Single crystal (U‐Th)/He dating has been undertaken on 21 detrital zircon grains extracted from a core sample from Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) site 1073, which is located ~390 km northeast of the center of the Chesapeake Bay impact structure. Optical and electron imaging in combination with energy dispersive X‐ray microanalysis (EDS) of zircon grains from this late Eocene sediment shows clear evidence of shock metamorphism in some zircon grains, which suggests that these shocked zircon crystals are distal ejecta from the formation of the ~40 km diameter Chesapeake Bay impact structure. (U‐Th/He) dates for zircon crystals from this sediment range from 33.49 ± 0.94 to 305.1 ± 8.6 Ma (2σ), implying crystal‐to‐crystal variability in the degree of impact‐related resetting of (U‐Th)/He systematics and a range of different possible sources. The two youngest zircon grains yield an inverse‐variance weighted mean (U‐Th)/He age of 33.99 ± 0.71 Ma (2σ uncertainties n = 2; mean square weighted deviation = 2.6; probability [P] = 11%), which is interpreted to be the (U‐Th)/He age of formation of the Chesapeake Bay impact structure. This age is in agreement with K/Ar, 40Ar/39Ar, and fission track dates for tektites from the North American strewn field, which have been interpreted as associated with the Chesapeake Bay impact event.  相似文献

Volcanic-associated massive sulphide deposits in the Snow Lake area of Manitoba are related to mineralogically and chemically distinct alteration zones. It is generally accepted that these zones represent crosscutting, subconformable or conformable synvolcanic alteration zones, which were coeval with and have been metamorphosed with the massive sulphides. Metamorphism ranges from upper greenschist facies to middle amphibolite facies. Surface lithogeochemical anomalies led to the discovery of small massive sulphide lenses at a vertical depth of 250 m in the Raindrop Lake area, southwest of Snow Lake, Manitoba. Variations in mineral assemblages of middle amphibolite facies alteration zones and analysis of variations in major and trace element chemistry were used to guide deep drilling at Raindrop Lake. The massive sulphide lenses are stratigraphically underlain by a low angle crosscutting “pipe” and a conformable footwall “apron” alteration.The alteration zones are composed of assemblages of garnet, staurolite and chlorite, and, less significantly, biotite, muscovite and kyanite. They are characterized by loss of Na and Ca, and addition of Fe, Mg, Cu and Zn. Mapping the alteration is aided by the application of the metamorphic AFM phase diagram for the appropriate metamorphic facies. Increasing intensity of alteration can be identified by the first appearance of new mineral phases, which are represented on the AFM diagram. These mineral trends coincide with loss of Na and Ca relative to Al, and increased Mg and Fe. Chemical alteration indices ACNK (molecular proportion Al2O3/(CaO + Na2O + K2O) and AI = 100 × [(MgO + K2O)/(MgO + K2O + CaO + Na2O)] combined with Cu and Zn variation helped to quantify the intensity of alteration, despite being insensitive to Fe.The crosscutting pipe is dominantly Fe enriched, with a Cu-enriched core, Zn enriched margins and widespread Na and Ca depletion. Mineralogically it is identified by garnet, staurolite and chlorite and follows an iron and aluminum enrichment trend on the AFM diagram. The conformable alteration zone is characterized by local strong Mg enrichment, extensive Na and Ca depletion and variable Cu and Zn. Mineralogically it is characterized by the presence of chlorite and kyanite and follows a magnesium and aluminum enrichment trend on the AFM diagram.  相似文献

Tholeiitic basalt glasses from the FAMOUS area of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge are among the most primitive basaltic liquids reported from the ocean basins. One of the more primitive of these[Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) = 0.68;Ni= 232ppm;TiO2 = 0.61] glasses (572-1-1) was selected for an experimental investigation. This study found olivine to be the liquidus phase from 1 atm to 10.5 kbar where it is replaced by clinopyroxene. The sequence of appearance of phases at 1 atm pressure is olivine (1268°C), plagioclase (1235°C) and clinopyroxene (1135°C). The sample is multiply saturated at 10.5 kbar with olivine (Fo88), clinopyroxene (Wo32En60Fs9), and orthopyroxene (Wo5En83Fs12). From the 1-atm data we have measured (FeO/MgO) olivine/(FeO*/MgO) liquid (K′D) for olivine-melt pairs equilibrated at 12 temperatures in the range 1268–1205°C.K′D varies from 0.30 at 1205°C to 0.27 at 1268°C. Analysis of high-pressure olivine melt pairs indicates a systematic increase inK′D with pressure.Evaluation of the 1-atm experiments reveals that fractionation of olivine followed by olivine + plagioclase can generate much of the variation in major element chemistry observed in the FAMOUS basalt glasses. However, it cannot account for the entire spectrum of glass compositions — particularly with respect to TiO2 and Na2O. The variations in these components are such as to require different primary liquids.Comparison of clinopyroxene microphenocrysts/xenocrysts found in oceanic tholeiites with experimental clinopyroxenes reveal that the majority of those in the tholeiites may have crystallized from the magma at pressures greater than ~ 10 kbar and are not accidental xenocrysts. Clinopyroxene fractionation at high pressures may be a viable mechanism for fractionating basaltic magmas.The major and minor element mineral/meltK′d's from our experiments have been used to model the source region residual mineralogy for given percentages of partial melting. These data suggest that ~20% partial melting of a lherzolite source containing 0–10% clinopyroxene can generate the major and minor element concentrations in the parental magmas of the Project FAMOUS basalt glasses.  相似文献

