OSIRIS (OH-Suppressing Infra-Red Integral-field Spectrograph) is a new facility instrument for the Keck Observatory. After seeing first light in February 2005, OSIRIS is currently undergoing commissioning. OSIRIS provides the capability of performing three-dimensional spectroscopy in the near-infrared z, J, H, and K bands at the resolution limit of the Keck II telescope, which is equipped with adaptive optics and a laser guide star. The science case for OSIRIS is summarized, and the instrument and associated data reduction software are described.  相似文献

This paper presents a three-dimensional analytic linear wave solution for surface gravity wave propagation over a sloping bottom that is valid for small, but realistic, slopes. The sloping-bottom linear model is compared to published laboratory data and to predictions of two-dimensional, constant-bottom nonlinear theories. The model is shown to describe the measured wave-height growth in the wave transformation region up to a limiting local Ursell number Ur of 0.35-1.0, depending on the wave type, although, as a linear model, it does not predict the harmonics observed in that range. For Ur<0.35, the harmonics can generally be neglected and the sloping-bottom linear theory agrees closely with both the published wave-height data and third-order Stokes nonlinear theory. As a three-dimensional linear model, superposition can be invoked to synthesize and relate wave structure in the transformation region to complex incident ocean spectra with both wind wave and swell components that arrive with a range of incidence angles. As such, the sloping-bottom linear model presented here should be a convenient useful tool for ocean modeling through a significant portion of the wave transformation region  相似文献

This paper develops a compensation algorithm based on Linear–Quadratic–Gaussian (LQG) control system design whose parameters are determined (in part) by a model of the atmosphere. The model for the atmosphere is based on the open-loop statistics of the atmosphere as observed by the wavefront sensor, and is identified from these using an auto-regressive, moving average (ARMA) model. The (LQG) control design is compared with an existing compensation algorithm for a simulation developed at ESO that represents the operation of MACAO adaptive optics system on the 8.2 m telescopes at Paranal, Chile. The Lynch’s Crater peat deposit in NE-Australia is a sensitive environmental archive located in the tropical Southern Hemisphere. This unique deposit illustrates that local and regional changes had a profound effect on the local Australian ecosystem over the past 55 kyr. To obtain a proxy of past climate changes, trace and major element geochemistry analyses were applied to a 13 m peat core from the crater. Principle component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the main factors that control elemental distribution in the peat and to add interpretative strength to the geochemical behavior of selected major and trace elements. For example, Sc, Al, Cu, and Pb were found to be related to increased erosion of the basin soils, and from this, several periods of significant flux from atmospheric input and/or terrigenous run-off were identified. Geochemically mobile elements during rock weathering and pedogenesis, such as Mg, Ca, and Sr helped to identify the peat ombrotrophic-minerotrophic boundary at ∼1.5 m depth and offered important information about fluxes of these nutrients to the mire and their dynamics within the deposit. Arsenic and V comparisons between the peat record (high concentrations in some peat sections) and in local basin rocks (very low concentrations), suggested the presence of a long range, atmospheric dust source early in the formation of the mire. The Lynch’s Crater peat record presents a continuous record of environmental change in tropical Australia and contributes new understanding to geochemical processes in peatlands.  相似文献

A series of exploratory experiments on the concentration of base metals through ion exchange reactions on clay minerals show promising results. The extraction of Pb, Zn and Cd from bentonite, illite, kaolinite and montmorillonite was successful and megascopic quantities of PbS, CdS and ZnS could be obtained at specific loci, depending essentially on the flow velocity, and the other cations present. These or similar exchange reactions are tentatively proposed as possible mechanisms of economic metal concentration during diagenesis.
Zusammenfassung Es werden experimentelle Resultate zur Anreicherung von Schwermetallen durch Tonminerale (Montmorillonite, Illite und Kaolinite) mitgeteilt. Eine erste Anreicherung kann über den Kationenaustausch bewirkt werden. In dem darauffolgenden zweiten, sehr viel wirksameren Schritt werden die Schwermetallionen aus den Tonlagern extrahiert und in deren Nähe als schwerlösliche Sulfide oder Carbonate gefällt. Die Extraktion beruht darauf, daß Tonschichten als Kationen-permeable Membranen wirken können. Sie wird von der Art der Tonminerale und der Kationen, den Lösungsgenossen, den Konzentrationsverhältnissen, dem pH-Wert, der Reaktionstemperatur, dem Porenvolumen und der Porenverteilung im Sediment beeinflußt.

