This letter presents preliminary results concerning the use of new observations from the A-Train Constellation for testing a new technique of remotely sensing hurricane intensity from space based on modeling a hurricane as a balanced, convectively neutral vortex. The key observational requirements are simultaneous, accurate measurements of cloud-top height, cloudtop temperature, and cloud profiling information across the center of the storm, although there are ways to bypass the need for cloud-top temperature. In this letter, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard Aqua provides an estimation of the cloud-top temperature, and the near-simultaneous CloudSat observations provide the essential cloud-top height and cloud profiling information. Initial results indicate that the new technique is a promising method for estimating storm intensity when compared post facto to the best track database. Potential uncertainties and room for further refinement of the technique are discussed. 相似文献

Oxygen isotope ratios in streamflow of the Missouri River basin vary geographically due to differences in source precipitation and the integration of waters from upstream regions. Average '18O values in the Missouri River main stem systematically increase from less than -17 in the headwaters to about -9 in the lower basin. Seasonal variations at a given location result from fluctuations in meteoric precipitation, residence time in reservoirs and groundwater systems, evaporation, and snowmelt. Average water chemistry values are successfully predicted for the upstream stations of two reaches on the lower Missouri River based on changes in discharge along each reach and water quality measurements collected at the downstream stations. Source regions for some dissolved ions found in the lower Missouri River are also identified. Sodium and sulfate originate predominantly from the basin above Sioux City, Iowa, while nitrate is largely derived from agricultural regions below Sioux City. 相似文献

To explore planetary evolution, we provide conductive cooling profiles that account for planet size, phonon diffusivity and various internal heating scenarios. Our new analytical solution for simple cooling of spheres reveals that heat is removed from only Earth's outermost ~1000 km over geological time. Numerical models with decaying heat production show that any upward concentration of radionuclides causes high temperatures at shallow depths, forcing interior temperatures to increase with time while producing a thermal gradient that forbids lower mantle convection. Hence, differentiation drives upper mantle magmatism and tectonics, leaving a quiescent but hot deep interior, while slowly melting the core. 相似文献

This paper investigates a resettlement program for communities impacted by volcanic hazards from Mayon volcano in the Philippines.
Two resettlement sites are selected, the first FVR–FNM village (named after President Fidel V. Ramos and Mayor Florencio N.
Munoz) was settled after the 1993 eruption. The second, Bungkaras Village, was settled after the 2006 eruption and associated
typhoon Reming lahar event. These two sites were selected in order to explore the process of relocation over the short and
longer term, although the main focus of the study is in the more recently settled Bungkaras Village. The overall aim is to
determine if exposure to volcanic hazards has decreased without adding to vulnerability through loss of livelihood, community
and culture, and exposure to new risks. A mixed method qualitative approach was utilized including semistructured interviews,
participant observations, and a participatory workshop. This enabled an in-depth understanding of life and the challenges
faced at the resettlement sites vis-à-vis the original settlements. In order to document the process of site selection, planning,
and building, semistructured interviews were conducted with key government officials, emergency managers, and donors of the
resettlement projects. This research demonstrates that a volcanic resettlement program must be directed by meaningful consultation
with the impacted community who also share in the decision making. Successful resettlement must consider aspects of livelihood
security, house design, and the availability of public and lifeline facilities. 相似文献

Strontium and oxygen isotopic variations in Mesozoic and Tertiary plutons of central Idaho 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Regional variations in initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (r
i) of Mesozoic plutons in central Idaho locate the edge of Precambrian continental crust at the boundary between the late Paleozoic-Mesozoic
accreted terranes and Precambrian sialic crust in western Idaho. The r
i values increase abruptly but continuously from less than 0.704 in the accreted terranes to greater than 0.708 across a narrow,
5 to 15 km zone, characterized by elongate, lens-shaped, highly deformed plutons and schistose metasedimentary and metavolcanic
units. The chemical and petrologic character of the plutons changes concomitantly from ocean-arc-type, diorite-tonalite-trondhjemite
units to a weakly peraluminous, calcic to calcalkalic tonalite-granodiorite-granite suite (the Idaho batholith). Plutons in
both suites yield Late Cretaceous ages, but Permian through Early Cretaceous bodies are confined to the accreted terranes
and early Tertiary intrusions are restricted to areas underlain by Precambrian crust. The two major terranes were juxtaposed
between 75 and 130 m.y. ago, probably between 80 and 95 m.y.
Oxygen and strontium isotopic ratios and Rb and Sr concentrations of the plutonic rocks document a significant upper-crustal
contribution to the magmas that intrude Precambrian crust. Magmas intruding the arc terranes were derived from the upper mantle/subducted
oceanic lithosphere and may have been modified by anatexis of earlier island-arc volcanic and sedimentary units.
Plutons near the edge of Precambrian sialic crust represent simple mixtures of the Precambrian wall-rocks with melts derived
from the upper mantle or subducted oceanic lithosphere with r
i of 0.7035. Rb/Sr varies linearly with r
i, producing “pseudoisochrons” with apparent “ages” close to the age of the wall rocks. Measured δ
18O values of the wall rocks are less than those required for the assimilated end-member by Sr-O covariation in the plutons,
however, indicating that wall-rock δ
18O was reduced significantly by exchange with circulating fluids. Metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup are similarly
affected near the batholith, documenting a systematic depletion in 18O as much as 50 km from the margin of the batholith.
Plutons of the Bitterroot lobe of the Idaho batholith are remote from the accreted terranes and represent mixtures of Precambrian
wall-rocks with melts dominated by continental lower crust (r
i>0.708) rather than mantle. “Pseudoisochrons” resulting from these data are actually mixing lines that yield apparent “ages”
less than the true age of the wall rocks and meaningless “ri”. Assimilation/ fractional-crystallization models permit only insignificant amounts of crystal fractionation during anatexis

