The Quesnel Lake area lies within the Omineca Crystalline Belt,and is underlain by the northern extremity of the Shuswap MetamorphicComplex. Closely spaced and steeply dipping isograds mark themargins of the metamorphic belt. In the Penfold Creek area onlyone and one-half miles separate the biotite and sillimaniteisograds. Related to this sharp increase in metamorphic gradethere is a marked change in the fold style. In the chloritezone are similar folds, showing a strong axial-plane cleavage,and tight refolded isoclines dominate in the sillimanite zone.Three periods of deformation and two periods of prograde metamorphismhave been recognized, with the first metamorphic period beingassociated with Phase 2 deformation and the second being post-Phase2. Regression analysis of possible mineral reactions in these rocksshows that they formed under conditions of a gradient in temperatureand possibly H2O activity, and that most of the assemblages,although containing many phases, have at least two degrees offreedom. Thermodynamic analysis of mineral equilibria indicatesthat equilibrium was closely approached between solid solutionsinvolving garnet, plagioclase, biotite, white mica, and staurolitein the presence of Al2SiO5, quartz, and H2O. The conditionsof metamorphism of rocks containing Al2SiO5 are estimated tobe 7000 ± 1500 bars, 680 ± 30 °C, activityof H2O = 0.80 (approx.). Abstract— This paper describes the coordinated results of several sets of measurements of two Leonid meteor fireballs over northern New Mexico at 1:32 and 3:06 MST, respectively, on the night of 1998 November 17. The measurements included visible band photometry on both events, as well as filtered 5890 Å all-sky images of the Na airglow. Also, for the 3:06 a.m. event, we obtained an infrasound measurement of the hydrodynamic yield. For the 1:32 a.m. event, we obtained a set of visible band charge-coupled device (CCD) camera images of the meteor train for times extending to 30 min after the initial impact. The measurement results have been combined to derive an optical efficiency for the intense early-time optical flash, and the total explosion yields and masses for both of the meteors. We have also done a set of numerical radiation, hydrodynamic, and chemistry computations to investigate the nature and distribution of the long-lasting airglow. We attribute the brightest visible airglow to atomic O 5577 Å line emission, with additional contributions from atomic Na emission and NO2 chemiluminescence. The near-infrared atmospheric bands of molecular O2 should be very strong as well. All of the band emissions are expected to show a hollow limb-brightened structure.  相似文献

基于变形分解理论提出的面理弯切轴测量技术,通过对变斑晶中多期面理的测定分析,为厘定造山运动中的变形过程提供了新的精确定量研究手段。面理弯切轴数据已经被用于解决地质领域多种问题,例如:研究造山运动过程中变形变质历史以及在区域和造山带尺度对比多期变质作用;论证变斑晶生长过程是否发生旋转;变斑晶成核生长与区域变形过程之间的关系;重建板块运动历史过程;约束不同地质事件的发生时限;划分复杂变形分解类型以及岩浆侵位机制及时限研究。本文主要介绍面理弯切轴测量方法的原理、具体测定方法、研究意义及应用范围,并以美国阿肯色地区为例,详细介绍了面理弯切轴测量技术在造山运动过程区域变形历史重建中的应用。  相似文献

In situ SHRIMP U–Pb geochronology of monazite and xenotime in pelitic schists from the central Gascoyne Complex, Western Australia, shows that greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphism occurred between c. 1030 and c. 990 Ma. Monazite from an undeformed rare‐element pegmatite from the same belt gives a 207Pb/206Pb age of c. 950 Ma, suggesting that peak metamorphism and deformation was followed by pegmatite intrusion and coeval granite magmatism. Metamorphism in the central Gascoyne Complex was previously interpreted as Barrovian, largely based on the identification of kyanite in peak metamorphic assemblages, and has been attributed to intense crustal shortening and substantial tectonic thickening during Palaeoproterozoic continent–continent collision. However, the stable Al2SiO5 polymorph has been identified in this study as andalusite rather than kyanite, and the prograde assemblages of staurolite–garnet–andalusite–biotite–muscovite–quartz indicate temperatures of 500–550 °C and pressures of 3–4 kbar. These data show that the Palaeoproterozoic Gascoyne Complex underwent an episode of Grenvillian‐aged intracontinental reworking concentrated in a NW–SE striking corridor, during the Edmundian Orogeny. Until now, the Edmundian Orogeny was thought to have involved only reactivation of structures in the Gascoyne Complex, along with deformation and very low‐ to low‐grade metamorphism of Mesoproterozoic cover rocks some time between 1070 and 755 Ma. However, we suggest that it involved regional amphibolite facies metamorphism and deformation, granite magmatism and pegmatite intrusion between c. 1030 and c. 950 Ma. Therefore, the Capricorn Orogen experienced a major phase of tectonic reworking c. 600 Myr later than previously recognized. Our results emphasize the importance of in situ geochronology integrated with petrological studies in order to link the metamorphic history of a terrane with causally related tectonic events.  相似文献

