Abstract: ‘Place matters’ in the production of knowledge. This article examines the production of feminist geographical knowledge at a particular place – the Department of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning at the University of Waikato. Feminist geography at Waikato represents a nexus of international, national, regional, and local politics. It represents the efforts, personalities, political and personal motivations of particular individuals, at particular times, in a particular space. Societies cope with their geographical environment with the help of objects and categories of objects. Objects are cognitive
symbols enabling societies to come to terms with the incertainties and complexity of the real. This text begins by presenting
processes of objectivation and of categorisation of geographical reality. Then, it analyses how far categorisation of objects
influences the practice and the transformation of corresponding reality. Coping with categorisation and transformation, it
thus circumscribes the interactions between language, cognition and action by which geographical entities are transformed.
It illustrates this thesis with the historical transformation of modes of apprehension of the mountains in the West and the
parallel transformation of their usage and the modes of planning applied to them.

This paper reports a geomorphologic landscape investigation, vegetation survey and soil sampling at 14 sites across the Gurbantunggut Desert between 87o37'09'-88o24'04'E and 44o14'04'-45o41'52'N. The study encountered 8 species of low trees and shrubs, 5 of perennial herbs, 8 of annual plants and 48 of ephemeral and ephemeroid plants. These species of plants represent one-third of the species found in the Gurbantunggut Desert, and their communities make up a large proportion of desert vegetation with great landscape significance. In the investigation we found that the plant communities are accordingly succeeded with the spatial variation of macro-ecoenvironment. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Correlation Analysis (CA) we found that the micro-ecoenvironment heterogeneity of aeolian sandy soil's physical and chemical properties such as soil nutrient, soil moisture, soil salt, pH etc. only impacted the diversity of herb synusia (PIEherb) of the desert, with a negative correlation. Meanwhile, the impact of microhabitat on the plant community pattern with an antagonistic interaction made vegetation's eco-distribution in a temporary equilibrium. 相似文献

Wind movement and velocity can have a profound effect on some aspects of the soil erosion process. In the case of wind‐driven rain, differences in raindrop trajectory are expected: wind‐driven raindrops achieve some degree of horizontal velocity, which increases their resultant impact velocity and they strike the soil surface at an angle deviated from the vertical under the effects of both gravitational and drag forces. However, not much is known about the physical impact of raindrops on a soil in situations where this impact is at an angle, and it is also not precise known if oblique raindrops have stronger erosive effects than vertical ones. A series of tests was conducted to assess the effect of wind velocities on sand detachment from splash cups in a wind tunnel facility equipped with a rainfall simulator. Splash cups packed with standard sand were exposed to windless rains and to rains driven by horizontal wind velocities of 6, 10 and 14 m s?1 to evaluate the sand detachment by wind‐driven raindrops. The average angle of rain inclination from vertical was calculated from the direct intensity measurements implemented with windward and leeward‐facing raingauges placed at different slopes. A kinetic energy sensor measured energy of windless and wind‐driven rains. Results showed that the kinetic energy flux calculated by the resultant impact velocity of drops adequately described the sand detachment from the splash cups by wind‐driven raindrops. However, an additional analysis of Pearson correlation coefficients using the velocity components rather than the resultant velocity of wind‐driven raindrops indicated that the energy flux related to the horizontal component of wind‐driven raindrops had a greater correlation with sand detachment than that related to the normal component. This finding contradicted the general assumption that the component of velocity normal to the surface is related to the detachment. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Back scattered electron and transmission electron imaging of lunar soil grains reveal an abundance of submicrometer-sized
pure Fe0 globules that occur in the rinds of many soil grains and in the submillimeter sized vesicular glass-cemented grains called
agglutinates. Grain rinds are amorphous silicates that were deposited on grains exposed at the lunar surface from transient
vapors produced by hypervelocity micrometeorite impacts. Fe0 may have dissociated from Fe-compounds in a high temperature (>3000°C) vapor phase and then condensed as globules on grain
surfaces. The agglutinitic glass is a quenched product of silicate melts, also produced by micrometeorite impacts on lunar
soils. Reduction by solar wind hydrogen in agglutinitic melts may have produced immiscible droplets that solidified as globules.
The exact mechanism of formation of such Fe0 globules in lunar soils remains unresolved. 相似文献
