Scale mismatches and their ecological and economic effects on landscapes: A spatially explicit model
Mismatches between the spatial scales of human decision-making and natural processes contribute to environmental problems such as global warming and biodiversity losses. People damage the environment through local activities like clearing land or burning fossil fuels, but the damages only become manifest at larger regional or global scales where no one pays for them. Payments for ecological services like carbon sequestration can correct for these damages caused by scale mismatches. This paper presents a spatially explicit land-use model to investigate the consequences of scale mismatches for pollination and carbon storage services and examine the effect of payment for only carbon storage services. The model integrates processes in multiple spatial scales ranging from the parcel level used by landowners’ decision about deforestation, to the larger scale used by animals to pollinate plants, and finally to the global scale where carbon storage services are supplied. We show that payment for carbon storage services can become an effective mechanism to protect forests at the same time that it creates inequities among landowners in income level.These findings suggest that market-based approaches that focus on conservation of a single ecosystem service may reproduce unequal power relations among landowners. 相似文献

应用常规高空资料、FY-2C卫星红外和水汽图像、加密自动站地面观测资料,结合新一代多普勒雷达探测资料,综合分析了2008年2月28日夜间至29日凌晨发生在云南的"雷打雪"罕见天气现象.结果表明:南支槽和冷空气、西南低空急流的共同影响,是其发生的有利天气背景,其中强对流天气就发生在急流与锋面相互作用的湿度锋湿区内斜压不稳定的环境中.中-γ尺度对流云团生成并逐渐增强为中-β尺度对流云团是形成此次复杂对流天气的直接中尺度系统.多普勒雷达回波中,PPI上有回波强度达25~33dBz的"人字形"回波、钩状回波以及阵风锋的出现,相应VPPI上出现逆风区、低层零线"S"形暖平流及"牛眼"结构是"雷打雪"天气中降雨转为冰雹、阵雪过程中,中尺度对流系统由弱变强的典型特征.地面逐时温、压、湿、风的迅速演变特征表现为雷暴发生前增温增湿和增压,温度、气压出现峰值,且气压曲线显示为圆顶状的中尺度雷暴高压特征;风的变化则表现为风向呈逆时针旋转,偏北风增大并出现风速峰值.雷暴过境时,要素显示为降温增湿,出现露点锋. 相似文献

应用雷电定位系统和高空观测资料并结合雷达回波资料, 对广州地区雷暴过程云-地闪特征进行分析, 并就有、无云-地闪出现的两组不同对流天气过程的环境条件进行了比较研究。结果表明:广州地区的雷暴过程以负的云-地闪为主, 负云-地闪所占比例在90%以上。云-地闪发生频率与雷暴系统强度演变有直接联系, 对于同一系统来说, 随着系统回波强度的增强, 云-地闪发生的频率也增高。但不同系统中, 云-地闪发生频率有很大不同, 回波强(弱)的对流系统并不意味着云-地闪发生的频率就高(低)。有云-地闪记录的对流天气过程具有更大的垂直切变、更高的相对风暴螺旋度以及更多的对流抑制能量, 云-地闪现象更易于出现在更加有组织和更强的对流系统中。研究还发现广州及周边城市区域对雷暴系统回波强度及云-地闪现象可能有影响, 两个典型个例分析表明, 雷暴系统移经城市区域时回波强度减弱, 云-地闪发生频率减小, 雷暴移过城市区域后, 强度可重新加强, 云-地闪发生频率增大。 相似文献

使用贵州省1961—2004年84个气象台站44年历史冰雹记录及1:1000000全国数字高程模型(DEM)资料, 采用基于GIS的数字地形分析、分区统计和图像分类方法, 研究了冰雹分布与地形高程、坡向、坡度及地形切割深度的关系。研究表明:地形高程是影响贵州省降雹分布的最主要地形影响因子; 微观地形因子如坡向和坡度对降雹日数的变异并没有显著性影响, 但大范围的地势抬升及暖湿空气的迎风坡有利于降雹; 地形切割深度并不是年平均降雹日数差异的显著影响因子; 纬度位置的不同, 使其受暖湿空气影响程度不同, 热力条件也存在差异, 也是影响平均降雹日数差异的因子之一; 根据3个影响因子建模获得的方程及贵州省冰雹风险分区图, 经统计检验和与历史乡镇降雹资料比较, 具有较好的一致性。 相似文献

