Long-term and seasonal geomorphological changes at Padre Island, Texas are identified and linked with potential external drivers. Aerial and satellite images from 1950 to 2018, monthly images from 2019 to 2020, and a 2018 LiDAR data set are used to assess long-term and seasonal geomorphological changes within a 50 km2 area of Padre Island near Port Mansfield, Texas. Trends in landcover are evaluated by mapping and comparing the relative areal coverage of each facies. Vegetated dunes, absent initially, emerged in the fore-island and expanded into the back-barrier to cover 14% of the study area. The active vegetation-free back-barrier dune field steadily decreased in areal extent from 12% to 6% as vegetation spread. Nebkha dune coverage fluctuated between 4% and 7%. Expansive microbial mats colonized the wind tidal and deflation flats surrounding the vegetated dunes and back-barrier dune field giving rise to a remarkably different landscape over the 50-year period studied. An assessment of external forcing factors identifies increased rates of relative sea level rise and decreased sediment influx as the most likely primary factors driving the geomorphological changes. These changes have induced a widespread shift toward stabilization of island sediments by vegetation and microbial mats, which in turn has starved the back-barrier of sediments resulting in low rates of accretion and increased flooding. These findings highlight the sensitivity of the back-barrier and, in particular, the dune facies to changes in sea level and sediment supply, and show that microbial mats are effective at stabilizing island sediments and may be harbingers to barrier island response to rising sea level. As shown in this study, long-term monitoring of geomorphic facies changes and topography can detect important shifts in the island state that can be used to inform decision making for these sensitive coastal landscapes.  相似文献

According to Parker's earlier articles in this journal the photospheric temperature is lower in sunspots than elsewhere because of increased outflow of mechanical energy, rather than inhibited inflow from the convective zone. In this case the atmosphere above the spot group receives an excess supply of energy that must equal the deficiency in radiative power output of the spot group compared with the normal photosphere. The extra power supplied to the atmosphere was then assumed to be lost by radiation. On 26 November 1973 the active region McMath 12628 was studied with sufficient precision to test for this equality. It is shown that the atmosphere did not radiate and almost certainly did not receive, more than a very small part of the missing flux of the spot group. This result is an important constraint on the plausible theories of sunspot formation.  相似文献

Sorption of U(VI) on Hanford fine sand (HFS) with varying Fe-oxide (especially ferrihydrite) contents showed that U(VI) sorption increased with the incremental addition of synthetic ferrihydrite into HFS, consistent with ferrihydrite being one of the most reactive U(VI) sorbents present in natural sediments. Surface complexation model (SCM) calculations for U(VI) sorption, using only U(VI) surface-reaction constants obtained from U(VI) sorption data on freshly synthesized ferrihydrite at different pHs, were similar to the measured U(VI) sorption results on pure synthetic ferrihydrite and on HFS with high contents of ferrihydrite (5 wt%) added. However, the SCM prediction using only U(VI) sorption reactions and constants for synthetic ferrihydrite overestimated U(VI) sorption on the natural HFS or HFS with addition of low amounts of added ferrihydrite (1 wt% added). Over-predicted U(VI) sorption was attributed to reduced reactivity of natural ferrihydrite present in Hanford Site sediments, compared to freshly prepared synthetic ferrihydrite. Even though the SCM general composite (GC) approach is considered to be a semi-quantitative estimation technique for contaminant sorption, which requires systematic experimental data on the sorbent–sorbate system being studied to obtain credible SCM parameters, the general composite SCM model was still found to be a useful technique for describing U(VI) sorption on natural sediments. Based on U(VI) batch sorption results, two simple U(VI) monodentate surface species, SO_UO2HCO3 and SO_UO2OH on ferrihydrite and phyllosillicate in HFS, respectively, can be successfully used to describe U(VI) sorption onto Hanford Site sediment contacting varying geochemical solutions.  相似文献

