair, i.e. a positronium atom. This happens before the photon reaches the threshold of free-pair creation. The positronium thus arising is stable against the ionizing action of the electric field near the pulsar unless it reaches a critical value about 4×10⁷ CGSE forB10¹³G. This prevents the screening of the electric field up to the distances from the pulsar, where the magnetic field is already below the value of 0.1B _cr and the free pair creation may become essential. This effect provides, at least within the Arons model, a higher theoretical estimate for the total luminosity of pulsars whose field at the surfaceB _s exceeds 0.1B _cr as compared with the conventional one.     

Propagation of γ-radiation in strong magnetic fields of pulsars

The propagation, decay and absorption of electromagnetic waves in magnetospheres of pulsars are considered with emphasis on the resonant effects in the vacuum polarization.     

The 1979 Census and some demographic trends in the Soviet Union

Recent demographic trends in the USSR are analyzed using preliminary 1979 census results that were published by the Soviet press in a central report issued on April 22, 1979, and in regional reports issued between April 25 and May 25, 1979. Topics discussed include regional patterns of change in the total population; urban and rural population; trends in the growth of major cities; changes in the sex ratio, particularly in urban areas; and trends in inter-regional and inter-republic migration.
