Estimating the influence of seismic and meteorological factors on the accuracy of measurements by relative gravimeters

Continuous high-precision long-term gravity measurements are carried out at the geophysical observatory located in the experimental base of Vladimir State University. The long time series of gravity acceleration and its standard deviation are obtained. The factors responsible for the increases in the studied deviations are analyzed. The recommendations for improving the accuracy of relative gravity measurements are formulated.

Specifying the values of delta factor for the Dolgoe Ledovo permanent gravity station

Continuous long-term highly precise gravity measurements at the Dolgoe Ledovo gravity station operated by the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences, are carried out. The long-term time series of tidal corrections are obtained, and the values of the delta factor are specified for this station, which enables the correct intercomparison of the absolute gravity instruments.     

Theoretical concepts of the fractal principle in the seismic process

A chain of theoretical concepts of the seismic process is constructed based on experimental results of the destruction of the solid sample under uniaxial compression obtained by G.A. Sobolev. These concepts satisfy the fractal principle and make it possible to specify calculation operations with parameters of the natural seismicity. Seismological data on aftershocks of the Racha earthquake of 1991 is processed using new procedures. As a result, the spatial structure of the focus has been specified, which makes it possible to construct detailed models of its potential.     

Allowance for the vertical gradient in an airborne gravity survey

When processing the results of an airborne gravity survey flown in the Arctic at flight heights of 2000 to 3000 m, the authors encountered conditions, when the values of the free-air anomaly of gravity exceeded the values taken from the anomaly map, with a trend towards “heavier” values. The formula for calculation of the vertical gradient as a function of the latitude of the locality has been refined. The tentative calculations reported in the paper also indicate that a free-air gravity anomaly above the mountainous areas will contain additional positive systematic components, since only the effect of the vertical gradient of the normal gravity field is taken into account here, and the flight’s height during an airborne gravity survey, above a mountainous area, should be held constant, otherwise it would be necessary to take into account additional systematic biases, obtained in different flights, which are caused by the different values of the vertical gradient at different heights.
