The enactment of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) had a substantial influence on the manner in which the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway (Tenn-Tom) was constructed The interdisciplinary approach, including a board of outside consultants functioning as environmental advisors, played a valuable role toward meeting the objectives of minimizing adverse impacts and maximizing the positive environmental aspects Several of the key environmental issues associated with the Tenn-Tom are addressed and the findings are presented impacts addressed include aquifer drawdown, waterlogging, water quality, interbasin transfer, mixing of species, endangered species, erosion, sedimentation, and loss of wildlife habitat Additional discussion is also presented to explain the findings and place the identified impacts into perspective While implementation of the Tenn-Tom involved losses and resource tradeoffs, measures have been incorporated into the project to mitigate for significant resource losses The evaluation, planning, and design process for the Tenn-Tom can serve as a model approach for compliance with NEPA and other environmental statutes  相似文献

The seasonal variation of neutron emissions from Mars in different spectral intervals measured by the HEND neutron detector for the entire Martian year are analyzed. Based on these data, the spatial variations of the neutron emissions from the planet are globally mapped as a function of season, and the dynamics of seasonal variation of neutron fluxes with different energies is analyzed in detail. No differences were found between seasonal regimes of neutron fluxes in different energy ranges in the southern hemisphere of Mars, while the regime of fast neutrons (with higher energies) during the northern winter strongly differs from that during the southern winter. In winter (L s = 270°–330°), the fast neutron fluxes are noticeably reduced in the northern hemisphere (along with the consecutive thickening of the seasonal cap of solid carbon dioxide). This provides evidence of a temporary increase in the water content in the effective layer of neutron generation. According to the obtained estimates, the observed reduction of the flux of fast neutrons in the effective layer corresponds to an increase in the water abundance of up to 5% in the seasonal polar cap (70°–90°N), about 3% at mid-latitudes, and from 1.5 to 2% at low latitudes. The freezing out of atmospheric water at the planetary surface (at middle and high latitudes) and the hydration of salt minerals composing the Martian soil are considered as the main processes responsible for the temporary increase in the water content in the soil and upper layer of the seasonal polar cap. The meridional atmospheric transport of water vapor from the summer southern to the winter northern hemisphere within the Hadley circulation cell is a basic process that delivers water to the subsurface soil layer and ensures the observed scale of the seasonal increase in water abundance. In the summer northern hemisphere, the similar Hadley circulation cell transports mainly dry air masses to the winter southern hemisphere. The point is that the water vapor becomes saturated at lower heights during aphelion, and the bulk of the atmospheric water mass is captured in the near-equatorial cloudy belt and, thus, is only weakly transferred to the southern hemisphere. This phenomenon, known as the Clancy effect, was suggested by Clancy et al. (1996) as a basic mechanism for the explanation of the interhemispheric asymmetry of water storage in permanent polar caps. The asymmetry of seasonal meridional circulation of the Martian atmosphere seems to be another factor determining the asymmetry of the seasonal water redistribution in the “atmosphere-regolith-seasonal polar caps” system, found in the peculiarities of the seasonal regime of the neutron emission of Mars.  相似文献

Family farms have long generated income from agricultural tourism including U‐picks, wagon rides, corn mazes and petting zoos, but contemporary agricultural tourism reflects much greater sophistication in terms of product variety, services, activities, and marketing. In Michigan, farm operators have moved beyond classic products and activities and the traditional consumer base. New sources of revenue derive from classes on beer, cider, mead and wine making, yarn spinning, perfume/soap‐making, farm markets, fishing, educational classes, school tours and hospitality including weddings and on‐farm restaurants. This case study of Michigan agricultural tourism reports results from a systematic survey of 154 agritourism operations conducted throughout the state during summer and fall of 2013 with a focus on the economic benefits of the fast‐changing sector. This study summarizes tax revenues, sales and employment trends for the farm operations participating in the survey but also quantitatively assesses the contribution of agricultural tourism to Michigan's economy through an extrapolation of the sample to estimate state‐wide totals. Results from OLS multivariate regression analysis intended to identify relationships between employment, advertising and scale to gross sales per day are also reported. These analyses show the importance of agricultural tourism to rural and peri‐urban places in Michigan and throughout the nation, while raising concerns about a growing division between large and small operators and what this growing gap may mean for the future of the sector.  相似文献

