ABSTRACT

This paper analyses the composition of surface water and shallow groundwater in the Grande River basin, North-Central Chile, using this information to characterize water interactions. Chemical and isotopic data for surface water and groundwater (7 and 6 sampling locations, respectively) were obtained from three sampling campaigns performed in March–April (autumn), August–September (late winter) and December (early summer) 2012. Precipitation samples were also collected. Data was processed using spatial distribution charts, Piper and Stiff diagrams, and multivariate analysis. In general, the results for each method converge on a high degree of connectivity between surface water and shallow groundwater in the study area. Furthermore, approximately a 10% of groundwater contribution to the surface flow discharge was estimated for a particular reach. This multi-method approach was useful for the characterization of surface water–groundwater interactions in the Grande River basin, and may become a suitable and replicable scheme for studies in arid and semi-arid basins facing similar water management challenges.

Many large rivers around the world no longer flow to their deltas, due to ever greater water withdrawals and diversions for human needs. However, the importance of riparian ecosystems is drawing increasing recognition, leading to the allocation of environmental flows to restore river processes. Accurate estimates of riparian plant evapotranspiration (ET) are needed to understand how the riverine system responds to these rare events and achieve the goals of environmental flows. In 2014, historic environmental flows were released into the Lower Colorado River at Morelos Dam (Mexico); this once perennial but now dry reach is the final stretch to the mighty Colorado River Delta. One of the primary goals was to supply native vegetation restoration sites along the reach with water to help seedlings establish and boost groundwater levels to foster the planted saplings. Patterns in ET before, during, and after the flows are useful for evaluating whether this goal was met and understanding the role that ET plays in this now ephemeral river system. Here, diurnal fluctuations in groundwater levels and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data were used to compare estimates of ET specifically at 3 native vegetation restoration sites during 2014 planned flow events, and MODIS data were used to evaluate long‐term (2002–2016) ET responses to restoration efforts at these sites. Overall, ET was generally 0–10 mm d?1 across sites, and although daily ET values from groundwater data were highly variable, weekly averaged estimates were highly correlated with MODIS‐derived estimates at most sites. The influence of the 2014 flow events was not immediately apparent in the results, although the process of clearing vegetation and planting native vegetation at the restoration sites was clearly visible in the results.  相似文献

Iran is a developing country with arid and semiarid regions. Poor management of water resources combined with the effects of climate change is leading to the drying of several rivers and wetlands. Several planned water development projects, primarily for agricultural expansion, will be implemented in the coming years which could worsen impacts on vulnerable aquatic ecosystems. Proper water resources management is essential to meet present and future residential, environmental, industrial, and agricultural demands in semiarid regions. This paper presents projections of how the availability of water resources will change in the Karkheh river basin of Iran for the period 2010–2059 employing sustainability criteria in the form of time-based reliability, volumetric reliability, resiliency, and vulnerability. This paper’s results show that consideration of environmental receptors as a stakeholder of water use places limitations on agricultural development within the Karkheh river basin.  相似文献

Guagua Pichincha, located 14 km west of Quito, Ecuador, is a stratovolcano bisected by a horseshoe-shaped caldera. In 1999, after some months of phreatic activity, Guagua Pichincha entered into an eruptive period characterized by the extrusion of several dacitic domes, vulcanian eruptions, and pyroclastic flows. We estimated the three-dimensional (3-D) P-wave velocity structure beneath Guagua Pichincha using a tomographic inversion method based on finite-difference calculations of first-arrival times. Hypocenters of volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes and long-period (LP) events were relocated using the 3-D P-wave velocity model. A low-velocity anomaly exists beneath the caldera and may represent an active volcanic conduit. Petrologic analysis of eruptive products indicates a magma storage region beneath the caldera, having a vertical extent of 7–8 km with the upper boundary at about sea level. This zone coincides with the source region of deeper VT earthquakes, indicating that a primary magma body exists in this region. LP swarms occurred in a cyclic pattern synchronous with ground deformation during magma extrusions. The correlation between seismicity and ground deformation suggests that both respond to pressure changes caused by the cyclic eruptive behavior of lava domes.  相似文献

