From 1993 to 1996, three oceanographic moorings were deployed in the north-western Barents Sea, each with a current meter and an upward-looking sonar for measuring ice drafts. These yielded three years of currents and two years of ice draft measurements. An interannual variability of almost I m was measured in the average ice draft. Causes for this variability are explored, particularly its possible connection to changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. We found that the flow of Northern Barents Atlantic-derived Water and the transport of ice from the Central Arctic into the Barents Sea appears to be controlled by winds between Nordaustlandet and Franz Josef Land, which in turn may be influenced by larger-scale variations such as the Arctic Oscillation/North Atlantic Oscillation.  相似文献

Folding, faulting and large scale translation nappe movements are well-known classical collision zone features, which are also found in the Scandinavian Caledonides where lateral movements of up to a few hundred kilometres have been suggested. In contrast to this, azimuthal rotations around vertical axes are rarely or never observed geologically. In a few cases, palaeomagnetic data, however, show abnormal directions of the remanent magnetic components, which may indicate vertical axes of rotations. Different types and scales of palaeomagnetic interpretations are classified and discussed in relation to 5 examples from the Scandinavian Caledonides (the Särv nappe, the Lönset dome, the Fongen gabbro, the Sulitjelma gabbro, and the Trollfjord-Komagelv fault), and various models to explain segmental rotations of the crust are suggested.  相似文献

Petro-and paleomagnetic methods are applied to the study of the lower part of the Early Pleistocene Tuzla section on the Black Sea coast of the Taman Peninsula, This part of the section is composed of marine and lagoonal sediments deposited over the time interval 120–70 ka. The measured curves of the variation in the geomagnetic field inclination reveal an anomalous direction dated at ~110 ka that coincides with a similar anomalous direction in the Eltigen section (Ukraine) correlating with the Blake paleomagnetic event. The significant correlation between the time series NRM0.015/SIRM0.015 (Tuzla section) and the world composite Sint-800 curve indicates that the curve NRM0.015/SIRM0.015 in the interval 110–70 ka actually reflects the variation in the relative paleointensity of the geomagnetic field.  相似文献

A palaeomagnetic study comprising the directional results from 289 individual lava flows, sampled along eight sections in the Palaeocene basalts of West Greenland, is reported. The eight individual sections are correlated using lithostratigraphical marker horizons to form a single composite profile. Generally, the lithological correlation is in good agreement with the record of geomagnetic secular variation.
  The total composite palaeomagnetic profile represents a stratigraphic thickness of 1.6  km through the Vaigat Formation, which is the lowermost of the two volcanic formations formed during the main stage of plateau volcanism. Only two polarity zones are found in the composite profile, suggesting a very short duration for the West Greenland main plateau-building volcanism. 40Ar/39Ar dates support a high extrusion rate and also indicate that the lower normal polarity zone is Chron C27n and that the upper reverse polarity zone is Chron C26r.
  The C27n–C26r transition is fully recorded along one of the sections (Nuusap Qaqqarsua), with intermediate directions covering a 200  m thick succession of lavas. A combined palaeomagnetic, field and geochemical study along this profile showed good agreement; that is, geochemically and geologically derived single magmatic events show groupings of the palaeomagnetic directions. Supposing a duration for the geomagnetic transition of 5000 years, the eruption frequency during this period was as high as one flow every 80 years.  相似文献

This paper examines the role of atmospheric forcing in modifying the pathways of riverine water on the Laptev Sea shelf, using summer-to-winter hydrographic surveys from 2007 to 2009. Over the two consecutive winter seasons of 2007–2008 and 2008–2009 in the area of the winter coastal polynya, our data clearly link winter surface salinity fields to the previous summer conditions, with substantially different winter salinity patterns preconditioned by summer atmospheric forcing. In the summer of 2007, dominant along-shore westerly winds in the cyclonic regime force the Lena River runoff to flow eastward. In contrast, in the summer of 2008, dominant along-shore easterly winds over the East Siberian Sea and on-shore northerly winds over the Laptev Sea in the anticyclonic regime lock the riverine water in the vicinity of the Lena Delta. Over the coastal polynya area in the southeastern Laptev Sea these patterns precondition a surface salinity difference of 8–16 psu between the winters of 2008 and 2009. Overall, this indicates a residence time of at least half a year for riverine water on the Laptev Sea shelf. Future climate change associated with an enhanced summer cyclonicity over the eastern Arctic may turn more riverine water eastward along the eastern Siberian coast, resulting in weaker vertical density stratification over the Laptev Sea shelf, with possible impact on the efficiency of vertical mixing and polynya dense water production.  相似文献

