During the past centuries, the city of Basel has suffered damage caused by earthquakes. One extraordinary event described in historical documents is the strong earthquake which occurred in 1356. The 1356 event, one of the strongest earthquakes in northwest-Europe, was obviously much stronger than the low-magnitude earthquakes observed in the area during this century. Even though the present seismicity in the Basel area is low, strong earthquakes have to be expected due to the city's geographical location close to the northern boundary of the African-European convergence zone, at the southern end of the Rhinegraben. A crucial step towards preparedness for future events and mitigation of earthquake risk involves a microzonation study of the city. The study is carried out in three steps: (1) a detailed mapping of the geology and geotechnical properties of the area, (2) measurement, interpretation and modelling of ambient noise data, and (3) numerical modelling of expected ground motions during earthquakes. A qualitative microzonation of the centre of Basel is presented, and it is discussed by comparing it to the historically reported damage of the 1356 earthquake.  相似文献

In this study, we present a novel approach to measure fundamental processes of cohesive sediment erosion. The experimental setup consists of a laboratory erosion flume (SETEG) and a photogrammetric method to detect sediment erosion (PHOTOSED). Detailed data are presented for three erosion experiments, which were conducted with a natural non-cohesive/cohesive sediment mixture at increasing sediment depths (4, 8, 16 cm). In each experiment, the sediment was exposed to a set of incrementally increasing shear stresses and the erosion was measured dynamically, pixel-based, and approximate to the process scale given the resolution of PHOTOSED. This enables us to distinguish between (i) individual emerging erosion spots caused by surface erosion and (ii) large holes torn open by detached aggregate chunks. Moreover, interrelated processes were observed, such as (iii) propagation of the erosion in the longitudinal and lateral direction leading to merging of disconnected erosion areas and (iv) progressive vertical erosion of already affected areas. By complementing the (bulk) erosion volume profiles with additional quantitative variables, which contain spatial information (erosion area, specific deepening, number of disconnected erosion areas), conclusions on the erosion behaviour (and the dominant processes) can be drawn without requiring qualitative information (such as visual observations). In addition, we provide figures indicating the spatio-temporal erosion variability and the (bulk) erosion rates for selected time periods. We evaluate the variability by statistical quantities and show that significant erosion is mainly confined to only a few events during temporal progression, but then considerably exceeds the time-averaged median of the erosion (factors between 7.0 and 16.0). Further, we point to uncertainties in using (bulk) erosion rates to assess cohesive sediment erosion and particularly the underlying processes. As a whole, the results emphasise the need to measure cohesive sediment erosion with high spatio-temporal resolution to obtain reliable and robust information. © 2020 The Authors. We analyse the effect of fluid flow on the recent thermal field for the Brandenburg region (North German Basin) which is strongly affected by salt structures. The basin fill is modified by a thick layer of mobilized salt (Zechstein, Upper Permian) that decouples the overburden from deeper parts of the lithosphere and is responsible for thermal anomalies since salt has a distinctly higher thermal conductivity than the surrounding sediments and is impermeable to fluid flow. Numerical simulations of coupled fluid flow and heat transfer are carried out to investigate the influence of fluid flow on the shallow temperature field above the Zechstein salt, based on the finite element method. A comparison of results from conductive and coupled modelling reveals that the temperature field down to the low-permeable Triassic Muschelkalk is influenced by fluids, where the shallow low-permeable Tertiary Rupelian-clay is absent. Overall cooling is induced by forced convective forces, the depth range of which is controlled by the communication pathways between the different aquifers. Moreover, buoyancy-induced effects are found in response to temperature-dependent differences in the fluid density where forced convective forces are weak. The range of influence is controlled by the thickness and the permeability of the permeable strata above the Triassic Muschelkalk. With increasing depth, thermal conduction mainly controls the short-wavelength pattern of the temperature distribution, whereas the long-wavelength pattern results from interaction between the highly conductive crust and low-conductive sediments. A high level of knowledge is now available in the extremely relevant field of underground gas emissions from coal mines. However, there are still tasks seeking improved solutions, such as prediction of gas emissions, choice of the most suitable panel design, extension of predrainage systems, further optimization of postdrainage systems, options for the control of gas emissions during retreat mining operations, and prevention of gas outbursts. Research results on these most important topics are presented and critically evaluated. Methods to predict gas emissions for disturbed and undisturbed longwall faces are presented. Prediction of the worked seam gas emission and the gas emission from headings are also mentioned but not examined in detail. The ventilation requirements are derived from the prediction results and in combination with gas drainage the best distribution of available air currents is planned. The drainage of the gas from the worked coal seam, also referred to as predrainage, can be performed without application of suction only by over or underworking the seam. But in cases where this simple method is not applicable or not effective enough, inseam-boreholes are needed to which suction is applied for a relatively long time. The reason for this is the low permeability of deep coal seams in Europe. The main influences on the efficiency of the different degasing methods are explained. Conventional gas drainage employing cross measure boreholes is still capable of improvement, in terms of drilling and equipment as well as the geometrical borehole parameters and the operation of the overall system. Improved control of gas emissions at the return end of retreating faces can be achieved by installation of gas drainage systems based on drainage roadways or with long and large diameter boreholes. The back-return method can be operated safely only with great difficulty, if at all. Another method is lean-gas drainage from the goaf. The gas outburst situation in Germany is characterized by events predominantly in the form of ‘nonclassical' outbursts categorized as ‘sudden liberation of significant quantities of gas'. Recent research results in this field led to a classification of these phenomena into five categories, for which suitable early detection and prevention measures are mentioned.  相似文献

