During the AIDJEX Main Experiment, April 1975 through May 1976, a comprehensive microwave sensing program was performed on the sea ice of the Beaufort Sea. Surface and aircraft measurements were obtained during all seasons using a wide variety of active and passive microwave sensors. The surface program obtained passive microwave measurements of various ice types using four antennas mounted on a tracked vehicle. In three test regions, each with an area of approximately 1.5 × 104 m2, detailed ice crystallographic, dielectric properties, and brightness temperatures of first-year, multiyear, and first-year/multiyear mixtures were measured. A NASA aircraft obtained passive microwave measurements of the entire area of the AIDJEX manned station array (triangle) during each of 18 flights. This verified the earlier reported ability to distinguish first-year and multiyear ice types and concentration and gave new information on ways to observe ice mixtures and thin ice types. The active microwave measurements from aircraft included those from an X- and L-band radar and from a scatterometer. The former is used to study a wide variety of ice features and to estimate deformations, while both are equally usable to observe ice types. With the present data, only the scatterometer can be used to distinguish positively multiyear from first-year and various types of thin ice. Euhedral, post-depositional albite from the Eastern and Western Alps, the western Carpathians and some Greek islands was examined petrographically and geochemically to gain insights into the nature of feldspar reactions in carbonate rocks. This study focuses on coarsely crystalline, homogeneously nucleated albite in order to avoid problems related to the presence of inseparable detrital material in fine-grained albite varieties. All albite samples show a very restricted compositional variability and are typically ≥ 99 mol% Ab component. Unit-cell parameters determined by Rietveld analysis are slightly more variable than previously accepted, but confirm high Al–Si ordering characteristic of low albite. The oxygen isotopic composition of albite ranges from + 19·4‰ to + 28·3‰ VSMOW. There is no direct relationship between the δ18O value and the inferred temperature of albite formation, nor is there one with stoichiometry. The coarse crystal size (up to several millimetres in diameter), petrographic evidence showing albite cross-cutting stylolites, greater abundance of albite in carbonate rocks subject to high-grade diagenetic or weak metamorphic overprinting and available fluid inclusion data suggest that albite precipitation is favoured at higher temperatures in carbonates than in sandstones. Pore fluids were invariably brines, as suggested by the inferred high positive δ18Ofluid values, the common association of albite-bearing carbonates and evaporites and reports of saline fluid inclusions in albite. The presence of authigenic albite may thus be a useful tracer of palaeobrine–carbonate reactions, particularly in deep-burial and incipient metamorphic settings.  相似文献

A petrographic investigation revealed polyphase quartz cementation in the Finefrau Sandstone (Upper Carboniferous, Western Germany) and the Solling Sandstone (Lower Triassic, Central Germany). Three different cements could be distinguished in each sandstone based on their cathodoluminescence and trace element composition. The first quartz generation is suggested to have been formed during eogenesis due to dissolution and replacement of feldspar. The mesogenetic paragenesis comprises two generations of quartz and illite, which are accompanied by albite in the Solling Sandstone. Sharp luminescence zoning in quartz overgrowths points to distinct episodes of cementation in both sandstones. Significant amounts of Al, Li and H and traces of Ge and B have been detected in the quartz overgrowths. The Al‐content of the quartz cements in the Finefrau Sandstones exceeds that in the quartz cements in the Solling Sandstone by a factor of five. It is suggested that this compositional variation reflects the conditions in the pore‐water, such as temperature and pH. The Al‐concentration is generally correlated to the Li‐content with the exception of the latest quartz generation in the Finefrau Sandstones which is also most enriched in trace elements. The ratio of Li/Al varies between 0·11 and 0·25 in the two sandstones. The Li/H‐ratio, which ranges from 0·12 to 0·3, is controlled by the activity ratio of Li and H in the pore fluid. Clay minerals are the most important source for Li and high salinities favour the mobilization of Li during diagenesis. Thus, a relatively low salinity and low pH are responsible for the low Li/H‐ratio in the Finefrau Sandstone, while high salinity and neutral to alkaline pH results in a high Li/H‐ratio for the Solling Sandstone. The Ge‐contents are generally near the average of detrital quartz and indicate that pressure dissolution is a major source for quartz cementation. Different chemical compositions of distinct quartz generations indicate changes in the physico‐chemical conditions and point to mobilization of silica from different sources (for example, pressure solution and clay mineral transformations).  相似文献

A new approach to quantify microstructures of coarse-grained marbles is presented. This technique is based on the intensity of light reflectance in dependence of the crystallographic orientation of calcite grains. The technique setup consists of a high-resolution camera, a strong light source and the polished sample in reflection position. Microstructural data obtained with this method are comparable with those obtained by light microscopy or by secondary electron microscopy. However, the new approach reflects the grain size distribution even more accurately than in the case of other techniques, because it allows an easy quantification of larger sample surfaces. Therefore, in contrast to established techniques, microstructural analysis and statistics can also be performed for coarse-grained samples with grains that exceed diameters of 1 cm. With this new technique, coarse-grained mylonitic microstructures from Naxos were quantified, which in turn allowed relating different microfabrics to different strain localization episodes within a large-scale shear zone complex.  相似文献

