We describe the methodology and software developed for the numerical analysis of the characteristics of the horizontal and vertical structure of geostrophic currents. We present the results of computation of these characteristics according to the data of the summer survey of the Black Sea carried out as a part of the ComSBlack-92 program. The distinctive features of the space structure of geostrophic currents discovered as a result and the established parameters of their variability may supplement the existing data on the current field in the Black Sea. 相似文献

This paper discusses the possibility of measurement of the current velocity vector characteristics averaged over the time of continuous regular down-up probings from a moving carrier. The measurements can be carried out either from a moving vessel or from a helicopter, floating on or hovering above the sea surface. As an illustration for the suggested technique,in situ observations compiled by a free-component (±XYZ) VEGA-3 probe in the Guiana current region in March 1990 are provided. The basic relations of the classical dyamic method have been complemented with the condition allowing for the non-monotonicity
of the vertical kinematic structure. The elements of the multi-layered system of geostrophic currents have been found to correlate
over depth with seawater density and hydrostatic pressure distribution. An example of the analysis of the vertical structure
of currents, involving specific hydrological data, is given.

A classification based on the number and types of large-scale acoustic waveguides is proposed for the mean seasonal profiles of sound speed propagation. A scheme for North Atlantic zoning, using typical curves of the sound speed vertical distribution, is given. A new line in the studies of water bodies is proposed: the assessment and correction of the process of biotic purification of water (biological treatment and self-purification). The proposed approach is based on a principally new hydrobiological method of monitoring and control of water quality formation process—bioestimation. The principal novelty of bioestimation is due to the fact that it controls not the quality of the aquatic medium, but the object that has not been controlled before—water purification process and organic matter transformations in the process of vital activity of saprotrophic bacteria. Three critical groups of factors were found to govern the activity of these bacteria: the dynamic characteristics of the aquatic environment; the load on destructors in terms of organic matter; and the impact of substances, which are atypical of natural water and most often are discharged in it with industrial wastes. A group of indicator microorganisms—bioestimators—is chosen for each group of factors. The population size of such estimators can be used to identify and next eliminate the disturbing factor. The bioestimators are not species but ecological groups of microorganisms, commonly inhabiting any waters, either salt or fresh. Bioestimation also helps to identify disturbances in water purification process even in the cases where analyses of aquatic environment quality do not signal alarm. The proposed method is described and its major distinctions from the well-known hydrobiological method (bioindication in its original, saprobiological meaning) are demonstrated. 相似文献

On the basis of the many-year-average seasonal data array of temperature and salinity presented on a scale of one-degree averaging,
by using a special quantitative criterion, we reveal a climatic frontal zone and determine both its physical and hydrological
characteristics (such as the length width, and thickness of the frontal layer and the temperature, salinity, and density gradients)
and its geographic coordinates. The many-year average seasonal variability of these characteristics is analyzed.

Climatic frontal zones are selected in the thermohaline fields of the Tropical Atlantic by analyzing the many-year-average
seasonal database reduced to the nodes of a one-degree grid. We determine physical characteristics of the frontal zones, study
their spatial and temporal variability, and reveal basic regularities of the appearance of frontal zones in the fields of
thermohaline characteristics.

On the basis of the data of the complex oceanographic experiment carried out in the course of the second Ukrainian Antarctic
expedition in March 1998, we study the structure and kinematics of waters in the region of the archipelago of Argentine Islands.
The regularities of thermohaline stratification of waters are discovered. We determine the most important environmental parameters
premoting the variability of hydrophysical fields on time scales varying from several days up to a week, analyse the data
of actual observations over the currents, and estimate the relative contribtions of diurnal and semidiurnal tidal waves to
the total dispersion of hydrophysical parameters of the environment. The residual currents are filtered out. We propose a
hypothesis about the mechanism of their formation. Various types of tidal currents are revealed and the directions of propagation
of diurnal and semidiurnal tidal waves are determined.

We study the seasonal and interannual variations of the field of sea-surface temperature (SST) in the Southwest Atlantic on
the basis of the analysis of three data arrays, namely, the Levitus-Boyer-1994 hydrological array, the WOD-98 actual database,
and the data of satellite measurements of SST. We perform the comparative analysis of the amplitude-phase characteristics
of the annual course of the SST field and discuss the distinctive features of its seasonal and interannual variations. It
is shown that the results obtained by using different data arrays are in good agreement. The values of the coefficient of
linear correlation are equal to 0.7–0.9. It is discovered that the maximum seasonal variations of SST are observed in the
zone of confluence of the Falkland and Brasil Currents in the vicinities of the South Subtropical and Antarctic Polar fronts.
The minimum seasonal variations are recorded in the Antarctic region and in the Weddell Sea. The satellite data demonstrate
that the level of interannual variability is high in the zones of climatic fronts.
