We have observed the energetic binary Cygnus X-3 in both quiescent and flaring states between 4 and 16 μm using the ISO satellite. We find that the quiescent source shows the thermal free–free spectrum typical of a hot, fast stellar wind, such as from a massive helium star. The quiescent mass-loss rate arising from a spherically symmetric, non-accelerating wind is found to be in the range (0.4–2.9)×10−4 M⊙ yr−1 , consistent with other infrared and radio observations, but considerably larger than the 10−5 M⊙ yr−1 deduced from both the orbital change and the X-ray column density. There is rapid, large-amplitude flaring at 4.5 and 11.5 μm at the same time as enhanced radio and X-ray activity, with the infrared spectrum apparently becoming flatter in the flaring state. We believe that non-thermal processes are operating, perhaps along with enhanced thermal emission. 相似文献

Six CAM observations have been made in the 4 - 14 μm wavelength region to search for further evidence of emission from a hot
stellar wind. Initial results suggest that the spectrum detected by Fender et al. using UKIRT extends into the wavelength
region covered by ISOCAM. There is also evidence that the source is variable on timescales of ≈ 70 seconds.

Since 1991, Mississippi River water has been diverted at Caernarvon, Louisiana, into Breton Sound estuary. Breton Sound estuary encompasses 1100 km2 of fresh and brackish, rapidly subsiding wetlands. Nitrite + nitrate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonium, total phosphorus, total suspended sediments, and salinity concentrations were monitored at seven locations in Breton Sound from 1988 to 1994. Statistical analysis of the data indicated decreased total Kjeldahl nitrogen with associated decrease in total nitrogen, and decreased salinity concentrations in the estuary due to the diversion. Spring and summer water quality transects indicated rapid reduction of nitrite + nitrate and total suspended sediment concentration as diverted Mississippi River water entered the estuary, suggesting near complete assimilation of these constituents by the ecosystem. Loading rates of nitrite + nitrate (5.6–13.4 g m−2 yr−1), total nitrogen (8.9–23.4 g m−2 yr−1), and total phosphorus (0.9–2.0 g m−2 yr−1) were calculated along with removal efficiencies for these constituents (nitrite + nitrate 88–97%; total nitrogen 32–57%; total phosphorus 0–46%). The low impact of the diversion on water quality in the Breton Sound estuary, along with assimilation of TSS over a very short distance, suggests that more water may be introduced into the estuary without detrimental affects. This would be necessary if freshwater diversions are to be used to distribute nitrients and sediments into the lower reaches of the estuary, in an effort to compensate for relative sea-level rise, and reverse the current trend of rapid loss of wetlands in coastal Louisiana. 相似文献

An exact, closed‐form analytical solution is derived for one‐dimensional (1D), coupled, steady‐state advection‐dispersion equations with sequential first‐order degradation of three dissolved species in groundwater. Dimensionless and mathematical analyses are used to examine the sensitivity of longitudinal dispersivity in the parent and daughter analytical solutions. The results indicate that the relative error decreases to less than 15% for the 1D advection‐dominated and advection‐dispersion analytical solutions of the parent and daughter when the Damköhler number of the parent decreases to less than 1 (slow degradation rate) and the Peclet number increases to greater than 6 (advection‐dominated). To estimate first‐order daughter product rate constants in advection‐dominated zones, 1D, two‐dimensional (2D), and three‐dimensional (3D) steady‐state analytical solutions with zero longitudinal dispersivity are also derived for three first‐order sequentially degrading compounds. The closed form of these exact analytical solutions has the advantage of having (1) no numerical integration or evaluation of complex‐valued error function arguments, (2) computational efficiency compared to problems with long times to reach steady state, and (3) minimal effort for incorporation into spreadsheets. These multispecies analytical solutions indicate that BIOCHLOR produces accurate results for 1D steady‐state, applications with longitudinal dispersion. Although BIOCHLOR is inaccurate in multidimensional applications with longitudinal dispersion, these multidimensional multispecies analytical solutions indicate that BIOCHLOR produces accurate steady‐state results when the longitudinal dispersion is zero. As an application, the 1D advection‐dominated analytical solution is applied to estimate field‐scale rate constants of 0.81, 0.74, and 0.69/year for trichloroethene, cis‐1,2‐dichloroethene, and vinyl chloride, respectively, at the Harris Palm Bay, FL, CERCLA site. 相似文献

We have observed a number of minor radio flares in Cyg X-3 using the MERLIN array. Photometric observations show the system to be highly active with multiple flares on hourly time-scales over the one month observing programme. Analysis of the power spectrum of the source show no persistent periodicities in these data, and no evidence of the 4.8-h orbital period. An upper limit of 15 mJy can be placed on the amplitude of any sinusoidal variation of source flux at the orbital period. The brightness temperature of a flare is typically T b ≥109 –1010 K , with a number of small flares of 5-min duration having brightness temperatures of T b ≥ few×1011 K . For such a change in flux to occur within a typical 10-min time-scale, the radiation must originate from plasmons with a size ≤1.22 au. This emission is unlikely to originate close to the centre of the system as both the jets and compact object are buried deep within an optically thick stellar wind. Assuming a spherically symmetric wind, plasmons would become visible at distances ∼13 au from the core. 相似文献

Multi-wavelength photometric observations of Cygnus X-3 were carried out at 18 cm through to 450 μm, complemented by X-ray (2–10 keV) observations. The system was mildly active with cm fluxes at 150–250 mJy. We find the spectrum to be flat with a spectral index of zero. Using a modified Wolf-Rayet wind model, and assuming emission is generated in synchrotron emitting jets from the source, we find an upper-limit to the magnetic field of 20 G at a distance 5×1012 cm is required. 相似文献
