Problems with the interpretation of the 220 nm interstellar feature

The bump in the ultraviolet part of the interstellar extinction curve provides a great challenge in the modelling of interstellar dust. Its shape can be well approximated by a classical dispersion profile with a total halfwidth of 48 nm centred at 217 nm. Apart from few slightly deviating cases the parameters of the band seem to be surprisingly constant in the solar neighbourhood.The equivalent widthW of the 217 nm band shows a very tight correlation with the colour excessE(B-V). Studies of correlations with the strength of diffuse interstellar bands gave no conclusive results as to the nature of the band.The most common interpretation of the 217 nm feature as originating from small graphite grians meets several difficulties. No final decision on the carrier can be made at present.Paper presented at a Workshop on The Role of Dust in Dense Regions of Interstellar Matter, held at Georgenthal, G.D.R., in March 1986.     

High resolution gravimetric geoid heights and gravimetric vertical deflections of Europe including marine areas

Gravimetric geoid heights and gravimetric vertical deflections have been detemined for Europe including the Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, Baltic Sea and parts of the North Atlantic Ocean in a 12′×20′ grid. The computation has been carried out by least squares spectral combination using closed integral formulas, combining 104 000 mean free air gravity anomalies in 6′×10′ blocks, 12 000 mean free air gravity anomalies in 1⁰×1⁰ blocks and the sherical harmonic model GEM9. The precision of the computed geoid heights has been estimated to ±1 m, the precision of the computed vertical deflections has been estimated to ±2″. Comparisons of the gravimetric geoid heights and vertical deflections with a number of other solutions have been carried out, confirming the precision estimation.     

On the influence of adequate Weddell Sea characteristics in a large-scale global ocean circulation model

Global ocean circulation models usually lack an adequate consideration of high-latitude processes due to a limited model domain or insufficient resolution. Without the processes in key areas of the global thermohaline circulation, the characteristics and flow of deep and bottom waters cannot be modeled realistically. In this study, a high-resolution (~20 km) ocean model focused on the Weddell Sea sector of the Southern Ocean is combined with a low-resolution (2^° × 2^°) global ocean model applying the state estimation technique. Temperature, salinity, and velocity data on two Weddell Sea sections from the regional model are used as constraints for the large-scale model in addition to satellite altimetry and sea-surface temperatures. The differences between the model with additional constraints and without document that the Weddell Sea circulation exerts significant influence on the course of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current with consequences for Southern Ocean water mass characteristics and the spreading of deep and bottom waters in the South Atlantic. Furthermore, a warming trend in the period 1993–2001 was found in the Weddell Sea and adjacent basins in agreement with float measurements in the upper Southern Ocean. Teleconnections to the North Atlantic are suggested but need further studies to demonstrate their statistical significance.     

Silicon carbide and the infrared excess of carbon stars

This paper reports laboratory investigations on the absorption spectrum of SiC particles in the 10 μm region. The particles had a mean diameter of 0.31 μm. Our experimental results indicate that a large part of the infrared excess observed in carbon stars may be caused by SiC.     

Integration of stress testing with graph theory to assess the resilience of urban road networks under seismic hazards

Transportation networks daily provide accessibility and crucial services to societies. However, they must also maintain an acceptable level of service to critical infrastructures in the case of disruptions, especially during natural disasters. We have developed a method for assessing the resilience of transportation network topology when exposed to environmental hazards. This approach integrates graph theory with stress testing methodology and involves five basic steps: (1) establishment of a scenario set that covers a range of seismic damage potential in the network, (2) assessment of resilience using various graph-based metrics, (3) topology-based simulations, (4) evaluation of changes in graph-based metrics, and (5) examination of resilience in terms of spatial distribution of critical nodes and the entire network topology. Our case study was from the city of Kathmandu in Nepal, where the earthquake on April 25, 2015, followed by a major aftershock on May 12, 2015, led to numerous casualties and caused significant damage. Therefore, it is a good example for demonstrating and validating the developed methodology. The results presented here indicate that the proposed approach is quite efficient and accurate in assisting stakeholders when evaluating the resilience of transportation networks based on their topology.     

On the period changes of RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster M3

O – C diagrams of 78 RR Lyrae variables of the years 1963 to 1978 were used to investigate their comparability with the diagrams of 1895 to 1963. Only 5% have been proved to show a fundamentally deviating trend of the period change.     

Influence of rotational darkening on ultraviolet interstellar extinction

Der Einfluß der Rotationsverdunklung schnell rotierender Sterne wird einer Neudiskussion unterzogen. Dafür werden filterphotometrische Helligkeiten vom Satelliten ANS herangezogen. Von schwach verfärbten B Sternen (E(B - V) 0.1 mag) wurden die Helligkeiten vom Einfluß der interstellaren Extinktion befreit. Die Verleilung der Sterne im Rotationsgeschwindigkeits-Farbenindex-Diagramm weist eine Streuung auf, die den Betrag der photometrischen Fehler übersteigt. Die Lage der Sterne im Rotationsgeschwindigkeits-Farbenindex-Diagramm befindet sich in qualitativer Übereinstimmung mit entsprechenden theoretischen Resultaten. Bei der Diskussion von individuell abweichenden Verläufen der interstellaren Extinktion vom durchschnittlichen Extinktionsgesetz sollte der Einfluß der Rotationsverdunklung als eine mögliche Quelle für die Abweichungen in Betracht gezogen und geprüft werden.     

The interstellar 2200 Å band: A second catalogue of equivalent widths and preliminary statistical analysis (Mitteilungen der Universitäts-Sternwarte zu Jena Nr. 162)

A second catalogue of equivalent widths of the interstellar 2200 Å band is presented. It is based on spectrophotometric data obtained with the TD-1 satellite and supplements a catalogue already published (paper I). Both catalogues list a total of 779 stars. The reliability of the derived parameters is analysed. There is a satisfying agreement with spectrophotometric data obtained with the OAO-2 satellite. The relationship between the equivalent width of the 2200-Å band and and the colour excess is discussed, making use of additional data for more strongly reddened stars obtained with OAO-2 and IUE.     

The Black Forest Observatory, Schiltach

The purpose of the geoscientific Observatory at Schiltach in the Black Forest in SW-Germany is to measure and monitor motions and deformations of the earth in a frequency band as broad as possible. The spectrum of geodynamic signal contains

• - the short period waves (up to 40 Hz) of near earthquakes,

• - the longer period body and surface waves from teleseismic events,

• - the free oscillations of the earth excited by giant earthquakes,

• - the earth tide deformations caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun having periods of 12 h and longer,

• - deformations of the earth in a wide period range from other sources (e.g. atmosphere).

Besides providing high quality data with some continuity using ‘standard’ sensors, the observatory must be considered as an experimental station and research facility where new instruments and techniques can be tested.