During revisiting the Upper Pleistocene Pekla loess-soil section located on the Sea of Azov coast of the Taman Peninsula, its lower 6 m were continuously sampled, which led to an increase in the age range from ∼50 to 400 ka. The detailed rock magnetic study of the structure, grain-size, and concentrations of magnetic mineral (natural remanent magnetization (NRM) carrier) in the collected rock samples revealed regular changes in rock magnetic characteristics along the section and their correlation with climatic fluctuations. Magnetite and hematite both deposited during the transport of sedimentary material and formed during pedogenesis, which involved the entire section to a varying extent, represent the main magnetic minerals in the examined rocks. Automorphic paleosoils that were formed during warm and humid periods corresponding to odd stages of the MIS scale are characterized by elevated concentrations of magnetic mineral (NRM, magnetic susceptibility (K lf), saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), and anhysteresis (ideal) remanent magnetization (ARM)) parameters and share of superparamagnetic particles (up to 80%, according to elevated values of the frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility K td) as well as by lowered rigidity parameter (B cr) and grain size (ARM/K parameter). Such changes in the paleosoils may be explained by the occurrence of newly formed fine-grained magnetite particles close in size to its superparamagnetic and single-domain varieties due to the activation of bio/geochemical processes during warm stages. The growth of the above-mentioned rock magnetic parameters in automorphic soils may be considered as serving a quantitative criterion for defining the boundary between warm and cold periods even in poorly developed soils.  相似文献

A Gaussian random field with an unknown linear trend for the mean is considered. Methods for obtaining the distribution of the trend coefficients given exact data and inequality constraints are established. Moreover, the conditional distribution for the random field at any location is calculated so that predictions using e.g. the expectation, the mode, or the median can be evaluated and prediction error estimates using quantiles or variance can be obtained. Palaeomagnetic measurements have been made on specimens from Late Pleistocene sediments of a piston boring at Rubjerg in Vendsyssel, northern Jutland. The stratigraphy of the deposits is based on content of foraminifera. A total of 70 relatively oriented specimens were investigated palaeomagnetically. Normal steep inclinations close to that of the axial dipole field were found in the Upper Saxicava Sand and in the Younger Yoldia Clay (radiocarbon dated at 14,650 ± 190?12,650 ± 180 B.P.), and a secular variation with an amplitude of 10–12° in the inclincation and a “period” roughly estimated at about 350–400 years was found in the Younger Yoldia Clay.Seventeen relatively oriented specimens from undisturbed older marine deposits revealed a stable low inclination of 11° with α95 = 3°. The age of this apparent geomagnetic excursion falls somewhere between 23,000 and 40,000 B.P. (Older Yoldia Clay). Among other known geomagnetic excursions and events within this interval are Laschamp in France, Mono Lake in California and Lake Mungo in Australia. Until more definite ages have been obtained, the excursion is provisionally named the “Rubjerg Excursion”.  相似文献

Petro-and paleomagnetic methods are applied to the study of the upper part of the Late Pleistocene Tuzla section (Azov coast of the Taman Peninsula) composed of continental sediments and dated at 50–10 ka. The detailed curves of the angular components of the geomagnetic field obtained in this study display an anomalous direction coinciding in time (~25–35 ka) with an anomalous horizon discovered in rocks of the Roxolany section (Ukraine). According to the world time scale of geomagnetic excursions, the anomalous direction correlates with the Mono Lake excursion. A significant correlation between the time series NRM0.015/SIRM (Tuzla section) and NRM250/KB (Roxolany section) in the interval 50–10 ka and the world composite curves VADM-21 and Sint-800 implies that, in this time interval, the curve NRM0.015/SIRM reflects the variation in the relative paleointensity of the geomagnetic field.  相似文献