Contaminated capillary fringe sediments are believed to function as long-term source of U(VI) to Hanford’s 300 Area groundwater uranium plume that discharges to the Columbia River. The deep vadose zone at this site experiences seasonal water table elevation and water compositional changes in response to Columbia River stage. Batch and column desorption experiments of U(VI) were performed on two mildly contaminated sediments from this system that vary in hydrologic position to ascertain their U(VI) release behavior and factors controlling it. Solid phase characterization of the sediments was performed to identify mineralogic and chemical factors controlling U(VI) desorption. Low adsorbed U(VI) concentrations prevented spectroscopic analysis. The desorption behavior of U(VI) was different for the two sediments in spite of similar chemical and textural characteristics, and non-carbonate mineralogy. Adsorption strength and sorbed U(VI) lability was higher in the near-river sediment. The inland sediment displayed low sorbed U(VI) lability (∼10%) and measurable solid-phase carbonate content. Kinetic desorption was observed that was attributed to regeneration of labile U(VI) in the near river sediment, and carbonate mineral dissolution in the inland sediment. The desorption reaction was best described as an equilibrium surface complexation reaction. The noted differences in desorption behavior appear to result from U(VI) contamination and hydrologic history, as well as sediment carbonate content. Insights are provided on the dynamic adsorption/desorption behavior of contaminants in linked groundwater-river systems.  相似文献

We propose a test which allows us to check whether a luminosity function model can account for the intrinsic luminosity distribution of a magnitude–redshift sample complete in apparent magnitude. No a priori assumptions are required concerning the redshift-space distribution of the sources, so neither the clustering nor an eventual evolution of the mean number density of the galaxies affects the conclusions of the goodness-of-fit test. The statistical efficiency of the test, if used as a fitting technique for estimating the best-fitting solution of a parametric luminosity function model, is comparable to the efficiency of standard maximum likelihood fitting techniques. The goodness-of-fit test presents however a major improvement compared with fitting techniques in general: the capacity to assess the adequacy of the proposed parametric model to the data. The computational implementation of this new test is straightforward. Its potential is illustrated on the Southern Sky Redshift Survey of da Costa et al.  相似文献

This study, carried out at the State University of N.Y. in Buffalo, N.Y. (USA), concerns the construction and operation of a vertically distorted rotating Froude model of Lake Constance and experimentation to determine circulation patterns under both homogeneous and stratified conditions. The model/prototype length ratio equals 1/17,000 and depth ratio 1/650. The rotating model can simulate one prototype day in 2 min 10 s. Briefly the findings indicate: 1. Model seiche periods and decay modulii were equivalent to those in the prototype. 2. Results with the homogeneous model show extreme sensitivity of the model to differing inflow densities. 3. Coriolis effects have a distinct influence on the river-induced circulation. 4. Some aspects of the stratified experiments with wind contrast with earlier interpretations of current patterns. 5. In both the homogeneous and stratified model cases, the effects of wind on circulation patterns dominate over those of the inflowing Alpenrhein. 6. The effects of various wind stress fields were also examined by a two-dimensional mathematical model.  相似文献

Often extreme events, more than changes in mean conditions, have the greatest impact on the environment and human well-being. Here we examine changes in the occurrence of extremes in the timing of the annual formation and disappearance of lake ice in the Northern Hemisphere. Both changes in the mean condition and in variability around the mean condition can alter the probability of extreme events. Using long-term ice phenology data covering two periods 1855–6 to 2004–5 and 1905–6 to 2004–5 for a total of 75 lakes, we examined patterns in long-term trends and variability in the context of understanding the occurrence of extreme events. We also examined patterns in trends for a 30-year subset (1975–6 to 2004–5) of the 100-year data set. Trends for ice variables in the recent 30-year period were steeper than those in the 100- and 150-year periods, and trends in the 150-year period were steeper than in the 100-year period. Ranges of rates of change (days per decade) among time periods based on linear regression were 0.3−1.6 later for freeze, 0.5−1.9 earlier for breakup, and 0.7−4.3 shorter for duration. Mostly, standard deviation did not change, or it decreased in the 150-year and 100-year periods. During the recent 50-year period, standard deviation calculated in 10-year windows increased for all ice measures. For the 150-year and 100-year periods changes in the mean ice dates rather than changes in variability most strongly influenced the significant increases in the frequency of extreme lake ice events associated with warmer conditions and decreases in the frequency of extreme events associated with cooler conditions.  相似文献
