New high-resolution spectra in the 0.33 to 0.92 μm range of Iapetus, Hyperion, Phoebe, Dione, Rhea, and three D-type asteroids were obtained on the Palomar 200-inch telescope and the double spectrograph. The spectra of Hyperion and the low-albedo hemisphere of Iapetus can both be closely matched by a simple model that is the linear admixture of the spectrum of a medium-sized, high-albedo icy saturnian satellite and D-type material. Our results support an exogenous origin to the dark material on Iapetus; furthermore, this material may share a common origin and a similar means of transport with material on the surface of Hyperion. The recently discovered retrograde satellites of Saturn (Gladman et al., Nature412, 163-166) may be the source of this material. The leading sides of Callisto and the Uranian satellites may be subjected to a similar alteration mechanism as that of Iapetus: accretion of low-albedo dust originating from outer retrograde satellites. Phoebe does not appear to be related to either Iapetus or Hyperion. Separate spectra of the two hemispheres of Phoebe show no identifiable global compositional differences.  相似文献

Interference filter photometry was taken of Comet Encke on June 14, 1974 (1.07 AU heliocentric distance, postperihelion) at the CTIO (Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory) 150-cm reflector. Production rates were calculated of 4.1 × 1023 mol sec?1 of CN, 5.3 × 1023 mol sec?1 of C3, and 4.3 × 1024 mol sec?1 of C2. These are about three times smaller than at comparable heliocentric distance preperihelion, assuming a value of 100 for the ratio H2O/ (C2 + C3 + CN). An upper limit was placed on the production of nonvolatiles at about one-third that of volatiles in mass by assuming a bulk density of 1 g cm?3, a particle geometric albedo of 0.1, and a phase function of 0.2.  相似文献

Spectroscopic and infrared observations of Comet Sugano-Saigusa-Fujikawa (1983V) were obtained during its close approach to the Earth on 11-14 June 1983. The [O I] production rates of 1.8 +/- 0.9 x 10(26) atoms/s observed on 12.3 June and 7 +/- 3.5 x 10(26) atoms/s on 13.4 June lead to derived water-production rates of 3 x 10(27) mol/s on 12 June and 1.1 x 10(28) mol/s on 13 June. The abundances of the minor species NH2, CN, C2, and C3 are unusually low relative to [O I]. The upper limit to the average nuclear radius from our infrared and visual photometry on 12-13 June (assuming that the entire signal came from the nucleus) is approximately 370 m. The dust/gas mass ratio was <0.01 on June 12 and <0.005 on June 13.  相似文献