Transient tracer data (tritium, CFC11 and CFC12) from the southern, central and northwestern Weddell Sea collected during Polarstern cruises ANT III-3, ANT V-2/3/4 and during Andenes cruise NARE 85 are presented and discussed in the context of hydrographic observations. A kinematic, time-dependent, multi-box model is used to estimate mean residence times and formation rates of several water masses observed in the Weddell Sea.Ice Shelf Water is marked by higher tritium and lower CFC concentrations compared to surface waters. The tracer signature of Ice Shelf Water can only be explained by assuming that its source water mass, Western Shelf Water, has characteristics different from those of surface waters. Using the transient nature of tritium and the CFCs, the mean residence time of Western Shelf Water on the shelf is estimated to be approximately 5 years. Ice Shelf Water is renewed on a time scale of about 14 years from Western Shelf Water by interaction of this water mass with glacial ice underneath the Filchner-Ronne Ice shelf. The Ice Shelf Water signature can be traced across the sill of the Filchner Depression and down the continental slope of the southern Weddell Sea. On the continental slope, new Weddell Sea Bottom Water is formed by entrainment of Weddell Deep Water and Weddell Sea Deep Water into the Ice Shelf Water plume. In the northwestern Weddell Sea, new Weddell Sea Bottom Water is observed in two narrow, deep boundary currents flowing along the base of the continental slope. Classically defined Weddell Sea Bottom Water (θ ≤ −0.7°C) and Weddell Sea Deep Water (−0.7°C ≤ θ ≤ 0°C) are ventilated from the deeper of these boundary currents by lateral spreading and mixing. Model-based estimates yield a total formation rate of 3.5Sv for new Weddell Sea Bottom Water (θ = −1.0°C) and a formation rate of at least 11Sv for Antarctic Bottom Water (θ = −0.5°C).  相似文献

Conspicuous anisotropy in the outgassing from comets, especially from short-period ones, appears to be the factor responsible for a frequent occurrence of a fan-shaped coma, extending in the general direction of the Sun. It is proposed that the pattern of deviations from the sunward direction contains information on the orientation of the spin axis and on the time lag in the sublimation process, which in turn provides insight into the nature of the nuclear surface. A simple model of a spherical rotating nucleus is formulated and a trial-and-error technique devised to determine the axis-orientation constants and a lage angle, a meaasure of the time lag in units of the rotation period. The results of application of this method to periodic comets Encke, Tempel 2, Borrelly, and Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 are presented. It is shown that the sense of rotation determined in this fashion is consistent with the results established for three of the four comets from the transverse component of the nongravitational force affecting their orbital motions. It is found that in general the time lag is strongly time dependent and that lag angles approaching 90° are rather common near perihelion, suggesting a complex surface structure that involves an insulting crust of dust of variable thickness and strength. These results are compared with the observed lightcurves of the four comets and with the calculated distributions of integrated insolation at the nuclear surface as functions of the cometocentric latitude and time. Noticed is a tendency of the comets to turn their spin axes to the Sun near perihelion and to replace, on the outbound leg of orbit, the established fan-orientation pattern by a “late”-tail pattern indicative of old, slowly accelerated particles. It is suggested that the motion of P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, which is due for a favorable return in 1979, was affected by a secular deceleration in 1930.  相似文献

Shallow groundwater in the northern Negev desert of Israel flows preferentially through a complex system of discontinuities. These discontinuities intersect what would otherwise be a massive, low-conductivity, high-porosity Eocene chalk. Vertical fractures and horizontal bedding planes were observed and mapped along approximately 1,200 m of scanline, 600 m of core and 30 two-dimensional trace planes. A bimodal distribution of size exists for the vertical fractures which occur as both single-layer fractures and multi-layer fractures. A bimodal distribution of log transmissivity was observed from slug tests conducted in packed-off, vertical intervals within the saturated zone. The different flow characteristics between the horizontal bedding planes and vertical-type fractures appear to be the cause of the bimodality. Two distinct conceptual models (discrete fracture network) were developed based on the fracture orientation, size, intensity and transmissivity statistics derived from field data. A correlation between fracture size and hydraulic aperture was established as the basis for calibrating the simulated model transmissivity to the field observations. This method of defining transmissivity statistically based on prior information is shown to be a reasonable and workable alternative to the usual conjecture approach towards defining transmissivity in a fractured-rock environment.  相似文献
