The analysis of rural social change has reached a point of somewhat saturated orthodoxy. Numerous studies over the last 20 years have served to reinforce a standard view that it is the ‘newcomer vs local’ conflict which lies at the heart of social and cultural changes in rural communities. Moreover, these broad categorisations have often been translated into class terms without due regard for the detailed circumstances of locality or intra-class fractions. This paper presents some evidence from an intensive study of 10 parishes in rural Gloucestershire, and seeks to provide a detailed background to the distribution of selected indicators of social change in that area. It focuses on the diversions and needs experienced by different social groups and suggests additional complexities to those recognised in traditional treatments of rural conflict. 相似文献
The change of extreme precipitation is assessed with the HadGEM2-AO - 5 Regional Climate Models (RCMs) chain, which is a national downscaling project undertaken cooperatively by several South Korean institutes aimed at producing regional climate change projection with fine resolution (12.5 km) around the Korean Peninsula. The downscaling domain, resolution and lateral boundary conditions are held the same among the 5 RCMs to minimize the uncertainties from model configuration. Climatological changes reveal a statistically significant increase in the mid-21st century (2046- 2070; Fut1) and the late-21st century (2076-2100; Fut2) precipitation properties related to extreme precipitation, such as precipitation intensity and average of upper 5 percentile daily precipitation, with respect to the reference period (1981-2005). Changes depending on the intensity categories also present a clear trend of decreasing light rain and increasing heavy rain. In accordance with these results, the change of 1-in-50 year maximum precipitation intensity over South Korea is estimated by the GEV method. The result suggests that the 50-year return value (RV50) will change from -32.69% to 72.7% and from -31.6% to 96.32% in Fut1 and from -31.97% to 86.25% and from -19.45% to 134.88% in Fut2 under representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. This study suggests that multi-RCMs can be used to reduce uncertainties and assess the future change of extreme precipitation more reliably. Moreover, future projection of the regional climate change contains uncertainties evoked from not only driving GCM but also RCM. This paper presents a fundamental study on the effect of the relative humidity on the rockfill crushing strength. This aspect plays an important role in the mechanical behaviour of rockfill, and it is known that certain characteristics of the granular materials, such as compressibility and shear strength, depend on the confining stress, which is a function of the particles crushing. An increased interest has been observed regarding the effect of the relative humidity in the mechanical behaviour of rockfill. Unfortunately, limited research has been conducted until now regarding the study of individual particle crushing. Therefore, this paper thoroughly investigated particle crushing, by performing single-particle crushing tests on rockfill particles divided into four size ranges, under different relative humidity conditions. The experimental results reveal a considerable influence of the relative humidity in the studied rockfill particles, whose strength of the particles with the greatest dimensions in saturated conditions was reduced by half. Consistent macro-mechanical evidence demonstrates that particle’s size and relative humidity conditions depict the most important factors that influence particle crushing strength.

Vibrational modelling is at the present time the only known way to predict the heat capacities of the Earth's mantle minerals at high-pressure and high-temperature. To test the validity of this method for λ-type transitions, we have applied it to the α-β quartz transition (T0=846±1 K). Raman spectra of quartz were recorded up to 900 K. Measured frequency shifts of the α-quartz Raman modes were then used in conjunction with available high-pressure Raman data to calculate intrinsic mode anharmonicity, through the parameter ai=(?Lnvi/?T)v. Vibrational modelling of the heat capacity at constant volume, Cv, and at constant pressure, Cp, including anharmonic corrections deduced from the ai parameters, are compared to experimental data. Taking into account the soft-mode associated to the α-β quartz transition, the model reproduces the excess of Cp related to the transition. Then, this study confirms that detecting a soft-mode from vibrational data allows one to predict λ-type transitions. However, when modelling the thermodynamic properties, the contribution of a soft-mode cannot be established from spectroscopic data. Therefore, one needs first to determine this contribution in order to predict the heat capacities of Earth's mantle minerals displaying λ-type transitions. River flow variability is known to influence estuarine production, yet knowledge on its effect upon estuarine food webs dynamics
is still scarce. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were used to assess the effect of river flow in the connectivity and
food web interactions between the two main fish nursery areas of the Tagus estuary. The aims of the present work were to investigate
the seasonal variation in food web structure and the exchange rate of individuals of marine juvenile fish among estuarine
nurseries, to compare the spring of a rainy year (2001) with that of an average year (2000), and to investigate the impact
of the winter floods of 2001. A low level of connectivity was observed for the fish species that use these areas as nurseries.
