Eluvial concentration of platinum-group minerals (PGM) has developed in the south of New Caledonia, from the weathering of a mafic and ultramafic cumulate. The platinum/palladium (Pt/Pd) ratio evolution from the bottom to the top of the weathering profile indicates a chemical mobilization of Pd in supergene environment. The examination by scanning electron microscopy of the residual PGM collected in the weathering profile and their chemical characterization by electronic microprobe show a preservation of the structure and chemical signature (in the core of the grains) of the fresh PGM. This clearly demonstrates that the PGM studied here are residual and are affected by dissolution process.  相似文献

Mapping of lateritic bauxites over the West African rifted margin and analysis of the geomorphic properties of these bauxites, combined with available geological data lead to a discussion of the presence of either two Meso-Cenozoic planation surfaces or a single Eocene surface to account for the morphotectonic and paleoclimatic evolution of the Guinean landforms. At large scale, two stepped bauxitic levels are documented. Ongoing or episodic uplift following Gondwana breakup and Meso-Cenozoic climate change are proposed to have allowed the formation and abandonment of an Early mid-Cretaceous surface today preserved as the higher bauxitic level, and the setting of an Eocene planation surface bearing a second generation of bauxites, making the lower bauxitic level. The single Eocene surface hypothesis requires that Paleogene bauxitization preserved large pre-existing relief to explain two stepped bauxitic levels of the same age. The two-surface hypothesis is favored because it would explain rebauxitization of alluvial pebbles of bauxites under the lower lateritic level.  相似文献

Analysis of landscapes and soil covers from the outer to the inner part of a 75km×60km watershed in the South-Cameroon rainforest zone, characterized by important remnants of inherited ferricretes and stable hydrostatic base levels, indicates that the development of present landforms has not involved significant erosion by slope retreat because of the relative preservation of downslope residual ferricrete and that soil covers have vertically decayed under in situ geochemical process. At Azul (state of Para, Brazil) the lateritic weathering of organic shales with rhodochrosite and phyllosilicates (mainly muscovite) has led to one of the largest maganese deposits of Brazil (45 Mt of reserves with 42.65% Mn).The oxidation of the rhodochrosite-rich levels produces ore that typically breaks into plates preserving the original bedding of the rock. This oxidation corresponds to a sequence of transformation (rhodochrosite cryptomelane nsutite pyrolusite) by pseudomorphic replacement of the initial textures. At the top of this platy ore layer the late weathering of the micas releases potassium, and the nsutite and pyrolusite plasmas undergo a true retromorphic evolution toward cryptomelane, which is subsequently epigenized by lithiophorite.The geochemical balance computation at each stage and the modeling of this evolution show that acid and reducing conditions of the superficial layer favor the recycling of the Mn to the bottom of the profiles. Cryptomelane and lithiophorite constitute the more stable forms of manganese in the superficial layers of the lateritic profiles.  相似文献

Extensive mapping of relict lateritic landsurfaces over the 1600 m of relief of mainland New Caledonia is used to evaluate long-term morphogenesis of the island since its emergence in the Oligocene. The results support the interpretation of the lateritic levels as abandoned, stepped remnant landsurfaces that may be grouped into eight island-scale erosion levels recording episodic lowering of base level. The separation of the erosion levels results from the combination of positive epeirogenic movements of the New Caledonia continental ridge and long-term Neogene climate variability, which is recorded by the contrasted erosion and weathering patterns of the three youngest levels and tentatively correlated with known global and regional paleoclimatic events.  相似文献

An Erratum has been published for this article in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms 28(13) 2003, 1491. Granite domes, boulders and knobs buried within saprolite have been detected beneath lateritic weathering landsurfaces using 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). This technique provides a valuable means of mapping the bedrock topography and the regolith structures underneath landsurfaces, as it is intrinsically very sensitive to the electrical properties of superimposed pedological, hydrological and geological layers, allowing the determination of their relative geometry and spatial relationships. For instance, 2D inverse electrical resistivity models including topographic data permit the de?nition of lithostratigraphic cross‐sections. It shows that resistive layers, such as the more or less hardened ferruginous horizons and/or the bedrock, are generally well differentiated from poorly resistive layers, such as saprolite, including water‐saturated lenses, as has been corroborated by past and actual borehole observations. The analysis of the 2D geometrical relations between the weathering front, i.e. the bedrock topography, and the erosion surface, i.e. the landsurface topography, documents the weathering and erosion processes governing the development of the landforms and the underlying structures, thus allowing the etching hypothesis to be tested. The in?ltration waters are diverted by bedrock protrusions, which behave as structural thresholds compartmentalizing the saprolite domain, and also the regolith water table, into distinct perched saturated subdomains. The diverted waters are thus accumulated in bedrock troughs, which behave like underground channels where the saprolite production rate may be enhanced, provided that the water drainage is ef?cient. If the landsurface topography controls the runoff dynamics, the actual bedrock topography as depicted by ERT imaging in?uences the hydrodynamics beneath the landsurface. In some way, this may control the actual weathering rate and the shaping of bedrock protrusions as granite domes and knobs within thick saprolite, before their eventual future exposure. Madréporaires     
Une biozonation basée sur les Madréporaires demeure jusqu'à ce jour très aléatoire pour les raisons suivantes:
1. 1o Ce groupe zoologique a évolué très lentement au cours des temps géologiques et la répartition stratigraphique des genres et même, souvent, des espèces s'échelonne généralement sur plusieurs étages.
2. 2o Les facies à Madréporaires sont peu propices au développement de faunes caractéristiques telles que les Ammonites que l'on ne rencontre qu'exceptionnellement avec les Coraux et qui permettraient d'établir des corrélations plus précises avec les autres groupes fossiles.
En général, on ne peut donner l'âge d'une faune de Madréporaires que statistiquement, grâce à l'étude de la distribution stratigraphique de la totalité des espèces récoltées dans la formation.Pour le Crétacé moyen, on se heute, de plus, aux difficultés particulières suivantes:Les travaux sont généralement trop anciens; les genres et espèces nécessitent une révision systématique complète et trop peu de spécialistes travaillent actuellement sur ce groupe.Aucun travail de synthèse n'ayant été tenté jusqu'à ce jour, les résultats apportés ici ne doivent être considérés que comme une première ébauche de biostratigraphie basée sur les Madréporaires du Crétacé moyen.  相似文献
