Cosmic radiation is an important problem for human interplanetary missions. The “Radiation Exposure and Mission Strategies for Interplanetary Manned Missions–REMSIM” study is summarised here. They are related to current strategies and countermeasures to ensure the protection of astronauts from radiation during interplanetary missions, with specific reference to: radiation environment and its variability; radiation effects on the crew; transfer trajectories and associated fluences; vehicle and surface habitat concepts; passive and active shielding concepts; space weather monitoring and warning systems.  相似文献

This paper presents UV data recorded over 12 months in 2000/2001 at a southern hemisphere (Toowoomba) and similar latitude northern hemisphere (BigBend and Everglades) sites using Brewer Spectrophotometers. The peak daily erythemally weighted UV (DUV) at the Toowoomba site was 8.8% and 25% higher compared to that at the BigBend and Everglades sites, respectively. The Everglades site exposures are lower than the BigBend site exposures in summer and spring. This may be due to the higher cloud cover for the Everglades site. The summer DUV values between Toowoomba and BigBend are similar. In spring, the average DUV value is the greatest at BigBend compared to the other two sites. Results indicate that variability between the measurement sites is due to varying cloud and ozone, and possibly due to aerosol and airmass differences of each region. Of these different site-specific local atmospheric conditions, cloud was the main contributor to the differences in UV between the sites.  相似文献

Four samples of synthetic chromium-bearing spinels of (Mg, Fe2+)(Cr, Fe3+)2O4 composition and four samples of natural spinels of predominantly (Mg, Fe2+)(Al, Cr)2O4 composition were studied at ambient conditions by means of optical absorption spectroscopy. Synthetic end-member MgCr2O4 spinel was also studied at pressures up to ca. 10 GPa. In both synthetic and natural samples, chromium is present predominantly as octahedral Cr3+ seen in the spectra as two broad intense absorption bands in the visible range caused by the electronic spin-allowed 4 A 2g  → 4 T 2g and 4 A 2g  → 4 T 1g transitions (U- and Y-band, respectively). A distinct doublet structure of the Y-band in both synthetic and natural spinels is related to trigonal distortion of the octahedral site in the spinel structure. A small, if any, splitting of the U-band can only be resolved at curve-fitting analysis. In all synthetic high-chromium spinels, a couple of relatively narrow and weak bands of the spin-allowed transitions 4 A 2g  → 2 E g and 4 A 2g  → 2 T 1g of Cr3+, intensified by exchange-coupled interaction between Cr3+ and Fe3+ at neighboring octahedral sites of the structure, appear at ~14,400 and ~15,100 cm?1. A vague broad band in the range from ca. 15,000 to 12,000 cm?1 in synthetic spinels is tentatively attributed to IVCr2+ + VICr3+ → IVCr3+ + VICr2+ intervalence charge-transfer transition. Iron, mainly as octahedral Fe3+, causes intense high-energy absorption edge in near UV-range (ligand–metal charge-transfer O2? → Fe3+, Fe2+ transitions). As tetrahedral Fe2+, it appears as a strong infrared absorption band at around 4,850 cm?1 caused by electronic spin-allowed 5 E → 5 T 2 transitions of IVFe2+. From the composition shift of the U-band in natural and synthetic MgCr2O4 spinels, the coefficient of local structural relaxation around Cr3+ in spinel MgAl2O4–MgCr2O4 system was evaluated as ~0.56(4), one of the lowest among (Al, Cr)O6 polyhedra known so far. The octahedral modulus of Cr3+ in MgCr2O4, derived from pressure-induced shift of the U-band of Cr3+, is ~313 (50) GPa, which is nearly the same as in natural low-chromium Mg, Al-spinel reported by Langer et al. (1997). Calculated from the results of the curve-fitting analysis, the Racah parameter B of Cr3+ in natural and synthetic MgCr2O4 spinels indicates that Cr–O-bonding in octahedral sites of MgCr2O4 has more covalent character than in the diluted natural samples. Within the uncertainty of determination in synthetic MgAl2O4 spinel, B does not much depend on pressure.  相似文献

In Geropotamos River Basin, located on the north-central part of Crete, Greece, two main factors were believed to be affecting the geochemistry of the groundwater with high salt contents: seawater intrusion and/or Miocene evaporates. To identify the origin of the high salinity in groundwater, a hydrogeochemical and isotopic study was performed. Water samples from 22 wells and 2 springs were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters, major ions analysis, as well as stable isotopes (??18O, ??D). From the present survey, in which detailed hydrogeochemical investigation was conducted, the uncertainty of the contamination sources was decreased in the northern part of Geropotamos Basin. The results complement the scenario in which seawater and the widespread human activities are the principal sources of groundwater contamination. Moreover, the results of the stable isotopes analyses (??18O and ??D) support the same hypothesis and make seawater intrusion the most probable cause for the highest salinity waters. It is indicated that saline intrusion is likely to occur along fractures in a fault zone through otherwise low-permeability phyllite?Cquartzite bedrock, which demonstrates the critical role of fracture pathways in salination problems of coastal aquifers.  相似文献

