Experiments were conducted in which we tested the effects of hexavalent chromium on both natural assemblages of phytoplankton and cultures of Thalassiosira pseudonana clone 3H. Water was collected from various locations in Yaquina Bay, Oregon, with salinities ranging from 32·5‰ to 0·03‰. A variety of nutrient regimes were tested by adding major nutrients and micro-nutrients, and/or stripping micro-nutrients with activated carbon. In one high salinity experiment, chromium was stimulatory, as were micro-nutrient additions. In other high and medium salinity experiments, chromium was neither stimulatory nor inhibitory, at levels up to 1·9 μ mole l?1 Cr. There was, however, slight inhibition of growth at 19·0 μ mole l?1 Cr, due specifically to inhibition of Skeletonema costatum. In our freshwater experiments, chromium was very inhibitory at 1·9 μ mole l?1 Cr, and slightly inhibitory at 0·19 μ mole l?1 Cr. Species inhibited by chromium were Surirella ovata, Detonula confervacea, and Cyclotella sp. Experiments were conducted with T. pseudonana grown over a wide range of salinities. Chromium was found to be very inhibitory in freshwater and became progressively less toxic as the salinity increased. Most inhibition was neutralized by a salinity of 2·1‰. 相似文献

Impact of spatial variations of land surface parameters on regional evaporation: a case study with remote sensing data 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Most precipitation in watersheds is consumed by evaporation, thus techniques to appraise regional evaporation are important to assess the availability of water resources. Many algorithms to estimate evaporation from remotely sensed spectral data have been developed in the recent past. In addition to differences in the physical parameterization of surface fluxes, these algorithms have different solutions for describing spatial variations of the parameters in the soil–vegetation–atmosphere–transfer (SVAT) continuum. In this study, the necessity to spatially distinguish SVAT parameters for computing surface heat fluxes is analysed for the Naivasha watershed in the Kenyan Rift Valley. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) spectral data have been used to first delineate the watershed into 15 hydrological units using surface temperature, normalized difference vegetation index and surface albedo as attributes. Thereafter, semi‐empirical relationships between these TM‐based parameters and other SVAT parameters have been applied to compute the spatial variation of SVAT parameters and the associated evaporation from the different hydrological units. The impact of using watershed‐constant or watershed‐distributed SVAT parameters on the fluxes is analysed. The determination of watershed averaged evaporation with area‐aggregated SVAT parameters is feasible without significant loss of accuracy. Distributed evaporation in heterogeneous watersheds, however, can be investigated only with remote sensing flux algorithms that can account for spatially variable air temperature, surface roughness, surface albedo and the stability correction of the temperature profile due to buoyancy. Erroneous results can be expected if area‐aggregated SVAT parameters are used to calculate local evaporation. As most of the recently developed remote sensing flux algorithms are based on areal constant SVAT parameters, direct applications in watersheds are still limited. We present palaeomagnetic data obtained from large clasts collected in non-welded pyroclastic deposits from Montagne Pelée volcano (Martinique Island, West Indies). These deposits, dated by the 14C method from 5000 yr BP to the present, comprise block- and ash-flows, ash- and pumice-flows and pumice fallouts. Alternating fields treatment was as a routine chosen to demagnetise large samples for which the magnetisation was measured with a specially designed inductometer. The mean directions obtained from block- and ash-flow deposits of the 1902 and 1929 eruptions are in good agreement with the expected geomagnetic directions at these times in Martinique. The so-called P1 eruption (∼1345 AD), which is characterised by a rarely observed transition from a Peléean to a Plinian eruptive style, allows a direct comparison of the palaeomagnetic directions obtained from the three types of pyroclastic deposits. All deposits provide identical mean directions, which further demonstrates the suitability of the non-welded pyroclastic deposits for geomagnetic secular variation study with a very good accuracy and precision. The possibility of using pyroclastic deposits is promising for obtaining a wider distribution of sampling sites, which may better allow us to constrain our knowledge on the geomagnetic secular variation. We find that large geomagnetic changes occurred in Martinique during the last millennium, while the variations appear more limited prior to this period. 相似文献

Variation of temperature and salinity in the lower 22 km stretch of the Gautami-Godavari estuary are reported during four
different seasons; hot-weather, south-west monsoon, post-monsoon and winter seasons. The seasonal variation in temperature
is small, with a high of about 30°C during hot-weather season and a low of about 26°C during winter season. Unlike temperatures,
the salinities in the estuary show large seasonal fluctuations. During south-west monsoon surface salinities were low (0 to
8‰) due to high fresh water run off into the estuary. During hot-weather season surface salinities of 25 to 30‰ were observed

The measurement of the telluric field's long-time variations requires stable instruments in the period range above 1 day. Obviously, most problems arise from drifting voltages between the telluric probes. Good results have been achieved using a three chamber Hempfling KCl probe together with Filloux's AgAgCl electrode. However, a one chamber probe of 0.6 m length and 0.06 m diameter filled with saturated KCl solution may be sufficient for some applications and additionally allows permanent control of the electrolyte's salt concentration. In a field test the telluric field at a single site was simultaneously observed using one and three chamber probes separated by 25 and 55 m resp. For periods shorter than 1 hour the noise level of the electrodes was found to be less than 1 (mV)2/Hz whereas in the period range between 1 hour and 1 day it increases to 100 (mV)2/Hz. Consequently, surveys investigating long periods of the telluric field can be carried out using small electrode separations of a few tens of meters. Furthermore, the stability of this probe negates the need to interrupt the time series for servicing of the probe. However, the one chamber probe is somewhat inferior to the three chamber probe with regard to temperature dependence at long periods. 相似文献

Stepped bedrock topography at the snout of a small outlet glacier from Øksfjordjøkelen, North Norway, produces an extensive subglacial cavity system which stretches some 70m across and 100m up-glacier, giving access beneath ice ≤50 m thick. Inside the cavity, regelation ice, clean glacier ice and deforming basal ice have been observed. Samples were taken and basal debris concentrations at the glacier sole were found to vary between 0.005 and 15.38 per cent by volume. The basal ice velocity has been determined using a linear variable differential transformer attached to an analogue recorder, and also by means of measured displacements of ice crews and clasts embedded in the basal ice. Velocities were found to differ both spatially and temporally from a maximum of 2.55 mm h1 to a minimum of 0.3 mm h?1. The measurements and observations, which have been related to present theory, show how spatially averaged values for a number of variables could lead to inaccuracies in predicted erosion values, certainly at a local scale. On the exposed foreland, jointcontrolled lee-side faces provide evidence for extensive subglacial plucking (here taken to mean the removal of preloosened bed material and/or material resulting from bed failure). Indeed, in the cavity the early stages of removal of joint-controlled blocks by ice deformation along joints have been observed. The importance of debris-rich basal ice is shown in the formation of large striations (up to 500cm × 16cm × 2cm) present on the foreland. 相似文献
