The characteristics of a Lyman-alpha humidiometer have been carefully examined in an air-conditioned test chamber. The results confirm that when carefully used, this humidiometer is suitable for measurements of turbulent humidity fluctuations. Measurements with a Lyman-alpha humidiometer were carried out in the surface boundary layer over the ocean. The relation between turbulent intensity ( a = a ov2) and the friction humidity (a *) can be expressed as a = l.6a *. The spectrum of turbulent humidity for wind speeds larger than 3 m s –1 conforms to the similarity law in the surface boundary layer. The spectrum has two characteristic normalized frequencies, namely, a higher peak and a secondary peak (or a shoulder).  相似文献

Recently the equilibrium property of ergodicity was identified in an earthquake fault system (Tiampo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 238501, 2003; Phys. Rev. E 75, 066107, 2007). Ergodicity in this context not only requires that the system is stationary for these networks at the applicable spatial and temporal scales, but also implies that they are in a state of metastable equilibrium, one in which the ensemble averages can be substituted for temporal averages when studying their behavior in space and time. In this work we show that this property can be used to identify those regions of parameter space which are stationary when applied to the seismicity of two naturally-occurring earthquake fault networks. We apply this measure to one particular seismicity-based forecasting tool, the Pattern Informatics index (Tiampo et al., Europhys. Lett. 60, 481–487, 2002; Rundle et al., Proc. National Acad. Sci., U.S.A., Suppl. 1, 99, 2463, 2002), in order to test the hypothesis that the identification of ergodic regions can be used to improve and optimize forecasts that rely on historic seismicity catalogs. We also apply the same measure to synthetic catalogs in order to better understand the physical process that affects this accuracy. We show that, in particular, ergodic regions defined by magnitude and time period provide more reliable forecasts of future events in both natural and synthetic catalogs, and that these improvements can be directly related to specific features or properties of the catalogs that impact the behavior of their spatial and temporal statistics.  相似文献

A monitoring GPS array recently developed in Japan can yield nationwide maps of active inland tectonic zones (ATZs) on a mesoscale, approximately 70 to several hundred kilometers in lateral extent. But it has been difficult to characterize ATZs in Japan, as they are in fact operational on multiple scales and our efforts are often hindered by various irregularities in the data. The key to overcoming these problems would be to gain an insight into the available data before any precise kinematic modeling is performed with indefinite assumptions. In this study, horizontal velocity fields, deduced from the nationwide GPS array, were treated with a set of techniques in robust smoothing and exploratory data analysis that brought out exceptionally powerful mesoscale ATZs, and made them easier to characterize. The resolved ATZs were then retrospectively monitored to study their regional and temporal variations, using a set of approx. 840 observation stations, about 30 km apart, for a 4-year series of fixed observation time-intervals, 810 days each. The smoothing operation involved three steps: (1) imputation of the velocity fields for the purpose of anti-aliasing, (2) robust smoothing of the velocity fields with the median operative, and (3) visualization of deformation-rate distributions in several coordinate independent parameters, and post-filtering. The geometrical resolvability of mesoscale ATZs was confirmed by calibrating the smoothing scheme against synthetic tectonic boundary models before it was applied to the case study in Japan. ATZs in Japan, which are essentially visible as systematic deviations in the velocity fields on the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) and as strain rate anomalies, were highlighted sharply along some known tectonic zones, chains of active volcanoes, and areas above low seismic velocity anomalies in the crust and upper mantle, all of which generally paralleled the offshore trench axes. The geometrical agreements among the mapped ATZs and the physical anomalies in the crust are presumably due to their common structural weakness on the mesoscale. In the four main islands of Japan, all but 30–40% of the strain rate anomalies persisted during the entire 6 years of the case study period, while the rest sporadically appeared or disappeared in a period from several months to a few years. The transient shifts in the deformation rates were remarkably synchronous with some nearby major tectonic episodes: large earthquakes and slow events. Differential plate coupling strengths along the subduction zones can also be inferred from the persistent pattern of rotational strain rate anomalies forming clockwise and counterclockwise pairs along the Pacific. Our empirical observations suggest that the first-order features of interseismic crustal deformations in Japan can be characterized as collateral processes behaving in response to fluctuations of the tectonic stresses on multiple scales, likely influenced by changes of plate coupling strengths on the contiguous subduction faults.  相似文献

In order to determine the values of the Dalton and the Stanton numbers, an observational study was made over a saturated barley field in the Hachirogata. flat reclaimed land located in the northern part of Japan. The mean height of the barley was about 11 cm; the roughness height for momentum was determined from the mean wind profiles as 4.24 ± 0.18 cm and the zero-plane displacement height as 0 cm. Under neutral stratification and a saturated surface, the reciprocals of the Dalton and Stanton numbers, Da-1 and St-1, were estimated. The results show that the mean value of St-1 is 12.1, and the ratio of the bulk transfer coefficient for heat to that for momentum. C H/CM, is 0.53, which are not entirely incompatible with the few results available from past observations. The mean value of Da- is 38.2. This value is larger than St-1, and fits reasonably well with the semi-empirical equation proposed by Brutsaert (1975a,b).  相似文献

The values of roughness length for momentum z 0and zero-plane displacement d 0over a hilly rough complex region with vegetation were evaluated without any assumption concerning z 0and d 0.It was found that for widely scattered profile data, the method of least squares will not give a reasonable result in determining the roughness parameters. For this purpose, the method of maximum correlation was introduced instead. This method gave a fair result for captive balloon observations conducted in hilly terrain mainly covered with forest in the northwestern part of the Kanto Plain, Japan.  相似文献

The Aoso volcano is a member of the newly defined volcanic front of Northeast Japan, characterized by the occurrence of low-K and hornblende andesites. Its activity can be divided into three stages: the early, caldera-forming, and late stages. While petrographic and geochemical data show all products underwent magma mixing or co-mingling, Sr and Nd isotopic ratios indicate that all are consanguineous. The end-member magmas are basaltic and andesitic in the early stage, but basaltic and dacitic in the late stage. In the caldera-forming stage, hornblende-free and hornblende-rich andesites co-mingled, which triggered an explosive eruption leading to caldera formation. Hornblende occurs also in the dacite from the early part of the late stage. These hornblende andesites and dacites are lower in magmatic temperature compared to hornblende-free andesites. The estimated basaltic end-member is low-K and high in magmatic temperature, and can be derived by a high degree of partial melting of mantle under the volcanic front. The estimated andesitic and dacitic end-members cannot be derived from the basaltic end-member magma through fractional crystallization, but can be derived from partial re-melting of the solidified low-K basalt, leaving amphibolitic and gabbroic residues, respectively.  相似文献