The employment of systems approaches, neoclassical economic theory, social networks and institutional approaches, and the potential role of population geography in developing a more comprehensive explanation of the changing dynamics of international migration in the region, are discussed. Summary An instrumental system for securing aerosol samples in the stratosphere by electrostatic precipitation has been developed. The system is designed to be balloon borne to altitudes between 30 km and 45 km and to collect with high efficiency the aerosol content of the stratosphere at these altitudes. Volumetric sampling rates of one meter3 sec–1 ambient air are obtained with the sampling configuration with collection efficiency in excess of 95 percent for particles between .01 microns (mmd) and 2 microns (mmd).Specially developed associated instrumentation for altitude and air flow measurement points to an important versatility in the application of gas discharges for low-pressure (or high altitude) altimetry and anemometry over a very wide range of air densities and tempertures.The theory, operation, and performance of the aerosol sampling system and associated subsytems are described. Certain new observations of low-density corona physics phenomena are reported and potential applications to other areas of research and technology are indicated.
Zusammenfassung Es wurde ein Instrument entwickelt, mit dem man Aerosolproben aus der Stratosphäre durch elektrostatischen Niederschlag erhalten kann. Das System wird von einem Ballon in Höhen zwischen 30 und 45 km getragen und sammelt mit hoher Wirksamkeit Proben des Aerosolgehalts in diesen Höhen. Mit dem Instrument wird eine Sammelgeschwindigkeit von 1 m3/sek erreicht bei einer Sammelwirksamkeit von mehr als 95% für Partikel von Größen zwischen 0,01 und 2 Mikron.Besonders entwickelte angeschlossene Instrumente zur Messung der Höhe und der Luftströmungen zeigen die wesentliche Vielseitigkeit der Anwendung von Gasentladungen für die Höhenmessung und Windmessung bei niedrigem Druck (oder in großen Höhen) in einem großen Bereich der Luftdichte und der Temperatur.Es werden die Theorie, die Arbeitsweise und die Ausführung des Aerosolprobeninstrumentes und der angeschlossenen Hilfssysteme beschrieben. Es wird über einige neue Beobachtungen aus dem Bereich der Phänomene der Gasentladungen bei niedriger Dichte berichtet und neue mögliche Anwendungen in anderen Zweigen der Forschung und Technologie werden angegeben.

Résumé On a construit un instrument au moyen duquel on peut obtenir des échantillons d'aérosole stratosphérique par précipitation électrostatique. Le système est emporté par un ballon à des altitudes de 30 à 45 km et rassemble avec efficacité des echantillons du contenu de l'aérosole à ces altitudes. Avec cet appareil, on obtient une vitesse de prise de 1 m3/sec avec une efficacité de plus de 95% pour les particules comprises entre 0,01 et 2 microns.Des appareils spéciaux annexes permettent de mesurer la hauteur et les courants d'air. Ils démontrent les possibilités multiples de l'utilisation de la décharge dans un gaz pour la mesure de l'altitude et des vents par pression très faible (ou à très haute altitude) dans un domaine étendu tant de la densité de l'air que de la température.On décrit dans ce mémoire la théorie, le mode de travail et l'exécution de cet instrument de prise d'échantillons d'aérosoles ainsi que des systèmes auxiliaires annexes. On rapporte sur quelques nouvelles observations faites dans le domaine des phénomènes connexes à la décharge dans un gaz par faible densité. On indique en outre de nouvelles possibilités d'utilisation du système dans d'autres branches de la recherche ou de la technologie.

The Lorca and Fortuna basins are two intramontane Neogene basins located in the eastern Betic Cordillera (SE Spain). During the Late Tortonian—Early Messinian, marine and continental evaporites precipitated in these basins as a consequence of increased marine restriction and isolation. Here we show a stratigraphic correlation between the evaporite records of these basins based on geochemical indicators. We use SO4 isotope compositions and Sr isotopic ratios in gypsum, and halite Br contents to characterize these units and to identify the marine or continental source of the waters feeding the evaporite basins. In addition, we review the available chronological information used to date these evaporites in Lorca (La Serrata Fm), including a thick saline deposit, that we correlate with the First Evaporitic Group in Fortuna (Los Baños Fm). This correlation is also supported by micropalaeontological data, giving a Late Tortonian age for this sequence. The Second Evaporitic Group, (Chicamo Fm), and the Third Evaporitic Group (Rambla Salada Fm) developed only in Fortuna during the Messinian. According to the palaeogeographical scheme presented here, the evaporites of the Lorca and Fortuna basins were formed during the Late Tortonian—Early Messinian, close to the Betic Seaway closure. Sulphate isotope compositions and Sr isotopic ratios of the Ribera Gypsum Mb, at the base of the Rambla Salada Fm (Fortuna basin), match those of the Late Messinian selenite gypsum beds in San Miguel de Salinas, in the near Bajo Segura basin (40 km to the East), and other Messinian Salinity Crisis gypsum deposits in the Mediterranean. According to these geochemical indicators and the uncertainty of the chronology of this unit, the assignment of the Rambla Salada Fm to the MSC cannot be ruled out.  相似文献
