This paper reveals the interesting relation between the inter-column spacing and the corresponding alteration of soil state
of stresses due to the vibro-installation technique. This relation is inferred from analyses for load settlement records of
various field load tests, performed for stone columns arrangements with different inter-column spacing values. In order to
have adequate confidence in the findings, a well-documented case history, involving three columns patterns along with their
relevant field and laboratory test results, is utilized for this study. Moreover, a well-tested finite element model, capable
of simulating both elasto-plastic and time dependent soil deformations as well as pore water pressure building and dissipation,
is employed in the analysis. Instead of determining the soil response to the test load, based on known initial soil stresses
and material properties, the analysis is inversely posed to determine the soil initial stresses, based on the recorded settlements
and the post-installation material properties. The alteration in the soil state of stress is represented by the increase in
the post-installation horizontal to vertical stress ratio, K*, as a function of the inter-column spacing. It is found that this alteration experiences a systematic decrease in its magnitude
as the inter-column spacing increases. 相似文献

Recent and paleo seismicity indicate that moderate seismic activity is relatively large for Aswan area. This is a warning on the possibility of occurrence of earthquakes in the future too. No strong motion records are available in Aswan area for engineers to rely upon. Consequently, the seismological modeling is an alternative approach till sufficient instrumental records around Aswan become available. In the present study, we have developed new ground motion attenuation relationship for events spanning 4.0?≤? M w?≤?7.0 and distance to the surface projection of the fault up to 100 km for Aswan based on a statistically simulated seismological model. We generated suites of ground motion time histories using stochastic technique. The ground motion attenuation relation describes the dependence of the strength of the ground motions on the earthquake magnitude and distance from the earthquake. The proposed equation for peak ground acceleration (PGA) for the bed rock is in the form of: $ {\mathbf{log}}{\text{ }}\left( {{\mathbf{PGA}}/{\mathbf{gal}}} \right){\text{ }} = {\mathbf{1}}.{\mathbf{24}} + {\mathbf{0}}.{\mathbf{358}}{M_{\mathbf{w}}} - {\text{ }}{\mathbf{log}}\left( {\mathbf{R}} \right){\text{ }}-{\text{ }}{\mathbf{0}}.{\mathbf{008}}{\text{ }}{\mathbf{R}}{\text{ }} + {\text{ }}{\mathbf{0}}.{\mathbf{22}}{\text{ }}{\mathbf{P}} $ . Where PGA is the peak ground acceleration in gal (cm/s2); Mw, its moment magnitude; R is the closest distance between the rupture projection and the site of interest; and the factor P is a dummy variable. It is observed that attenuation of strong motion in Aswan is correlated with those used before in Egypt. 相似文献

The source process and parameters for a moderate earthquake of magnitude Ml 4.1 that occurred on the Kalabsha fault at the Aswan area are analyzed. The derived focal mechanisms of this event and other two aftershocks using polarities of P, SV, and SH waves show strike-slip fault with minor vertical movement of normal type. The solutions give two nodal planes trending ENE–WSW and NNW–SSE in close agreement with the surface traces of the faults crossing the area. The movement is right lateral along the first plane while left lateral along the second one. The rupture process characterization of this event has been investigated by using the empirical Green’s function deconvolution method. By inversion only for the P wave part of the records of these three events (main and other two aftershocks), the source time function for the master events and the azimuthally variations in the (RSTF) pulse amplitude are retrieved for estimating the rupture directivities. The estimated rupture direction is combined with the P-wave focal mechanisms for the three events to identify the fault plane solution for these earthquakes. Based on the width, amplitudes, and numbers of the isolated source time functions, a complex bi-lateral rupture of the studied earthquake is delineated. The source parameters of the master event is calculated and the derived corner frequencies f o for P-wave spectra show a value of 6.6 Hz; the seismic moment (M o ) is 4.2?×?1022 Nm; the average displacement (U) is 0.5 m; fault radius (r) 40 m; the average value of the stress drops (Δσ) is 0.6 Mpa, and the moment magnitude (M w ) is 4.4. 相似文献

Benthic foraminiferal fauna are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively at three stratigraphic sections in Eastern Desert of Egypt (Serai, Duwi, and Um El Huetat). These sections embrace the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) interval which is represented by the occurrence of five distinctive beds. These beds constitute the Dababiya Quarry Member at the lower part of Esna Formation. The occurrence of them indicates an expanded and relatively continuous record across the P/E boundary. The organic-rich clay layer (bed no. 1 of the Dababiya Quarry Member) marks the start of the PETM event. This bed is characterized by the extinction of all benthic foraminiferal fauna except for the occurrence of rare agglutinated foraminiferal species. The presence of these species indicates an oceanic anoxic event at the sea floor. High concentration of phosphatic contents including fish remains occurred in the middle part of the PETM (bed nos. 2 and 3 of the Dababiya Quarry Member) with the continuous absence of benthic foraminiferal fauna except for few specimens at the top of bed 3. Bed nos. 4 and 5 of the Dababiya Quarry Member represent the upper part of the PETM and the initial stage of sea floor recovery. Low diversity and abundance of benthic foraminiferal taxa occurred within these beds, represented by Valvulineria scrobiculata, Lenticulina midwayensis, Loxostomoides appliane, and Siphogenerinoides eleganta. This phenomenon continues upward during the post-PETM event. The Paleocene velasco-type benthic foraminifera Angulogavelinella avnimelechi and Coryphostoma midwayensis species are extinct within the advent of the PETM event. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages at the studied sections are dominated by midway-type fauna with little representative of velasco-type fauna. The velasco-type species are represented with high abundance at Serai section and with low densities at Um El Huetat section, while at Duwi section, they rarely occurred. This suggests outer neritic-upper bathyal (150–400 m) setting at Serai section and mostly middle-outer neritic (50–150 m) setting at Um El Huetat and Duwi sections. 相似文献

Ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic terrain conductivity, and electric tomography have proven to be effective tools if they are combined together to investigate archeological sites. We have conducted a geophysical survey at the Akhmim archaeological site, the main objective of our survey is to locate additional buried structures for further excavation. Geophysical data were acquired in the area using the GEM-300 multi-frequency terrain conductivity profiler, the SIR 2000 ground penetrating radar, and the Syscal R2 resistivity meter systems. The results of the integrated interpretation show a number of buried features and a strong linear zone about 1 m wide that coincides with the suspected trend of a buried wall. There appears to be two parallel ridges of strong reflections on either side, indicating two parallel walls extended East-West and a room is identified at the bottom left comer of the site. Moreover, the interpretation results of some selected GPR and dipoledipole resistivity profiles adjacent to the open-air museum suggest the existence of a second statue of Ramses Ⅱ to the right of the previously discovered statue which could still be buried in the sand. 相似文献
