Cation distribution in pentlandites (Fe,Ni)9S8: Dependence on pressure and temperature and kinetics of the cation exchange reaction

This paper describes the distribution of Fe and Ni between the octahedral and tetrahedral sites in pentlandite (Fe,Ni)₉S₈. The dependence of the distribution on pressure and temperature and the activation energy of the cation exchange reaction were determined through annealing experiments. Synthetic crystals were annealed at 433–723 K and pressures up to 4 GPa, and natural crystals were annealed at 423, 448 and 473 K in evacuated silica capillary tubes for various durations. The cation distributions in the synthetic crystals were determined with an X-ray powder method employing the anomalous dispersion effect of CuK. and FeK radiations, while those of natural crystals were calculated from the cell dimensions. The values of U, S and V for the Fe/Ni exchange reaction are –6818 J mol^–1, 20.52 J K^–1 mol^–1, and 6.99 × 10^–6 m³ mol^–1, respectively. The dependence of the Fe/Ni distribution on pressure (Pa) and temperature (Kelvin) was determined as lnK = 2.47+8.20 × 10² T ^–1+8.41 x 10^–7 T ^–1 P, where K = (Fe/Ni)_octahedral /(Fe/Ni)_tetrahedral. The activation energy of the cation exchange reaction was 185 kJ mol^–1.     

Benthic infaunal communities around two artificial reefs in Mamala Bay, Oahu, Hawaii

Non-fishery use of artificial reefs has been given attention in recent years. The primary concern associated with non-fishery artificial reefs is their effects to the surrounding ecosystems. This study examined the infaunal communities around two non-fishery artificial reefs (the sunken vessels YO257 and Sea Tiger) in Mamala Bay, Hawaii. Infaunal community structures at these artificial reefs were relatively similar to one at a nearly natural patch reef. A large amount of basalt gravel around YO257 associated with its deployment operation possibly had an effect on the surrounding community by increasing pore space. Polychaete assemblages were compared with existing data throughout the bay, and this revealed that the variation in sediment grain sizes and depths seemed to play some role in structuring the polychaete communities. Nevertheless, the infaunal communities around the artificial reefs were typical and within the range of natural variation in Mamala Bay, supporting their beneficial uses in ecotourism.     

Phase transformations in ABO 4 type compounds under high pressure

For ABO ₄ type ternary oxides, high pressure phase transformations known up to the present are reviewed, and an attempt is made to explain and predict crystal structures of their high pressure phases. When ABO ₄ type compounds are plotted based on the two variables, k=r _A /r _B and t=(r _A +r _B )/2r _O, where r _A , r _B , and r _O are the ionic radii of A and B cations and divalent oxygen, they can be classified into the major structure types. It is found empirically that a compound basically transforms to the structure type isostructural with a compound lying in a classified area with the same k and larger t values in the diagram.     

On the radial distributions of molecular clouds in galaxies

The dynamics of the interstellar gas (the IS gas) driven by the viscous torque of a system of giant molecular clouds (the MC gas) is considered with the infinitesimally thin disk layer approximation. N-body simulation of giant molecular clouds in a galaxy

We madeN-body simulation of Giant Molecular Clouds in a model galaxy and confirmed that their random motion is generated and accelerated by purely gravitational interaction among them in some 10^7–8 yr.