We apply our technique for indirect imaging of the accretion stream to the polar HU Aquarii, using eclipse profiles observed when the system was in a high accretion state. The accretion stream is relatively luminous, contributing as much as the accretion region on the white dwarf, or more, to the overall system brightness. We model the eclipse profiles using a model stream consisting of a ballistic trajectory from the L1 point followed by a magnetically channelled trajectory that follows a dipole field line out of the orbital plane. We perform model fits using two geometries: a stream that accretes on to both footpoints of the field line, and a stream that accretes only on to the footpoint of the field line above the orbital plane. The stream images indicate that the distribution of emission along the stream is not a simple function of the radial distance from the white dwarf. The stream is redirected by the magnetic field of the white dwarf at a distance 1.0–1.3×1010 cm from the white dwarf; this implies a mass transfer rate in the range 8–76×1016 g s−1. The absorption dips in the light curve indicate that the magnetically entrained part of the stream moves from 42° to 48° from the line of centres over the three nights of observation. This is in close agreement with the results of the one-footpoint models, suggesting that this is the more appropriate geometry for these data. The stream images show that, in almost all sections of the stream, the flux peaks in B and is successively fainter in U , V and R .  相似文献

This paper discusses the evolutionary development, which has taken place over the last decade, in digital sonar systems architecture with the application of first, second, and third generation computers as system controllers for sonar systems. It is the opinion of the authors that, with the arrival of microprocessors, the system controller tasks in real time digital sonars will diminish. We present, as the "fourth generation," the present systems which still have a relatively large CPU, assisted by an array of microprocessors under their control for several subtasks which can be handled, more efficiently, locally in the systems. The "fifth generation" concept is postulated as a further development of this concept. A distributed processing scheme is presented in which the processing elements are actually highly functionally distributed themselves at the lowest level of architecture; consequently, the user views them as uniprocessors within the tightly coupled network. This approach should result in relatively high throughput utilizing a fairly small repertoire of modular hardware components and requiring minimal software effort by implementing, via firmware, very high level macros. This concept allows adaptive system architecture for the various advanced sonar data processing requirements for multielement linear, spatial, or blanket type array systems postulated for the future.  相似文献

Trace element contents and distributions in authigenic quartz cement in deeply buried (2500–4000 m) Haushi Group sandstones from wells in Oman have been investigated in order to determine the factors that control trace element uptake during precipitation.Scanning electron microscope-cathodoluminescence images show well developed growth zones within the quartz cement, which correlate with chemical zonations observed in electron microprobe Al distribution maps. The most abundant trace elements are Al (50–3000 μg g?1), Li (1–100 μg g?1), Na (1–40 μg g?1), and Ge (0.3–5 μg g?1) with a strong linear correlation between Li and Al and a weaker one between Ge and Al. The molar concentration of Li (+ Na) accounts only for ~ 15% of the charge compensation for Al3+ substitution of Si4+. Though H was not measured in this study, these data indicate a major role of H in charge balancing Al3+. The samples belong to the same stratigraphic unit and have similar petrography, but show considerable variability in absolute trace element concentrations between different wells. This variability does not correlate with either sample depth or temperature and shows no regional pattern, but seems to reflect petrophysical and tectonic differences within the sedimentary basin.Petrographic observations of the cogenetic mineral assemblages and hydrochemical modelling indicate that a change from the equilibrium assemblage quartz–kaolinite (–dolomite) to quartz–illite (–dolomite) reflects a decrease in the CO2 concentration and concurrent variations of the Al concentration. It is concluded that changes in the CO2 concentrations are responsible for fluctuations in fluid Al concentrations and thus likely also in the investigated quartz cements.  相似文献

The very young Wabar craters formed by impact of an iron meteorite and are known to the scientific community since 1933. We describe field observations made during a visit to the Wabar impact site, provide analytical data on the material collected, and combine these data with poorly known information discovered during the recovery of the largest meteorites. During our visit in March 2008, only two craters (Philby‐B and 11 m) were visible; Philby‐A was completely covered by sand. Mapping of the ejecta field showed that the outcrops are strongly changing over time. Combining information from different visitors with our own and satellite images, we estimate that the large seif dunes over the impact site migrate by approximately 1.0–2.0 m yr?1 southward. Shock lithification took place even at the smallest, 11 m crater, but planar fractures (PFs) and undecorated planar deformation features (PDFs), as well as coesite and stishovite, have only been found in shock‐lithified material from the two larger craters. Shock‐lithified dune sand material shows perfectly preserved sedimentary structures including cross‐bedding and animal burrows as well as postimpact structures such as open fractures perpendicular to the bedding, slickensides, and radiating striation resembling shatter cones. The composition of all impact melt glasses can be explained as mixtures of aeolian sand and iron meteorite. We observed a partial decoupling of Fe and Ni in the black impact glass, probably due to partitioning of Ni into unoxidized metal droplets. The absence of a Ca‐enriched component demonstrates that the craters did not penetrate the bedrock below the sand sheet, which has an estimated thickness of 20–30 m.  相似文献

The biological response of increased manganese in seawater was tested experimentally with the oyster species Crassostrea gigas by adding, once per day, a fixed quantity of MnCl2 to the container where the oysters were living. Uptake of Mn2+ in the shell was traced with cathodoluminescence and quantified with a high spatial resolution proton microprobe. The daily addition of MnCl2 resulted in the visualization of distinct growth increments seen simultaneously in both the calcitic shell and the aragonitic ligament. A relation was observed between the addition of Mn2+ to the seawater and incorporation of Mn in the mineral part of the shell. Thus, addition of MnCl2 to seawater is an efficient tool to mark in vivo growth increments in bio-mineralised carbonates.  相似文献