Many gentle dip translational rock slides have taken place in the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. In order to study the mechanism of these translational rock slides, the authors use the Anlesi landslide as a typical case study to investigate in detail. Field investigations show that the slip zones of the Anlesi landslide were formed from a white mudstone in Jurassic red strata. X-ray diffraction and infrared ray analysis showed that the main mineral components of the slip zones are montmorillonite, illite, feldspar and quartz. Laboratory tests indicate that the slip zone soils are silty clay, of medium-swelling potential, the shear strength decreasing significantly as the slip zone attracts water and saturates.The main factors contributing to the Anlesi landslide are recent tectonic activity, incompetent beds, and intensive rainfall. Recent tectonic activity had caused shear failure along the incompetent beds, and joints within the sandstone. With the effect of intensive rainfall, water percolates to the incompetent beds along tectonic fissures, resulting in swelling of the soil material and high groundwater pressures within fissures in the strata. As a consequence, the Anlesi slope is prone to slide along these incompetent beds.Flac3D software was used to simulate the mechanism of the Anlesi landslide considering the rheological properties of soil and rock. The simulation results demonstrate that the stress, displacement and failure area changes with simulated creep time. The maximum displacement in the X direction reaches 7.59 m after 200-year simulated creep. Therefore, the mechanism of the Anlesi landslide can be illustrated considering the rheological properties of Jurassic red strata. 相似文献

徐家沟铜矿床位于勉(县)-略(阳)-阳(平关)铜多金属矿化集中区中部的铜厂矿田西北部,矿体产于中上元古界郭家沟组中的片理化细碧岩带內,已圈定铜矿体13条,多为盲矿体.矿石主要自然类型为黄铁矿化-磁黄铁矿化-片理化细碧岩型,属于火山沉积-构造、岩浆改造型铜矿床.郭家沟组中的细碧岩为铜的主要矿源岩,细碧岩中的近东西向构造片理化带为矿质富集提供了富集通道和空间.铜厂闪长岩体为成矿提供了动力、热源和主要硫源,成矿受上述地层岩性、构造、岩浆岩因素联合控制. 相似文献

Following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo on 15 June 1991, volcanic ash was transported westward to the South China Sea in an atmospheric plume, falling out and settling to the sea floor within days and forming an up to 10 cm thick layer on an area >400 000 km2. Immediately after deposition, surviving deep‐burrowing animals re‐opened their connection to the sea floor to obtain water for respiration and/or food take‐up. Later, small‐sized meiofauna and then macrofauna re‐colonized the sea floor, mixing newly deposited organic fluff with the underlying ash. Consequently, ash deposits thinner than 1 mm have not often been observed as a continuous layer when cored six years after the eruption, while ash about 2 mm thick is now patchily bioturbated. In areas covered by ash thicker than 5 mm, mixing by benthic animals is controlled mainly by the adaptation of the burrowing fauna to variations in grain‐size, the rate of background sedimentation, the availability of benthic food on and within the sediment and pore water oxygen levels. With respect to these factors, four provinces can be distinguished: (i) Along the Philippines margin run‐off from land fuels primary production that, in turn, leads to a high benthic food content. The benthic fauna is adapted to a variable grain‐size and rapid sedimentation. Therefore, mixing is intense and the preservation potential of the ash layer is low. (ii) In areas affected by deposition of hyperpycnites and turbidites, i.e. in canyons in front of river mouths and in the Manila Trench, the ash layer is preserved due to rapid burial. (iii) The area to the west to about 116° E receives low amounts of benthic food, benthic mixing is less intense and the preservation potential of the ash is high. (iv) The central South China Sea, where the ash is thinner than 3 cm, is affected by intense wind mixing and upwelling and the benthic food content is high; thus, the chance that the ash will be preserved as a sharp‐based layer is low. Consequently, the style of ash preservation has palaeo‐environmental significance. Older buried and burrowed event layers provide further information to elucidate the fate of the 1991 Pinatubo ash layer; in general their appearance fits with observations in the Recent. 相似文献
