A semianalytic perturbation theory for motion near the 3/1 commensurability in the planar elliptic restricted three-body problem is presented. The predictions of the theory are in good agreement with the features found on numerically generated surfaces of section; a global understanding of the phase space is achieved. The unusual features of the motion discovered by J. Wisdom (1982, Astron. J.87, 577–593; 1983a, Icarus56, 51–74) are explained. The principal cause of the large chaotic zone near the 3/1 commensurability is identified, and a new criterion for the existence of large-scale chaotic behavior is presented. 相似文献

This paper reviews research highlights of the past five years. Considerable progress has been made in observing and interpreting coronal mass ejections. The stability of coronal loops is much better understood and new observations of the onset of wind streams in coronal holes have been made. In West Greenland, early and mid Holocene relative sea level (RSL) fall was replaced by late Holocene RSL rise during the Neoglacial, after 4–3 cal. ka BP (thousand calibrated years before present). Here we present the results of an isolation basin RSL study completed near to the coastal town of Sisimiut, in central West Greenland. RSL fell from 14 m above sea level at 5.7 cal. ka BP to reach a lowstand of ?4.0 m at 2.3–1.2 cal. ka BP, before rising by an equivalent amount to present. Differences in the timing and magnitude of the RSL lowstand between this and other sites in West and South Greenland record the varied interplay of local and non‐Greenland RSL processes, notably the reloading of the Earth's crust caused by a Neoglacial expansion of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) and the subsidence associated with the collapse of the Laurentide Ice Sheet forebulge. This means that the timing of the sea level lowstand cannot be used to infer directly when the GIS advanced during the Neoglacial. The rise in Late Holocene RSL is contrary to recently reported bedrock uplift in the Sisimiut area, based on repeat GPS surveys. This indicates that a belt of peripheral subsidence around the current ice sheet margin was more extensive in the late Holocene, and that there has been a switch from subsidence to uplift at some point in the last thousand years or so. The surface mass density profiles at four locations within Saturn's rings are calculated using Voyager spacecraft images of spiral bending waves. Bending waves are vertical corrugations in Saturn's rings which are excited at vertical resonances of a moon, e.g., Mimas, whose orbit is inclined with respect to the mean plane of the rings. Bending waves propagate toward Saturn by virtue of the rings' self-gravity; their wavelength depends on the local surface mass density of the rings. Observations of bending waves can thus be used to determine the surface density in regions of Saturn's rings near vertical resonances. The average surface density of the outer B ring near Mimas' 4:2 inner vertical resonance is 54 ± 10 g cm?2. Surface density in this region probably varies by ~ 30% over radial length scales of tens of kilometers; and irregular radial structure is present on similar length scales in this region. Surface densities ranging from 24 g cm?2 to 45 g cm?2 are found in the A ring. Small scale variations in surface density are not seen in the A ring, consistent with its more uniform optical appearance. 相似文献

The sudden eccentricity increases discovered by J. Wisdom (Astron J.87, 577–593, 1982) are reproduced in numerical integrations of the planar-elliptic restricted three-body problem, verifying that this phenomenon is real. Maximum Lyapunov characteristic exponents for trajectories near the commensurability are computed both with the mappings presented in Wisdom (1982) and by numerical integration of the planar-elliptic problem. In all cases the agreement is excellent, indicating that the mappings accurately reflect whether trajectories are chaotic or quasiperiodic. The mappings are used to trace out the chaotic zone near the commensurability, both in the planar-elliptic problem and to a more limited extent in the three-dimensional elliptic problem. The outer boundary of the chaotic zone coincides with the boundary of the Kirkwood gap in the actual distribution of asteroids within the errors of the asteroid orbital elements. 相似文献

In this paper we view the different practices of archaeology, anthropology, environmental reconstruction and geomorphology through the lens of fieldwork on the clitter fields and Bronze Age settlement patterns on Leskernick Hill, Bodmin Moor, southwest Britain. The moor forms one of the best preserved fossil prehistoric landscapes of Europe and has undergone repeated periglacial episodes during the Quaternary. We show that the characterisation of patterned ground by archaeologists and anthropologists can be very different from that generated by geomorphology, particularly with respect to the spatial scales at which culture/nature questions are posed. We argue that the research project at Leskernick is a good example of how multi-disciplinary work is often more fruitful than mono-disciplinary and provides an example of how conversations across the divides of disciplinary practice can be held. 相似文献

When spatial datasets are overlaid, corresponding features do not always coincide. This may be a result of the datasets having differing quality characteristics, being captured at different scales or perhaps being in different projections or datums. Data integration methods have been developed to bring such datasets into alignment. Although these methods attempt to maintain topological relationships within each dataset, spatial relationships between features in different datasets are generally not considered. The preservation of inter‐dataset topology is a research area of considerable current interest. This research addresses the preservation of topology within a data integration process. It describes the functional models established to represent a number of spatial relationships as observation equations. These are used to provide additional information concerning the relative positions of features. Since many topological relationships are best modelled as inequalities, an algorithm is developed to accommodate such relationships. The method, based on least squares with inequalities (LSI), is tested on simulated and real datasets. Results are presented to illustrate the optimal positioning solutions determined using all of the available information. In addition, updated quality parameters are provided at the level of the individual coordinate, enabling communication of local variation in the resultant quality of the integrated datasets. 相似文献