An ≈ 26 m thick unit of phosphatic sandstone and black shale (the Phosphatic Unit) in the Palaeoproterozoic Mount Barren Group of south-western Australia contains abundant authigenic xenotime crystals showing well-preserved diagenetic textures. Despite extensive regional deformation and thermal metamorphism, the peak of which occurred at ≈ 1205 Ma, the Phosphatic Unit was preserved as a low-strain envelope because of its pre-compaction carbonate and phosphate cementation. In situ U–Pb geochronology of xenotime reveals four discrete age populations at 1693 ± 4, 1645 ± 3, 1578 ± 10 and 1481 ± 21 Ma. When integrated with petrography, the age data place a timeframe on: (i) sediment deposition; (ii) phosphogenesis; (iii) diagenetic cement infilling; (iv) diagenetic pyrite formation; (v) secondary porosity generation; (vi) hydrocarbon migration; (vii) burial compaction; and (viii) hydrothermal alteration, up until peak thermal metamorphism. Xenotime growth at ≈ 1693 Ma occurred prior to compaction, whereas xenotime growth at ≈ 1645 Ma occurred during burial. Xenotime growth at ≈ 1580 Ma and at ≈ 1480 Ma appears to be the far-field record of thermotectonic events associated with intracontinental extension and magmatism recorded elsewhere in Australia. Geochemical analysis, integrated with geochronology, shows a systematic increase in MREE/HREE in xenotime crystals with decreasing age and with increasing stratigraphic depth. Coupled with a decrease in xenotime abundance and age with depth, it suggests that: (i) the main focus of porosity infilling was at the top of the Phosphatic Unit and progressed downwards over the > 200 Myr period of porosity infilling, and (ii) the changes in xenotime REE chemistry may be due to an influx of MREE from increasing amounts of dissolved apatite or changes, with respect to REE solubility, in the physiochemical nature of the fluids with burial depth.  相似文献

Tasmania's montane temperate rainforests contain some of Australia's most ancient and endemic flora. Recent landscape‐scale fires have impacted a significant portion of these rainforest ecosystems. The complex and rugged topography of Tasmania results in a highly variable influence of fire across the landscape, rendering predictions of ecosystem response to fire difficult. We assess the role of topographic variation in buffering the influence of fire in these endemic rainforest communities. We developed a new 14 000‐year (14‐ka) palaeoecological dataset from Lake Perry, southern Tasmania, and compared it to neighbouring Lake Osborne (<250 m distant) to examine how topographic variations influence fire and vegetation dynamics through time. Repeated fire events during the Holocene cause a decline in montane rainforest taxa at both sites; however, in the absence of fire, rainforest taxa are able to recover. Montane temperate rainforest taxa persisted at Lake Perry until European settlement, whilst these taxa were driven locally extinct and replaced by Eucalyptus species at Lake Osborne after 2.5 ka. Contiguous topographic fire refugia within the Lake Perry catchment probably provided areas of favourable microclimates that discouraged fire spread and supported the recovery of these montane temperate rainforests. A similar succession of Foliation Inflection/Intersection Axis (FIAs) trends preserved within porphyroblasts is present in two areas separated by 200 km along the Rocky Mountains. The Precambrian rocks in Central Colorado and Northern New Mexico were affected by deformation and metamorphism from ~1506 to 1366 Ma. A succession of five FIAs trending W–E, SSW–NNE, NNW–SSE, NW–SE and WSW–ENE is distinguished in Central Colorado and dated at 1506 ± 15 Ma, 1467 ± 23 Ma, 1425 ± 18 Ma, not dated and 1366 ± 20 Ma respectively. To the south in Northern New Mexico, a succession of five FIAs trending SSW–NNE, WNW–ESE, NNW–SSE, NW–SE and WSW–ENE is distinguished and dated at 1482 ± 48 Ma, 1448 ± 12 Ma, 1422 ± 35 Ma, not dated and 1394 ± 22 Ma. The excellent correlation of the sequence of FIA trends and their ages between regions reveals a sixfold‐FIA succession across the region with the first developed FIA set in Central Colorado not present in Northern New Mexico and the third FIA set in the region not present in Central Colorado. Preferential partitioning of W–E trending deformation into the Central Colorado region ~1506 ± 15 Ma was followed by SSW–NNE trending deformation that affected both regions at 1470 ± 20 Ma. However, preferential partitioning of WNW–ESE trending deformation into Northern New Mexico at 1448 ± 12 Ma left Central Colorado unaffected. Both regions were then affected by the three remaining periods of orogenesis, the first trending NNW–SSE at 1424 ± 15 Ma followed by one trending NW–SE that has not yet been dated, and then one trending WSW–ENE at 1390 ± 19 Ma. This suggests that the Yavapai terrane was tectonized at ~1506 Ma, prior to amalgamation with the Mazatzal terrane ~1470 Ma. Subsequent orogenesis was initially partitioned preferentially into the Mazatzal terrane, but the following three periods of tectonism affected both terranes in a similar manner.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper describes a framework for the role of geographical information systems (GIS) in the monitoring and management of hazardous waste sites. Compilation of required information, incorporation of existing strategies for waste monitoring, analysis of these data in a GIS environment and the integration of computerized models for transport processes are discussed. Examples for the analysis of spatial data using techniques of cartographic overlay and the implementation of geo-statistical methods on monitoring data are provided from work in progress by the authors. These examples are set in the context of developing a fully integrated monitoring and management system utilizing GIS technology.  相似文献

We model the behaviour of particles in and around X-type magnetic configurations, a possible solar flare reconnection geometry. Particles are accelerated by a time-varying electric field close to the neutral point, and followed by integrating the equations of motion. When their motion becomes adiabatic a stochastic simulation is used to model their further transport in a collisional magnetised medium.  相似文献