The region including the Aristarchus Plateau and Montes Harbinger is probably the most diverse, geologically, of any area of comparble size on the Moon. This part of the northwest quadrant of the lunar near side includes unique dark mantling material; both the densest concentration and the largest of the sinuous rilles; apparent volcanic vents, sinks, and domes; mare materials of various ages and colors; one of the freshest large craters (Aristarchus) with ejecta having unique colors and albedos; and three other large craters in different states of flooding and degradation (krieger, Herodotus, and Prinz). The three best-authenticated lunar transient phenomena were also observed here.This study is based principally on photographic and remote sensing observations made from Earth and Apollo orbiting space craft. Results include (1) delineation of geologic map units and their stratigraphic relationships; (2) discussion of the complex interrelationships between materials of volcanic and impact origin, including the effects of excavation, redistribution and mixing of previously deposited materials by younger impact craters; (3) deduction of physical and chemical properties of certain of the geologic units, based on both the remote-sensing information and on extrapolation of Apollo data to this area; and (4) development of a detailed geologic history of the region, outlining the probable sequence of events that resulted in its present appearance.A primary concern of the investigation has been anomalous red dark mantle on the Plateau. Based on an integration of Earth- and lunar orbit-based data, this layer seems to consist of fine-grained, block-free material containing a relatively large fraction of orange glass. It is probably of pyroclastic origin, laid down at some time during the Imbrian period of mare flooding.  相似文献

Measurements of40Ar and helium made by the Apollo 17 lunar surface mass-spectrometer are used in the synthesis of atmospheric supply and loss mechanisms. The argon data indicate that about 8% of the40Ar produced in the Moon due to decay of40K is released to the atmosphere and subsequently lost. Variability of the atmospheric abundance of argon requires that the source be localized, probably in an unfractionated, partially molten core. If so, the radiogenic helium released with the argon amounts to 10% of the atmospheric helium supply. The total rate of helium escape from the Moon accounts for only 60% of the solar windα particle influx. This seems to require a nonthermal escape mechanism for trapped solar-wind gases, probably involving weathering of exposed soil grain surfaces by solar wind protons.  相似文献

In contrast to earth, the atmosphere of the moon is exceedingly tenuous and appears to consist mainly of noble gases. The solar wind impinges on the lunar surface, supplying detectable amounts of helium, neon and 36Ar. Influxes of solar wind protons and carbon and nitrogen ions are significant, but atmospheric gases containing these elements have not been positively identified. Radiogenic 40Ar and 222Rn produced within the moon have been detected. The present rate of effusion of argon from the moon accounts for about 0.4% of the total production of 40Ar due to decay of 40K if the average abundance of potassium in the moon is 1000 ppm. Lack of weathering processes in the regolith suggests that most of the atmospheric 40Ar originates deep in the lunar interior, perhaps in a partially molten core. If so, other gases may be vented along with the argon.  相似文献

Increased tidal levels and storm surges related to climate change are projected to result in extremely adverse effects on coastal regions. Predictions of such extreme and small-scale events, however, are exceedingly challenging, even for relatively short time horizons. Here we use data from observations, ERA-40 re-analysis, climate scenario simulations, and a simple feature model to find that the frequency of extreme storm surge events affecting Venice is projected to decrease by about 30% by the end of the twenty-first century. In addition, through a trend assessment based on tidal observations we found a reduction in extreme tidal levels. Extrapolating the current +17 cm/century sea level trend, our results suggest that the frequency of extreme tides in Venice might largely remain unaltered under the projected twenty-first century climate simulations.  相似文献

Data reported in 40Ar/39Ar geochronology studies are commonly insufficient to allow computation of ages. This deficiency renders it difficult to compare ages based on different standards or constants, and often hinders critical evaluation of the results. Herein are presented an enumeration of the data that should be reported in all 40Ar/39Ar studies, including a discussion in support of these requirements. The minimum required data are identified and distinguished from parameters that are useful but may be derived from them by calculation. Finally, recommendations are made for metadata needed to document age calculations (e.g., from age spectrum or isochron analyses).  相似文献
