When waves arrive obliquely to a coast they cause littoral drift, the fluctuations of which result in cycles of erosion and siltation. These are minimised when the resultant wave energy is normal to the beach as the longshore component of energy approaches zero. This situation occurs naturally when headlands exist and the shoreline between them is sculptured into zeta shaped bays with logarithmic spiral plan shape. Waves are then diffracted and refracted into the embayment, arriving at the beach more normally. There is a limiting erosive pattern, for the case of no further input of sediment, where the log spiral and indentation ratio reach values which are predictable. These can then be used to test the stability of that section of coast.  相似文献

We have obtained 40 high-resolution circular spectropolarimetric measurements of 12 slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars, eight β Cephei stars and two Be stars with the Echelle Spectropolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars at CFHT (ESPaDOnS) and Narval spectropolarimeters. The aim of these observations is to evaluate recent claims of a high incidence of magnetic field detections in stars of these types obtained using low-resolution spectropolarimetry by Hubrig et al. The precision achieved is generally comparable to or superior to that obtained by Hubrig et al., although our new observations are distinguished by their resolution of metallic and He line profiles, and their consequent sensitivity to magnetic fields of zero net longitudinal component. In the SPB stars, we confirm the detection of magnetic field in one star (16 Peg), but find no evidence of the presence of fields in the remaining 11. In the β Cep stars, we detect a field in  ξ1  CMa, but not in any of the remaining seven stars. Finally, neither of the two B-type emission-line stars shows any evidence of magnetic field. Based on our results, we conclude that fields are not common in SPB, β Cep and B-type emission-line stars, consistent with the general rarity of fields in the broader population of main sequence B-type stars. A relatively small, systematic underestimation of the error bars associated with the UV Focal Reducer and Low Dispersion Spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (FORS1) longitudinal field measurements of Hubrig et al. could in large part explain the discrepancy between their results and those presented here.  相似文献

The Geochemical Atlas of Slovak Republic (49,036 km2) at a scale of 1 : 1,000,000 was compiled during 1991–1995 together with maps of associated geochemical and ecological features at a scale of 1 :200,000. Investigations were aimed at the evaluation of concentrations and distributions of Al, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Ce, Co, Cd, Cs, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Sb, Se, Sn, Sr, Th, U, V, W, Y, Zn, Zr in groundwater (16,359 samples), stream sediments (24,422 samples), rocks (3839 samples), soils (9892 samples from 4946 profiles; A and C horizons of each profile were sampled) and forest biomass (the foliage of the forest tree species from 3063 plots was sampled). In groundwater field measurements of temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved O2, acidity, alkalinity were done. The evaluation was oriented to the natural radioactivity of the Slovak territory as follows: rocks (K, U, Th, Utot and dose rate, 15,573 reference spectrometric points), radon risk and water (Unat, 226Ra, 222Rn; 5271 samples). The main objective of the Geochemical Atlas was to construct single-component maps showing concentrations of chemical elements, compounds and measured parameters in the researched media of Slovakia at a scale of 1 : 1,000.000 and to create interactive databases of chemical composition and/or measured parameters of groundwater, biomass, rocks, soils, stream sediments and natural radioactivity, for the entire territory of the Slovak Republic. The single-component maps are not constructed in the part ‘Rocks’, where all the main rocks types of Slovakia are presented in the ‘Map of lithogeochemical rock types of Slovakia at a scale of 1: 500,000’. The edition of six atlases has been planned. In 1997 the first three atlases will appear (Groundwater, Biomass, Natural Radioactivity). Publishing of last three atlases (Rocks, Soils, Stream Sediments) is planned for 1998. Since the analytical works on stream sediments were finished during 1997, it was not possible to present here the results of that part of the Geochemical Atlas.  相似文献

Previous methods of determining the curved waterlines of bays which form on the coasts around the world have involved the logarithmic spiral. This has been applied to unstable bays which could erode back to a limit termed “static equilibrium” for which the constant in the spiral could be related to the obliquity of the wave crests to the control line, joining the upcoast headland to the downcoast extremity of the bay. It is shown that this applies mainly to the shadow zone behind the upcoast headland and not to the full bay periphery and does not have a fixed centre. A new method is proposed utilising arcs from the point of wave diffraction to the shoreline, whose lengths and angles to the wave crest line are related to those of the control line. Data and curves are presented for the static equilibrium shape by which the stability can be tested. They thus predict the waterline for the case of no sediment supply either from littoral drift or rivers debouching into the bay. An indentation ratio can also be derived to test stability.  相似文献
