This paper explores the relationship between the forestry enterprises (leskhozi) and the inhabitants of forestry villages
in the northern rayony of Perm oblast, Russian Federation in the context of the `new regional geography'. These relationships
are compared with those identified between peasant farmers and collective and state farms post-1991, and a theory of the cultivation
of these relationships as a coping mechanism for both households and enterprises facing difficult economic circumstances is
advanced. The situation in the northern rayony is contextualised through discussion of the settlement and development history
of the region, which was a recipient of forced and voluntary labour migration during the Soviet period. The paper concludes
that in accordance with recent theories of post-communist regional development, the experience of transition in the northern
rayony of Perm oblast is determined at least in part by its social and economic context.

Plans to double the proportion of land under forest cover in Ireland by the year 2035 have been initiated. The plan, primarily
financially driven, ignores potential environmental impacts of forestry, particularly impacts on groundwater resources and
quality. Since groundwater supplies almost 25% of Ireland's total potable water, these impacts are important. Field investigations
indicate that afforestation leads to a reduction in runoff by as much as 20%, mainly due to interception of rainfall by forest
canopies. Clearfelling has the opposite impact. Implications are that uncoordinated forestry practices can potentially exacerbate
flooding. Groundwater recharge is affected by forestry, largely due to greater uptake of soil water by trees and to increased
water-holding capacity of forest soils, arising from higher organic contents. Recharge rates under forests can be reduced
to one tenth that under grass or heathland. Groundwater quality may be affected by enhanced acidification and nitrification
under forests, due partly to scavenging of atmospheric pollutants by forest canopies, and partly to greater deposition of
highly acid leaf litter. The slower recharge rates of groundwater under forests lead to significant delays in manifestation
of deterioration in groundwater quality.

Seasonal metrics and environmental responses to forestry soil surface CO2 emission effluxes among three types of lower subtropical forests were consistently monitored over two years with static chamber-gas chromatograph techniques among three types of lower subtropical forests. Results showed that annual CO2 effluxes (S L) reached 3942.20, 3422.36 and 2163.02 CO2 g·m-2·a-1, respectively in the monsoon evergreen broadleaf forest, mixed broadleaf-coniferous forest and coniferous forest. All the three types of forests revealed the same characteristics of seasonal changes with the CO2 effluxes peaking throughout June to August. During this peaking period, the effluxes were 35.9%, 38.1% and 40.2% of the total annual effluxes, respectively. The CO2 emission process responding to the environmental factors displayed significantly different patterns in forestry soils of the three types of forests. The coniferous forest (CF) was more sensitive to temperature than the other two types. The Q10 values were higher, along with greater seasonal variations of the CO2 efflux, indicating that the structurally unique forestry ecosystem has disadvantage against interferences. All the three types of forestry CO2 effluxes showed significant correlation with the soil temperature (Ts), soil water content (Ms) and air pressure (Pa). However, stepwise regression analysis indicated no significant correlation between air pressure and the soil CO2 efflux. With an empirical model to measure soil temperature and water content in 5 cm beneath the soil surface, the CO2 effluxes accounting for 75.7%, 77.8% and 86.5% of the efflux variability respectively in soils of BF, MF and PF were calculated. Constancy in predator/prey ratio (PPR) is a controversial issue in ecological research. Published reports support both constancy and inconstancy of the ratio in animal communities. Only a few studies, however, specifically address its course through time. Here we study the course of predator/prey ratio in communities of large Plio-Pleistocene mammals in Italy. After controlling for taphonomic biases, we find strong support for PPR inconstancy through time. Extinction, dispersal events, and differences in body size trends between predators and their prey were found to affect the ratio, which was distributed almost bimodally. We suggest that this stepwise dynamic in PPR indicates changes in ecosystem functioning. Prey richness was controlled by predation when PPR was high and by resources when PPR was low. 相似文献