During the Pleistocene a fauna composed of large (biomass > 44 kg) and giant mammals (biomass > 1000 kg) that are usually associated with open environments lived in the Brazilian Intertropical Region. We present here new information concerning the paleoecology and chronology of some species of this megafauna. Carbon isotope analyses were performed for a better understanding of the paleoecology of the species Eremotherium laurillardi (Lund, 1842), Notiomastodon platensis (Ameghino, 1888) and Toxodon platensis (Owen, 1849). The δ13C data allow attributing a generalist diet to these species, which varied according to the kind of habitat in which they lived. In more open habitats all species were grazers; in mixed habitats E. laurillardi and T. platensis were mixed feeders, and N. platensis was grazer; and in more closed habitats all species were mixed feeders.  相似文献

To investigate the long-term modulation of galactic cosmic rays at the ground-based detector energies, the monthly values of the neutron monitor (Climax, Mt. Washington, Deep River, and Huancayo) and ionization chamber (Cheltenham/Fredericksburg, Huancayo, and Yakutsk) intensities have been correlated with the sunspot numbers (used as a proxy index for transient solar activity) for each phase of sunspot cycles 18 to 22. Systematic differences are found for results concerning odd and even sunspot cycles. During odd cycles (19 and 21) the onset time of cosmic-ray modulation is delayed when compared with the onset time of the sunspot cycle, while they are more similar during even (18, 20, and 22) cycles. Checking the green corona data, on a half-year basis, we found typical heliolatitudinal differences during ascending phases of consecutive sunspot cycles. This finding suggests a significant role of the latitudinal coronal behaviour in the heliospherical dynamics during a Hale cycle. Such effectiveness concerns not only the transient interplanetary perturbations but also the recurrent ones. In fact, when lag between cosmic-ray data and sunspot numbers is considered, the anticorrelation between both parameters is very high (correlation coefficient |r| > 0.9) for all the phases considered, except for the declining ones of cycles 20 and 21, when high-speed solar wind streams coming from coronal holes affect the cosmic-ray propagation, and theRz parameter is no longer the right proxy index for solar-induced effects in the interplanetary medium.  相似文献

The theory of satellite loss resulting from a giant impact on Uranus (Parisi and Brunini 1997, Planet. Space Sci.45, 181-187) is revisited, in the light of the discovery of its five outer moons (Gladman et al. 1998, Nature392, 897-899; Gladman et al. 2000, Icarus147, 320-324; erratum 148, 320). Physical conditions and dynamical constraints in the great collision scenario and restrictions in the possible mechanisms for the origin of the outer uranian satellites are obtained from the knowledge of their actual orbital properties. We conclude that the existence of these moons implies that their origin must be connected to a breakup process. Other scenarios for their origin cast serious doubts on the occurrence of a giant collision at the end of Uranus' formation process to account for its large spin axis obliquity.  相似文献

The evaluation of the seismic damageability of existing buildings is a primary element in the planning for mitigation of earthquake effects. To this purpose, the use of the vulnerability index has been recently proposed and adopted in various surveys in Italy. The index results from grading the status of various structural and non-structural components exposed to damage in a seismic event. The effectiveness of the vulnerability index as a measure of the health status of buildings is discussed on the basis of regional surveys of vulnerability index versus reported damage, carried out in various Italian areas such as Friuli and the city of Gubbio. Also, investigation of the items most effective in describing damageability among those contributing to the index is performed, in view of formulating a reduced survey procedure. A damage versus vulnerability index database collected in these surveys is presented as well. Finally, a vulnerability index based procedure to evaluate the expected damage in a territory is proposed.  相似文献

Among various methodologies for seismic risk mitigation, the use of the marginal cost of saving a life as decision variable, proposed in the literature, does not require to assign a cost to human life. Also, optimization of resources over a territory can be profitably performed in terms of such a variable. Parameters of different type (seismic, structural, financial) enter into the analytical definition of the marginal cost of saving a life. These parameters are subject to intrinsic variability and uncertainty that are bound to affect the decision variable. This aspect was not originally taken into account systematically. The influence of the uncertainty in the various basic parameters on the decision variable is studied here. A procedure is suggested to develop constant probability of exceedance contours of the decision variable versus the design coefficient to be selected. The suggested procedure is exemplified for two regions of different seismicity.  相似文献