The paper reports quantitative evaluations of the modal and chemical composition of the mantle whose Paleozoic activation gave rise to the Kola alkaline province in the northeastern Baltic Shield. The volume of alkaline magmatism within the province and the volume of the mantle melts that were generated in the course of the Paleozoic activation cycle were evaluated by three-dimensional density modeling on the basis of gravimetric data. Our studies involved, along with the sampling of alkaline magmatic rocks in the region, the examination of the deep (to a depth of 22.5 km) structure of all alkaline intrusions in the province and the development of their three-dimensional density models. Concentrations of trace elements were precisely analyzed by the ICP-MS technique, and these data were used in order to calculate the weighted mean concentrations of trace elements in rocks of the province, to simulate the melting of mantle sources, and to evaluate the geodynamic sequences of these mantle processes. Our simulations indicate that the total volume of the Paleozoic mantle melts in the northeastern part of the Baltic Shield amounted to 15000 ± 2700 km3. The calculated composition of the partial melts that could be produced by the mantle of average composition shows the necessity for the significant introduction of certain elements into the mantle source. It is demonstrated that primitive melts in the Kola province were highly probably derived at low degrees of melting of the source (0.3–0.5%), whose composition corresponded to phlogopite-bearing (±amphibole) garnet lherzolite under the conditions of the mantle garnet depth facies. The calculated degree of enrichment of this sources was three times higher than the average concentrations of incompatible elements in the primitive mantle. It is demonstrated that magma generating processes affected much of the lithosphere beneath northeastern Fennoscandia and reached a depth of 120 km, i.e., the depth of the mantle facies of garnet lherzolite. The area of this region corresponds to the area of regional Paleozoic magmatism, and its depth correlates with the estimated P-T conditions under which the mantle xenoliths found in regional diatremes were formed.  相似文献

This paper presents data on the distribution of REEs in sulfide minerals from ore-bearing gabbronorites in the Penikat layered intrusion and the results of their isotopic-geochronological Sm-Nd study. A new procedure for determination of REEs in the samples without preliminary separating and concentrating was tested on standard samples to be further used for analysis of sulfide minerals. Analysis of the spectra of the REE distribution in sulfides represents a distribution trend that is similar to the already studied bulk rock and allows deducing that the character of the REE distribution in sulfide minerals from gabbronorites in the Penikat layered intrusion was inherited from the parent magma melt; while the formation of sulfides took place at the stage of rock crystallization. The performed complex studies allow considering that sulfides can be successfully used together with the rock-forming minerals in Sm-Nd dating of ore-bearing mafite-ultramafite intrusions.  相似文献

The microstructure and magnetic properties of accessory Fe–Cr-spinels from the Kytlym massif of the Urals platinum-bearing belt were studied. Atypical Fe–Cr-spinels in the form of magnetic microareas in grains of primary nonmagnetic Fe–Cr-spinel have been revealed for the first time in the bed dunites of the Kytlym multiphase concentrically zoned massif, North Urals. These spinels are responsible for the magnetic properties of the dunites. It has been established that the microareas are separations in solid solution Fe2+(Cr2–xFex3+)O4, which are enriched in Fe3 + and are probably an intermediate product of the transformation of primary accessory Fe-Cr-spinel during the formation of the dunite massif. These are magnetic microphases with particular chemical composition, cation distribution, and corresponding reversed crystal lattice, which determine the main magnetic properties of the microarea: the magnitude and direction of magnetization vector and Curie temperature. The formation of this earlier unknown type of magnetic Fe–Cr-spinel is probably conjugate with the formation and concentration of PGE mineralization in the bed dunites of the Kytlym platinum-bearing massif. The presence of such magnetization carriers in rocks and ores must be taken into account in geophysical research at the Urals chromite and platinum–chromite deposits.  相似文献

The Precambrian Belomorian mobile belt located between the Karelian craton and the Lapland–Umba granulite belt contains large amount of small rootless mafic–ultramafic intrusions, which are dispersed over a large area and distinguished as the Belomorian drusite (coronite) complex. U-Pb dating of magmatic zircon and metamorphic rutile from the drusite body on Vorony Island showed that it was crystallized at 2460 ± 11 Ma and metamorphosed at 1775 ± 45 Ma. Petrographic and geochemical data confirm that the parental magmas of the drusites belong to the siliceous high-magnesian (boninite-like) series, which also was responsible for the formation of large layered plutons in stable domains of the Baltic Shield.  相似文献
