The general problem of magnetic modelling involves accounting for the effect of both remanent magnetization and the application of an external magnetic field. However, as far as the disturbing field of a magnetic body in a magnetic environment is concerned, there is an equivalence between the effects of these two causations that allows the remanence to be represented in terms of an equivalent primary magnetic H field. Moreover, due to the linearity of the magnetic field in terms of its causations, the general modelling problem involving an applied magnetic field in the presence of remanence can be simply and more efficiently dealt with in terms of an equivalent primary field acting in the absence of any remanent magnetization. 相似文献

Proposals for wind farms in areas of known importance for breeding seabirds highlight the need to understand the impacts of these structures. Using an energetic modelling approach, we examine the effects of wind farms as barriers to movement on seabirds of differing morphology. Additional costs, expressed in relation to typical daily energetic expenditures, were highest per unit flight for seabirds with high wing loadings, such as cormorants. Taking species-specific differences into account, costs were relatively higher in terns, due to the high daily frequency of foraging flights. For all species, costs of extra flight to avoid a wind farm appear much less than those imposed by low food abundance or adverse weather, although such costs will be additive to these. We conclude that adopting a species-specific approach is essential when assessing the impacts of wind farms on breeding seabird populations, to fully anticipate the effects of avoidance flights. 相似文献

Northern Ireland has a tradition of peat cutting; 78 per cent by area of remaining lowland bogs and 46 per cent of blanket bogs have been cut in the past. Since the early 1980s, machine peat extraction for fuel and horticulture has increased, against a background of changing economic support for agriculture, high rural unemployment and agricultural underemployment. Cutting fuel peat can reduce household fuel costs and some peat fuel is sold to gain income. Horticultural peat is cut mainly for sale. Expansion of machine extraction, with possible environmental impacts, occurred as interest in peatland conservation increased. Potential conflict arises between local economic needs and conservation. Machine cutting for fuel is widespread, but affects only 2.6 per cent of the blanket peat area; horticultural extraction is more localized and is only one-fifth of the extent of fuel extraction. Altitude, distance from roads, land ownership and rights, turbary, religious affiliation, local economic needs and the role of government departments all contribute to explaining the distribution and extent of extraction. 相似文献

Existing techniques for computing the gravitational field due to a homogeneous polyhedron all transform the required volume integral, expressing the field due to a volume distribution of mass, into a surface integral, expressing the potential due to a surface mass distribution over the boundary of the source body. An alternative representation is also possible and results in a surface integral expressing the potential due to a variable-strength double layer located on the polyhedral source boundary. Manipulation of this integral ultimately allows the gravitational field component in an arbitrary direction to be expressed as a weighted sum of the potentials due to two basic source distributions. These are a uniform-strength double layer located on all faces and a uniform-strength line source located along all edges. The derivatives of the gravitational field components can also be expressed in a similar form as can the magnetic field components due to a homogeneous magnetic polyhedron. It follows that the present approach can be used to generate a universal program capable of modelling all the commonly used potential field responses due to 3D bodies of arbitrary shape. 相似文献

Different sizes of Littorina littorea were collected from four areas in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. Their metallothionein (MT) and heavy metal concentrations were analysed using the Silver Saturation Method and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, respectively. Concentrations of MT, Cd and Zn (as μg g−1 dry soft-body weight) generally decreased with an increase in size of L. littorea. MT concentrations were better correlated with Cd than with Zn or Cu concentrations. Nevertheless, MT and the metals in periwinkles (as μg individual−1) increased significantly with increasing size. Concentrations of MT and the metals among the sampling areas were compared at a standardised soft-body weight (10 mg). The results from Discriminant Analysis based on all metal concentrations indicate that Largs is different from the other areas and characterised by high Fe concentrations in L. littorea. The problems and differences in using either soft-body weight or shell length as independent variable for size-standardisation are discussed. 相似文献

Plastic particles were found in the gizzards of Leach's Petrels, Manx Shearwaters and Fulmars from Scottish Colonies, but were not found in 21 British storm Petrels. Fulmars ingested larger particles than did Leach's Petrels. The volume of plastic was equivalent to 59% of relaxed gizzard volume in most contaminated bird, but only equivocal statistical evidence for an influence of ingested plastic on body mass could be obtained. 相似文献
