Eighteen surface sediment samples representative of the entire Izmir Bay were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). This was in order to provide extensive information concerning the recent deposition of these compounds in this area, together with levels, distribution, possible sources and potential biological risk. Sites that were contaminated by high concentrations of organochlorine compounds were associated with dense population, such as the harbour and the Gediz River estuary. Relatively higher ΣDDT concentrations and high DDT/DDE + DDD ratios in the Gediz River estuary indicated DDT usage, probably linked to public health emergencies. According to the established guidelines for sediment quality, the risk of adverse biological effects from such levels of OCPs and PCBs as recorded at most of the study sites was insignificant. But the higher concentrations in Inner bay and in the Gediz River estuary could cause biological damage. 相似文献

Concentrations of dissolved metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Mn and Zn) were determined for summer and winter, under low-flow conditions in Port Jackson, a microtidal, well-mixed estuary in south-east Australia. Mean concentrations of Cd (0.04+/-0.02 microg/l), Ni (0.86+/-0.40 microg/l), Mn (20.0+/-25 microg/l) and Zn (6.47+/-2.0 microg/l) were below water quality guidelines. Concentrations of Cu (1.68+/-0.37 microg/l), however, slightly exceeded recommended values. Dissolved Ni and Mn behaved mostly conservatively, whereas Cd, Cu and Zn showed mid-estuarine maxima. Peaks in Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations were located in the upper estuary, independent of the salinity and suspended particulate matter loading, and were consistent with anthropogenic inputs of metals in the estuary. Concentrations of dissolved Cu were highest in summer, whereas concentrations of Cd, Ni and Mn were significantly lower in summer than winter (P< or =0.05). The increase in temperature and biological activity during summer explained the seasonal variation. The sequence of log K(d) values (20-30 salinity) was Mn>Zn>Cu>Ni. These results give unique information concerning the contemporaneous distribution of dissolved trace metals in the Port Jackson estuary and they provide a data set against which the long-term contamination may be assessed. 相似文献

Fish discards and by-catch issues are highly topical subjects that are permanently under a social focus. Two main approaches are being considered to address this discard problem: reducing the by-catch and increasing by-catch utilization. Interest in increased by-catch valorization may arise from a greater demand for fish products, such as the development of new markets for previously discarded species, the use of low-value specimens for aquaculture or the creation of value-added fish products for the food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries. However, contaminants present in fish discards may be transferred to their valorized products, leading to possible long-term bioaccumulation and subsequent adverse health effects. In this valorization framework, the aim is to promote responsible and sustainable management of marine resources. The pollutant levels in catches from European fisheries and the best available decontamination techniques for marine valorized discards/by-products are compiled and analyzed in this work. 相似文献

There has been a vast improvement in access to remotely sensed data in just a few recent years. This revolution of information is the result of heavy investment in new technology by governments and industry, rapid developments in computing power and storage, and easy dissemination of data over the internet. Today, remotely sensed data are available to virtually anyone with a desktop computer. Here, we review the status of one of the most popular areas of marine remote sensing research: coral reefs. Previous reviews have focused on the ability of remote sensing to map the structure and habitat composition of coral reefs, but have neglected to consider the physical environment in which reefs occur. We provide a holistic review of what can, might, and cannot be mapped using remote sensing at this time. We cover aspects of reef structure and health but also discuss the diversity of physical environmental data such as temperature, winds, solar radiation and water quality. There have been numerous recent advances in the remote sensing of reefs and we hope that this paper enhances awareness of the diverse data sources available, and helps practitioners identify realistic objectives for remote sensing in coral reef areas. 相似文献