In low river flow conditions, two isotopically distinct food webs were established in each nursery area. These food webs were
very sensitive to small variations in the freshwater input. Winter floods seem to disrupt the localized food webs that are
established in low river flow periods, leading to the re-establishment of a wider food web. While in rainy years this wide
food web is maintained until spring, in average years the food web undergoes fragmentation into two localized and isotopically
distinctive food webs. The increase in frequency of droughts due to climate change should lower the connectivity of the estuarine
fish nurseries food webs, causing habitat fragmentation and consequent loss in complexity and resilience. 相似文献
In mineral resource evaluation a careful analysis and assessment of the geology, assay data and structural data is required. One important question is where to position the exploration boreholes, another is what method to use when analyzing the grade in the collected material. Here, a challenge of this type is whether one should analyze the collected core samples with accurate and expensive lab equipment or a simpler hand-held meter. A dataset of about 2000 oxide observations is available, along with relevant explanatory variables, from a deposit in Norway. A Gaussian geostatistical model is used to predict the grade parameter on block support. To improve the predictions, several new boreholes are planned, giving 265 additional samples. The associated uncertainty reduction is evaluated, and a resource evaluation is performed with and without the planned data. Then the value of information of the planned data is computed, using assumed costs, recovery rates and revenues. The data acquired with the hand-held meter has almost the same value as the more expensive acquisition strategy, given that the already established correlation between the two datasets is valid. 相似文献
Strongly-deformed marbles may be easily confused with linear and elongated carbonatite intrusions. Both rocks may present similar texture and foliation to the host rock, or even cross cutting field relationships, which could be interpreted either as igneous or high-grade metamorphosed marble. Diagnostic criteria are even more complex when there is evidence of melting of the metasedimentary carbonate rock, such as has been described in the Himalayas and in the Eastern Ghats, India.In the Alto Moxotó Terrane, a high-grade gneissic domain of the Borborema Province, Northeastern Brazil, there are metacarbonates associated with banded gneisses and different metaplutonic rocks. Field evidence indicates the absence of other metasedimentary rocks associated with these marbles, thus suggesting that these carbonates were separated from other siliciclastic metasedimentary rocks. The presence of marble also suggests that it may represent the initial stage of a crustal carbon recycling into the mantle. These marbles present many field similarities to carbonatites (e.g., fluid-flow structure) and, together with metagranites and metamafic intrusions, may represent a major collisional tectonic suture.A detailed study of the carbon, oxygen and strontium isotopic composition of these marbles is presented. This study aims to identify the origin of the different isotopic components. It is argued that these rocks were subjected to temperature and pressure conditions that were sufficiently high to have melted them. The isotopic data presented here support this interpretation and indicate the mixing of two components: (i) one characterized by radiogenic Sr isotopes and mantle-like carbon isotopes, which is associated with the gneissic and mafic rocks, and (ii) another characterized by low 87Sr/86Sr ratios and highly positive δ13C values. Available geochemical data for the upper Paleoproterozoic indicate that the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of ocean water, varying between 0.7050 (2.25 ± 0.25 Ga) and 0.7047 (1.91 Ga), falls within the lower range of the samples from Itatuba and thus reinforces the interpretation that these marbles are sedimentary-derived and were partially contaminated by interaction with the host gneissic and mafic rocks. 相似文献