Research into skilled migrant communities tends to emphasize the grounding of identities through transnationalism and mobility. Less research has been conducted into how skilled migrants actually ground their identities within the city through everyday social networks. The paper addresses this imbalance by examining the changing significance of British voluntary and community organisations (VCOs) in Paris, France. Combining qualitative and quantitative data, findings show local migrant networks to be important focal points for the British even though migrants’ lives may increasingly be transnational in orientation. The research also shows that in situ social networks are evolving. Specifically, traditional forms of elite expatriate communality are not as omnipotent as they once were, with the popularity of some high-profile British VCOs in Paris declining over recent decades. The paper argues that the link between social dynamism and communal morphology helps explain this shift: as British middle-class lifestyles have fragmented, and as the British migrant population in Paris has grown in scale and scope, so the range of VCOs and associated informal networks has grown. Whilst some skilled migrants still embed within traditional expatriate organisations, Britishness is increasingly grounded elsewhere; both within the city through alternative social networks, and located beyond the city through transnational ties. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the global energy production potential of woody biomass from forestry for the year
2050 using a bottom-up analysis of key factors. Woody biomass from forestry was defined as all of the aboveground woody biomass
of trees, including all products made from woody biomass. This includes the harvesting, processing and use of woody biomass.
The projection was performed by comparing the future demand with the future supply of wood, based on existing databases, scenarios,
and outlook studies. Specific attention was paid to the impact of the underlying factors that determine this potential and
to the gaps and uncertainties in our current knowledge. Key variables included the demand for industrial roundwood and woodfuel,
the plantation establishment rates, and the various theoretical, technical, economical, and ecological limitations related
to the supply of wood from forests. Forests, as defined in this study, exclude forest plantations. Key uncertainties were
the supply of wood from trees outside forests, the future rates of deforestation, the consumption of woodfuel, and the theoretical,
technical, economical, or ecological wood production potentials of the forests. Based on a medium demand and medium plantation
scenario, the global theoretical potential of the surplus wood supply (i.e., after the demand for woodfuel and industrial roundwood is met) in 2050 was calculated
to be 6.1 Gm3 (71 EJ) and the technical potential to be 5.5 Gm3 (64 EJ). In practice, economical considerations further reduced the surplus wood supply from forests to 1.3 Gm3 year−1 (15 EJ year−1). When ecological criteria were also included, the demand for woodfuel and industrial roundwood exceeded the supply by 0.7 Gm3 year−1 (8 EJ year−1). The bioenergy potential from logging and processing residues and waste was estimated to be equivalent to 2.4 Gm3 year−1 (28 EJ year−1) wood, based on a medium demand scenario. These results indicate that forests can, in theory, become a major source of bioenergy,
and that the use of this bioenergy can, in theory, be realized without endangering the supply of industrial roundwood and
woodfuel and without further deforestation. Regional shortages in the supply of industrial roundwood and woodfuel can, however,
occur in some regions, e.g., South Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. 相似文献

Vegetation community structure is a key indicator of long-term vegetation change in semi-arid ecosystems. This study uses ground-based spectral measurements and a canopy reflectance model to investigate the potential of Earth observation data to characterize variations in vegetation structure along a grazing gradient in the eastern Kalahari, Botswana. Despite differences in the bidirectional reflectances of soil, plant litter, bush and grass canopies towards the end of a dry season, it is unlikely that Earth observation data can be used to estimate vegetation structure at this time. This is due to an ambiguity in the relationship between spectral reflectance and vegetation structure caused primarily by the limited dimensionality of reflectance data. Variations in canopy architecture cause differences in the level of inter-canopy shadowing but the net effect—lower reflectance with an increase in bush cover—parallels the darkening effects of any vegetation cover on relatively bright sandy soils in semi-arid environments. These results highlight the continued need for long-term ground-based ecological monitoring in conjunction with satellite-based monitoring of changes in vegetation cover. 相似文献