The effects of the chloroacetanilide herbicide metazachlor have been investigated in outdoor artificial mesocosms. Decreasing phytoplankton densities were caused by the application, however, the communities recovered after 30 to 35 days. Periphyton growth was found to be affected not only by the herbicide application but by the presence of species with different ability to grow on artificial substrates. Zooplankton diversity was small due to low density of ingestible algae species. Oxygen saturation was found to be correlated with the dosage levels of the herbicide in the second half of the study.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies have provided evidence for the association of air particulate matter (PM) and heavy metals concentrations with adverse health effects for human population but also for environment. Even if the knowledge of PM and metals concentration is important, it has been clearly demonstrated that the chemical form of an element is essential to understand its environmental behaviour and its potential toxicity. Studies have demonstrated that zinc (Zn), particularly in its soluble forms, induces inflammatory response in lungs. As steel plant is an important heavy metals emitter, and as atmospheric emissions are rich in Zn, the aim of our work was to determine Zn bearing phase and speciation in steel work air particulate matter by a multi-technical approach including physical methods like SEM, Extended X-Rays Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and chemical techniques like ICP-AES and sequential leaching. Results show that Zn is mainly associated with two phases, (i) one insoluble phase which has been clearly identified, as Zn–Fe oxide and similar to franklinite, and (ii) one easily soluble phase, containing calcium and probably associated with carbonates which present a greater toxical potential for environment and human health.  相似文献

We calculated 2D and 3D mantle convection models for Venus using digitized atmosphere temperatures from the model of Bullock and Grinspoon (Bullock, M.A., Grinspoon, D.H. [2001]. Icarus 150, 19–37) to study the interaction between interior dynamics and atmosphere thermal evolution. The coupling between atmosphere and interior occurs through mantle degassing and the effect of varying concentrations of the greenhouse gas H2O on the surface temperature. Exospheric loss of hydrogen to space is accounted for as a H2O sink. The surface temperature enters the mantle convection model as a boundary condition.Our results suggest a self-consistent feedback mechanism between the interior and the atmosphere resulting in spatial–temporal surface renewal. Greenhouse warming of the atmosphere results in an increase in the surface temperature. Whenever the surface temperature reaches a critical value, the viscosity difference across the lithosphere becomes smaller than about 105 and the surface becomes locally mobile. The critical surface temperature depends on the activation energy for mantle creep, the stress exponent in the non-Newtonian mantle rheology law, and the mantle temperature. Surface renewal together with surface lava flow may explain why the surface of Venus is young on average, i.e. not older than a few hundred million years.The mobilization of the near-surface lithosphere increases the rate of heat removal from the mantle and thereby the interior cooling rate. The enhanced cooling results in a reduction of the water outgassing rates. As a consequence of decreasing water concentrations in the atmosphere, the surface temperature decreases. Our model calculations suggest that Venus should have been geologically active until recently. This is in agreement with several lines of observational evidence from thermal emissivity measurements and crater distribution analyses.  相似文献
