Simulation of large deformation and post‐failure of geomaterial in the framework of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) are presented in this study. The Drucker–Prager model with associated and non‐associated plastic flow rules is implemented into the SPH code to describe elastic–plastic soil behavior. In contrast to previous work on SPH for solids, where the hydrostatic pressure is often estimated from density by an equation of state, this study proposes to calculate the hydrostatic pressure of soil directly from constitutive models. Results obtained in this paper show that the original SPH method, which has been successfully applied to a vast range of problems, is unable to directly solve elastic–plastic flows of soil because of the so‐called SPH tensile instability. This numerical instability may result in unrealistic fracture and particles clustering in SPH simulation. For non‐cohesive soil, the instability is not serious and can be completely removed by using a tension cracking treatment from soil constitutive model and thereby give realistic soil behavior. However, the serious tensile instability that is found in SPH application for cohesive soil requires a special treatment to overcome this problem. In this paper, an artificial stress method is applied to remove the SPH numerical instability in cohesive soil. A number of numerical tests are carried out to check the capability of SPH in the current application. Numerical results are then compared with experimental and finite element method solutions. The good agreement obtained from these comparisons suggests that SPH can be extended to general geotechnical problems. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In association with the large solar flare of April 15, 2001, the Chacaltaya neutron monitor observed a 3.6σ enhancement of the counting rate between 13:51 and 14:15 UT. Since the enhancement was observed beginning 11 min before the GLE, solar neutrons must be involved in this enhancement. The integral energy spectrum of solar neutrons can be expressed by a simple power law in energy with the index γ=-3.0±1.0. On the other hand, an integral energy spectrum of solar protons has been obtained in the energy range between 650 MeV and 12 GeV. The spectrum can also be expressed by a power law with the power index γ=-2.75±0.15. The flux of solar protons observed at Chacaltaya (at 12 GeV) was already one order less than the flux of the galactic cosmic rays. It may be the first simultaneous observation of the energy spectra of both high-energy protons and neutrons. Comparing the Yohkoh soft X-ray telescope images with the observed particle time profiles, an interesting picture of the particle acceleration mechanism has been deduced.  相似文献

From a list of X-ray jets made by Shimojo et al. (1996), we selected events for which there were magnetic field data from NSO/Kitt Peak. Using co-aligned SXT and magnetograms, we examined the magnetic field properties of X-ray jets. We found that 8% of the jets studied occurred at a single pole (SP), 12% at a bipole (BP), 24% in a mixed polarity (MP) and 48% in a satellite polarity (ST). If the satellite polarity region is the same as the mixed polarity region, 72% of the jets occurred at the (general) mixed polarity region. We also investigated the magnetic evolution of jet-producing areas in active regions NOAA 7067, NOAA 7270, and NOAA 7858. It is found that X-ray jets favored regions of evolving magnetic flux (increasing or decreasing).  相似文献

ASTRI SST-2M is one of the prototypes of the small size class of telescopes proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array. Its optical design is based on a dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder configuration, and the camera is composed by a matrix of monolithic multipixel silicon photomultipliers managed by ad-hoc tailored front-end electronics. This paper describes the procedures for the gain calibration on the ASTRI SST-2M. Since the SiPM gain depends on the operative voltage and the temperature, we adjust the operative voltages for all sensors to have equal gains at a reference temperature. We then correct gain variations caused by temperature changes by adjusting the operating voltage of each sensor. For that purpose the SiPM gain dependence on operating voltage and on temperature have been measured. In addition, we present the calibration procedures and the results of the experimental measurements to evaluate, for each pixel, the parameters necessary to make the trigger uniform over the whole focal plane.  相似文献

We present a spicule model whose eruption occurs as a result of the sudden pressure enhancement at the bright point located at the root of the spicule. To show this, one dimensional (constant cross sectional) and time dependent hydrodynamic equations are solved numerically in the realistic solar atmosphere extending from the photosphere to the corona. Adiabatic motion is assumed. The pressure enhancement by a bright point at the base of the model atmosphere generates a shock wave. The shock gets stronger as it passes upward through the chromosphere and eventually collides with the chromosphere-corona interface which is a kind of a contact discontinuity. As the result, the interface begins to move upward. We identify the matter following behind this interface as the solar spicule. The model explains many observed features, such as the height and the density of the spicules, although such features have been hitherto considered not to be explained easily by shock theories.  相似文献

Sorption isotherms, time-dependent adsorption and surface complexation modeling studies were used to investigate the post-depositional mobility of three of the platinum group-elements (Pd, Rh, and Pt) in semi-arid soil and sediment samples with varying surface properties. The acidity constants (Log Ka1 and Log Ka2), optimized from batch titration data, ranged from 4.69 to 5.34 for Log Ka1 and from −6.51 to −7.61 for Log Ka2, suggesting the occurrence of both protonation and deprotonation reactions on the solid surfaces. Partition coefficients and removal rates of the metals had a general trend of Pd > Pt > Rh. The sediment sample, with the highest clay content and exchangeable cation concentrations, also had the highest affinity for the metals. The times required for sediment to adsorb 63% of the metals were 2.63 h, 4.08 h and 10.64 h for Pd, Pt and Rh, respectively. The FITEQL program successfully optimized the conditional binding constants of the metals on the solids from batch adsorption data. The constants decreased in the order of Pd > Rh > Pt, which was consistent with the observed high affinity of the solids for Pd. The modeling results also showed that aqueous Pd was the least sensitive to pH followed by Rh and Pt. However, metal adsorption below the points of zero net proton charges (ca. pH 6.7) is attributable to the involvement of permanent negatively charged binding sites in the adsorption process. Notably, partition coefficients, removal rates and conditional binding constants all showed a high affinity of Pd for the solids. A similarity between the model outputs and the batch adsorption data indicates the suitability of the model for describing the mobility and retention of the three metals in semi-arid soils and sediments.  相似文献

This article addresses the importance and meanings of formal and informal social support relationships and neighbourhood ties for older adults ‘ageing in place’ in urban neighbourhoods in two different welfare state settings: Portland (Oregon, the United States) and Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The rising number of people growing old(er) in urban environments raises new demands and pressing challenges for urban development. The majority of older adults are and will be ageing in their homes and communities, as opposed to institutionalized care facilities and settings. At the same time, the provision of formal and public care is being increasingly challenged by government cutbacks. On top of this, the formerly strong welfare states in many European countries have weakened. In-depth interviews with 40 older adults and key informants in two neighbourhoods in each city provide the empirical basis for this study. In Portland, there are widespread local civic initiatives related to care provision for older adults. The city has a long tradition both of individual responsibility and community culture, which has emerged from and appears to compensate for the overall lack of state services and support. Amsterdam has a long tradition of state provision, but is experiencing a policy shift towards a stronger reliance on private market-led services, and an emphasis on family and community as providers of support. Although a few emerging local initiatives for elderly care in Amsterdam were identified, it is unclear whether this form of community support can compensate for decreasing state provision in Amsterdam. This study raises concerns about the future of care provision for older adults living in unsupportive urban neighbourhoods, without financial resources or nearby relatives.  相似文献