We have used the Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope to observe the molecular gas in the Circinus galaxy using the CO(1 → 0) transition as a tracer. The central region and major axis have been mapped and several other points were also observed. The gas in the galaxy is concentrated towards the nucleus, the peak being coincident with the radio/optical core. The inclination of the molecular galactic disc is more comparable to that of the radio continuum than to that of the large-scale H i emission. Evidence for an anomalous spur structure pointing radially away from the galactic centre is presented, and may indicate a causal link between it and similar features seen in optical lines and radio continuum. Our data suggest the presence of a central molecular ring or disc with radius 300 ± 50 pc and a rotation velocity of about 200 km s−1 (assuming i = 73°). The dynamical mass of the nucleus is estimated to be no greater than 3.9 × 109 M⊙ . Assuming that the distribution of gas varies smoothly in the outer regions, we calculate the mass of molecular gas in the galaxy to be at least M mol = 1.1 × 109 M⊙ , and the star-forming efficiency to be 11 ± 2 L⊙ M⊙ −1 . These results imply that Circinus is undergoing a massive central starburst which may be, at least partially, responsible for its extended minor axis emission seen in several wavebands. 相似文献

The TAURUS-2 Fabry–Perot interferometer, mounted on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, has been used to observe the Circinus galaxy. We have mapped the intensity and velocity distribution of the ionized hydrogen in the galaxy using the Balmer series Hα spectral line.
The semiresolved core (observed with a seeing disc of 30 pc) appears amorphous in shape, which is commonly observed in Seyfert 2 galaxies. Its peak coincides with the core position measured in the radio continuum, suggesting that ionized gas surrounds a non-thermal source.
A circumnuclear ring or spiral of radius 220 pc and a rotational velocity of 350 km s−1 (assuming circular motions) surrounds the core. The inclination angle of this feature, i =40°±10°, is less than that of the previously observed radio continuum disc. The velocity channel maps obtained for the Hα ring show that the kinematics resemble those of a rotating ring and the intensity displays a complex structure indicative of several, unresolved, H II regions. We believe the ring to represent a circumnuclear starburst.
Our Hα data also show the presence of the previously detected [O III ] ionization cone to the north-west of the core, measuring more than 400 pc in length. We suggest that the ionization cone lies in a different plane from that of the starburst ring and is directed away from us. Several kinematic components of the core are derived and we calculate an outflow velocity in excess of 150–200 km s−1 for gas above the core of Circinus. We also present evidence for inflowing ionized gas at the centre of Circinus.
The correlation of the Hα and radio continuum features is discussed, as well as the possible presence of a starburst-driven superwind in the Circinus galaxy. 相似文献

We present a comparison between the peculiar velocity fields measured from a recently completed l -band Tully–Fisher survey of field spirals (SFI) and that derived from the IRAS 1.2-Jy redshift survey galaxy distribution. The analysis is based on the expansion of these data in redshift space using smooth orthonormal functions, and is performed using low- and high-resolution expansions, with an effective smoothing scale which increases almost linearly with redshift. The effective smoothing scales at 3000 km s−1 are 1500 and 1000 km s−1 for the low- and high-resolution filters. The agreement between the high- and low-resolution SFI velocity maps is excellent. The general features in the filtered SFI and IRAS velocity fields agree remarkably well within 6000 km s−1 . This good agreement between the fields allows us to determine the parameter β = Ω0.6 / b , where Ω is the cosmological density parameter, and b is the linear biasing factor. From a likelihood analysis on the SFI and IRAS modes we find that β = 0.6 ± 0.1, independently of the resolution of the modal expansion. For this value of β, the residual fields for the two filters show no systematic variations within 6000 km s−1 . Most remarkable is the lack of any coherent, redshift-dependent dipole flow in the residual field. 相似文献

Hazard maps are considered essential tools in the communication of volcanic risk between scientists, the local authorities
and the public. This study investigates the efficacy of such maps for the volcanic island of Montserrat in the West Indies
using both quantitative and qualitative research techniques. Normal plan view maps, which have been used on the island over
the last 10 years of the crisis, are evaluated against specially produced three-dimensional (3D) maps and perspective photographs.
Thirty-two demographically representative respondents of mixed backgrounds, sex, education and location were interviewed and
asked to complete a range of tasks and identification on the maps and photographs. The overall results show that ordinary
people have problems interpreting their environment as a mapped representation. We found respondents’ ability to locate and
orientate themselves as well as convey information relating to volcanic hazards was improved when using aerial photographs
rather than traditional plan view contour maps. There was a slight improvement in the use of the 3D maps, especially in terms
of topographic recognition. However, the most striking increase in effectiveness was found with the perspective photographs,
which enabled people to identify features and their orientation much more readily. For Montserrat it appears that well labelled
aerial and perspective photographs are the most effective geo-spatial method of communicating volcanic risks.
