Guillemots Uria spp. account for ca. 70% of the total harvest of prey taken by seabirds breeding in the Barents Sea region. This paper presents guillemot chick diet data collected recently at four localities (Finnmark, Murman, Bjørnøya and Spitsbergen) and collates all the data found by the authors in the literature and in the archives of Tromsø Museum, the Norwegian Polar Institute and Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve. Guillemots consume a wide variety of prey and, in comparison to the harvest by predatory fish and marine mammals, their impact on the Barents Sea ecosystem is considered to be minimal. We point out the need for more systematic collection of data from different regions and at different times of the year before a final impact assessment can be made.  相似文献

Aerial strip surveys of polar bears in the Barents Sea were performed by helicopter in winter 1987. The number of bears within 100 m on each side of the helicopter was counted. A total of 263.6 km2 was surveyed and 21 bears were counted. Most of the bears were found in the southern part of the area, which indicates that the southwestern ice edge area in the Barents Sea is a very important winter habitat for polar bears.  相似文献

The stratigraphy in Hamnsundhelleren is as follows. A basal weathered rock bed of unknown age is followed by laminated clay deposited under stadial conditions and correlated with palaeomagnetism to the Laschamp excursion (43–47 000 yr BP). Angular blocks, bones and clay above this are 14C dated to the Ålesund Interstadial (28–38 000 yr BP). Another stadial laminated clay following the Ålesund Interstadial includes a palaeomagnetic excursion correlated with Lake Mungo (28 000 yr BP). The newly discovered Hamnsund Interstadial above this consists of frost-weathered clay and scattered angular blocks. It is 14C dated to 24 500 yr BP on bones mixed into the Ålesund Interstadial. The Hamnsund Interstadial is succeeded by another stadial laminated clay and then a Late-glacial–Holocene mixture of bones and blocks. In Hamnsundhelleren and other similar caves four successive phases of sedimentary environments for each ice-free–ice-covered cycle have been identified: (i) ice-free phase (deposition of bones and frost-weathered blocks); (ii) subaerial ice-dammed lake phase (sand or silt deposited in a lateral glacial lake); (iii) subglacial ice-dammed lake phase (cave closed by ice, deposition of till, debris flows and laminated clay); (d) ice-plugged phase (cave is plugged by frozen lake water and/or glacial ice, no deposition).  相似文献

Olahola is a wavecut cave positioned well above the postglacial marine limit. The sediment sequence in the cave can be litho- and magnetostratigraphically correlated with the sequence in the Skjonghelleren cave, 36 km northeast of this locality. Three boulder formations in Olahola represent three ice-free periods (including the Holocene) and two formations of laminated clay represent periods of ice-cover. Paleomagnetic excursions in the laminated clays have been correlated with the Lake Mungo/Mono Lake excursion (28 ka), and with the Laschamp excursion (43 ka), but the resolution of these events is much better in the caves than anywhere else. The paleomagnetic records from Skjonghelleren and Olahola suggest that during the Laschamp excursion at least 0.75–1 m of sediment accumulated in Skjonghelleren before sedimentation started in Olahola, indicating also an earlier ice coverage at Skjonghelleren.  相似文献
